I actually have an EBMM and an OLP. The neck on the OLP isn't even close. The pickups aren't even close. The OLP is an awesome guitar for the price, but it can't be compared to an EBMM except in the looks department. Apples and Oranges otherwise. As for differences between EBMM and Wolfgang, the frets are a little bit different, EBMM frets are tall and medium width, the Wolfgang's are tall and narrow width. The neck radius on the EBMM is 10" compared to 15" on the Wolfgang. Now, if you're comparing Wolfgang standard, well they feel quite different because of the arch top. The neck is angled to compensate for the arch top and makes the playability quite different in my opinion. But what would I know, I only own both (or all 3 including the OLP). So really, you need to try both out and see which one plays the best for you.

The ones made in asia are called EXP. The main difference is the bridge....it's drop forged instead of spring steel. The headstock is not angled, the tuners not pearl, the neck not birdseye, the top not arched. The frets and PUPs are the same. My standard has one hell of a glossy finish that the imports will most likely not have.......in fact none of my other guitars have as nice of a finish, but my LP might be close.

The biggest difference is the price, where it's made, and maybe the factory set-up.

If you got a hard tail it might be pretty close for a lot less money.

There is a whole thread on the differences between the 3 Wolfs somewhere on this board.

Back to the original question about the EBMM and Wolfie comparison...

I own each. I have a '95 Natural EBMM (I think it might be one of the last production runs made, I dated it through Ernie Ball at October 15, 1995 which was well after Eddie announced he was going with Peavey...I digress). I also have a 1997 Gold top Wolfgang standard. I'm not an expert, so take all of this as personal opinion. As far as feel, the necks feel similar, but I think the EBMM has a different radius or something. It almost makes the neck width of the EBMM feel a little thinner than the Wolfgang. The asymetrical neck feels close to the same between the two. I think the look of the EBMM is so simple and classy, and I love the quilt tops that were prevalent as opposed to mostly solids and flame tops of the Wolfgang (with exception to first year quilts). But I've never thought the Wolfgang was an ugly guitar, but not nearly as nice as the EBMM. The construction seemed superior with the EBMM, but it's not something that you can tell necessarily in the feel, just in the look. It might be mental, but I always thought the EBMM looked 'custom made' while the Wolfgang looks like a mass produced guitar. As far as sound, and I guess I'm in the minority, but I really think the two guitars sound different. I think the EBMM's bridge sounds 'bitier' and the neck sounds smoother. But I think that also makes the middle position of the switch sound a little more drastic while the Wolfgang sounds a little more even because the bridge and neck sounds don't vary quite as much. Also the tone knob option is alright with the Wolfgang, but I personally don't use it anyway.

Now most of the differences I've described are pretty picky. I really think that the guitars are pretty close in overall design, but I never felt like the Wolfgang was an evolution like it was described, but maybe just a continuation of a concept with enough of a difference to make it stand apart. I love them both, and I would take one or the other any day over anything else I have.

Yep...that's why they cost more.....they simply cost more for the materials and the labor to produce. Still the imports are a great value for the price.

If you want to save some $$...go with the import. I have more money than talent so I went ahead and bought a beautiful cherryburst std on E-bay for $900 US....and have no regrets.

Having owned both myself, I wouldn't say I could choose one over the other. I would like to say however, I would compare a Wolfgang Special Flametop to the Musicman EVH because they are pretty much the same guitar. The necks are the biggest difference when it comes to the playability of the guitar. I feel the Musicman neck is smaller.marrower than a Wolfgangs. Looks are a matter of taste. If you like arch tops, i.e. Les Pauls...then try the Wolfgang Standard. Don't compare a Korean made Wolfgang to a US made Musicman EVH. Likewise...don't compare a OLP to a US made Wolfgang. My guitar for the past 9 years has been a Wolfgang Standard. I will keep that guitar the rest of my life. That said...I'd love to get a Musicman EVH. They are great guitars. But for a lot less money, you can get a Wolfgang Special Flametop, get it set up the way you like the guitar play...and be right there as far as sound and looks. The Musicman is a more balanced look...but the Wolfgangs look grew on me.

Once I jammed and played a green Wolfgang (mmmm and I have to say that I was drunk), and it is very nice (as I can remember). Of course I think that it's a good guitar and for some reason Eddie changed his signature from Ernie to Peavey, but I love the Ernie Ball/Music Man brand (I have my Steve Morse SM-Y2D).

I have a nice Peavey Wolfgang arch-top made of Bird's eye maple. Best sounding guitar I own. Plays like a dream too! My OLP knock-off is great as well. I modded it by swapping out the bridge PU for a Dimarzio ToneZone. Sounds as good as my wolfgang and actually has more bite and gain to it. The wolfgang still is a more controllable guitar though.
