Great post! Your work here looks fantastic! What did you use to press the frets in, did you use glue? People should not be so timid about doing this kind of work on their own guitars. Even without patience (that's me) you can pretty much put together a great working guitar exactly to your own specs for little money.

It would be great to have a real press, but I just tapped them in with the wooden part of a hammer...they snap right in.
I did put just a drop of superglue at each end. Some people use a ton of glue while others use none. If they start lifting...I'll get out the glue and clamps and go to work.
I have several necks that I am attempting to level and recrown. Whats a good manufacturer and place to purchase? The frets range in size for each neck.
I will add to this when I build my DIY fret bender this weekend!
Did you get a chance to make the fret bender?

Hey thanks for the link to Stewie. Can you or any expert, brief me on the setup for taking into account "drop off" during the fret leveling process. I have read alot of setups on how to do it, all lacking a solid definition of this part of the level procedure. This seems to be a big part of the leveling process, in terms of doing it correctly.
I am still researching.....Thanks
I'd guess 99% of guys that do fret leveling do not put in fall off.
But if you want ultra low action then it needs to be done IMHO.
For falloff from frets 15-22 I like to put about 4 layers of blue tape over the 14th fret, then color the fret tops again with market and level from 14 to 22 just like you did before.
All you are really doing is making the upper registry frets shorter so they don't cause buzzing when trying to get 12th fret string height action of 2-3/64ths.
Nope...but I did get the wood and have all the tools. My weekend motivation has been a bit low lately with my weekly travel schedule and house renavation projects.
How much to fret jobs run now days? The last one i had done was $75 but that was in the late 80's, are they running about 200 or more now? I would almost try and do it myself if thats the case.
Well you've done a good job so far on the easy part . Let us know how it plays after levelling and crowning. Also if you decide to ever do another you might want to look into driving them out and putting them back in from the side. That method doesnt destroy the slots. You'd probably have to improvise a method for pushing them in though ? I 've never attempted this mind you but it just seems to me like it would be the best way to go about it. Also my thanks to the person who mentioned drop off. The fret work on a cheap bolt on neck that I've been messing with has been causing me grief and fret drop off never crossed my pea brain.

my fret job was $30, and it's flawless.

I was thinking of Refretting my Mexican Strat with Stewmac 149 fret wire.
But i know theres more to it that just pulling out the old ones and slapping some others in, well in some cases. I know you need the tang size to match your fret slots, i hear if its off it can damage your neck, warping etc. You would have to invest some money in tools to really do it right so i'm not so sure i wanna try it with just the basic fretting tools.
Has anyone refretted there strat with this similar size fret?
I tried the hunk of wood fret bender....but it did not work at all with the monster fret wire I used. I gave up and bought a really nice roller one on E-bay. So I refretted this neck again and it worked perfectly....no glue or anything. I used the biggest frets stew had and they are huge.....I love them. I have them all leveled off and it's playing great. I will get a crowning file so I can crown them off and dress the ends after a couple of months when I am sure everything is solid.
