How do you take the finish off a Les Paul neck?

I was watching the documentary in the Whitesnake DVD today. Doug Aldrich shows some of his stage guitars; all Les Pauls.
He shows how he has the finish striped off the back of the neck, so it feels smooth (back to bare wood).

This is something I would be interested in doing to my black Epi Les Paul; I don't care for the how the clear coat feels.

It looks like sanding would be the preferred way.

I imagine this would have to be done carefuly so as to not take off any wood.

Your comments?

Be careful on that epi. I did it to one of mine and it had epoxy paint on it and it took along time and was a pain. Plus you will need to seal the bare wood once you get it there.

Definitely seal it up if you sand it down to bare wood, I had a friend who stripped off a strat body and left it naked, it soaked up all sorts of oil and dirt and ended up looking like crud.

I have an unfinished neck on the Wolfgang and feed it with Lemon oil once a month. It makes it super slick and feeds the wood while keeping it clean.
