Guitar neck question

i have a few questions about different necks on guitars.

i mean, what the difference between a 'set-in' and a 'neckthru' neck...if any. some guitar companies have their guitar specs saying that their guitar is a set-in guitar. yet online reviews say that the guitar is a neckthru neck.

how ever, i heard that a set-in is made of the same wood as the neck, so its literally an extension of the body. and it sort of acts like a bolt on neck, but isnt. and on a set in, its 'impossible' to reach the higher frets, kinda like a les paul with 24 frets. after the 21st fret, you cant really reach the 22-24th, or atleast not with ease.

and my second question is, you know how some of the Jackson (some washburns do the same...i think washburn came up with this) guitars, mainly their super-strats have a bolt on neck, yet they are without neck plate, and the area where the screws attach the body with the neck, the place is thinner, and this allows you to reach the higher frets with ease. sort of the nearest it gets to an actual neckthru neck. so, my question is, whatever the hell that is called, is it possible to have that on a guitar with a body of a randy rhaods, a king V body? i mean, if i instal a neck onto a V body with that extended cutaway, will the neck be able to support the neck? or will it be too fragile to really do anything. not that i torture my guitars, but i would like to have something that wont make me paranoid

EDIT: apparently its called a 'Stephen's Extended Cutaway'. washburn has a few of their modles with this, but a neck thru. i'm looking for something with a bold on neck...

reason i ask is coz i'm thinking of making another frankenstien guitar with a body of a randy rhaods, or a warrior or something. and all in all, the whole project would cost me about 700-800 dollars. and the neck would be a bolt on. however, with about 600-700, i can get a Cort guitar with a neckthru neck....so i rather make my guitar, but a neckthru is sort of important to me...

EDIT: like i said, neckthru's are sort of important to me...however, they are freaken expensive!!!! cort is the only company i know that has a neckthru guitar for less than a 1000. if you guys know of a company that does make neckthru guitars for around the price range for 600-800, let me know.

thank you

Hey my friend, remember the thread "neck thru's" started by Sir Chick, well you participated in it before I did and then I gave a pretty good explanation on neck thru builds that you probably didn't see.

Here is the link to that thread: its in the guitar rack probably still on the
1rst page.

If you find my posts helpful in that thread and you have any questions that I can further answer just hit me up!

Oh and the only difference between a "neck through body" and a "set in" I think you called it, is instead of the neck going all the way through the body and being a part of the body, they have a joint in the body of the guitar that the neck fits into and this is where the neck gets permanently mounted, before the finishing is done that disquises it.
Its a poor mans neck thru lol. Although some of the greatest sounding guitars have been made this way.

A "set in" is alot like a bolt on except it is mounted a little further in with a stronger joint and its mounted permanently.

With a neck thru, the body of the guitar is one third neck and you only have one shot at getting it right so you can probably see why its so expensive.
This will give you alot of sustain and physical instrument strength and is the preferred choice of many players. Its not my thing.

With the "Set in" design you get a little bit of the bolt on sound mixed with a little bit of the neck thru sound and its alot easier to make because you can fit the neck and make adjustments where with the neck thru it is what it is pretty much after its built.

Anyways the part that I just wrote will make alot more sense after you read my posts in this thread.

I hope this helps!
