Father and Son Jam Report

Holly Canoli, my son and I just finished a smoking jam session tonight. The kid (he's 12) has been learning double kick rythms from his teacher and has now attained a level where he has enough stamina and regularity to play quite a while.

We had not played together in over a month, and we started with a nasty riff I wrote, inspired by Dream Theater and Symphony X. Real heavy stuff in the prog metal style. The kid latched on to it and started hammering those kick pedals like it's nobody's business. He made up some wicked licks, all syncopated and with weird timing. Man, I created a monster by brainwashing the kid with Dream Theater at an early age!

We recorded the improv as we went, using my iPod and a recording attachment to capture the chords changes that I was making up as I went, so as to not forget them. I was going to put the recording up here, but the iPod was placed too close to my speakers and it sounds like a complete mudlisde, with distant drums in the back. That's a shame. So much for that.

Anyway we both had a real blast and will probably make some more noise as soon as my left arm recovers from the power chord assault.

Just wanted to share this.

Looking forward to hearing the clip, CC. Man, I've got to tell you, I can't wait untill my baby girl is old enough to learn guitar - I'm gonna make her into a Van Halenette!

Thanks, Raven.
We'll have to roll tape again for next jam. I'll try to find a better placement for the iPod this time. I listened to it this morning in the car and it's quite brutal on the old eardrums! In other words, this stuff is certified torture to listen to, from the distortion and saturation at low frequencies!

billandgitana is an unknown quantity at this point
I too will look forward to the next edition...and Yes it is priceless when you can share those moments...
I had one a few years back when my son was 8..and he just had to do a recording on guitar....he had a toy guitar from K-mart or somewhere so getting to play the real thing was something for him...he only new three chords..but he played them with a little rhythm to basic drum beat..
I still have that clip and of coarse he had to make a cd for himself to show up for his friends.

That's a good idea. Video taping it is also priceless.

Yes. Too bad he didn't get to shake Portnoy's hand last year when we met them backstage. We met all the band members except Mike, who got taken away in front of us to a meet and greet with platinum ticket holders after the show.
If the kid stick to it and practices enough, he'll turn out a decent drummer. He's a stage where he can make things up on he go, taking elements from his fav drummers, Bonham, Portnoy and System of a Down.
