Guitar/amp/lead problem?

Hi there guys.

When i am playing my guitar the volume changes, and sometimes it totally goes blank, and then suddenly the volume is back onto normal. Obviously, this is a huge problem! I was wondering if you could help me to solve the problem, or atleast identify what is causing it!

Many thanks, Tom.

you are not playing with that little knob that says Volume are you? Turn it clockwise and the volume goes down... counter-clockwise and the volume is at full. LOL i crack myself up

Any snapping or popping occur? Could be that your input jack is loose. Tighten it carefully so you don't twist off the wires underneath. Also, try a different cord first. Give us moe details as asked for above.

Re: Guitar/amp/lead problem?

Okay guys thanks a lot. I will have to wait until it occurs again until i can answer most of those Q's. Though i can confirm that i am not playing with the volume knob =P.

It might be the jack, but i don't think so. I also took the back plate off the guitar and there were no loose wires...

I will post when it happens again!

Re: Guitar/amp/lead problem?

ur amps volume knobs probaly got dust in them. happened to mine. try turning of the power first then turn the volume to full then back again and then back to your orginal setting. worked for me

This could most probably be the jack having one loose wire, or the cable u're using, or the input on the amp... i can't think of more common problems that cause ur pickups to fade.... if there was something wrong with the pickup itself... it wouldn't work at all.... or at least that's what i've seen so far...

If your amp has an FX loop, try to plug something in there a few times, in and out (amp off). Sometimes dirt builds there especially if you don't use it much and can create this sort of problem. Alternatively, a dirty volume pot would do that too. I think you should buy yourself a small can of electrical contact cleaner and use it on your pots, jack sockets, etc. Both on your amp and guitar. if the problem gets better or goes away entirely, you know what it was. If it doesn't, then you know what it's not, but you'll have clean contacts, which is a good thing anyway. We should all clean our pots from time to time.

True story ....
I had the same problem while playing a buddy's strat.
Volume kept turning down as I was playing.
I kept looking over at the sound guy thinking that maybe he was having problems.

Come to find out, because the volume knob is positioned so high on a Strat that I was accidently hitting the volume knob as I was playing.

I guess I'm just not a strat guy.
