Quick Question:

Say that you don't want to be able to pull up on the floyd rose (have it flush mount), do you have to route anything? For example, You have a strat style tremolo currently in the bridge, but you want a floyd like the Wolfgang... Would you still have to route anything for the bridge?

Also, the pivot screws, those six little circles in the middle of them... what do they do? Are they neccesary?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...Name=WDVW&rd=1

I was going to buy that body, it says it's ready for a floyd but there isn't six holes in between.

Sorry if the questions are stupid, I'm new to this.

The six hole's are for a standard trem. The floyd requires only two holes in the body. For the pivotscrews.(find a floyd rose picture) The floyd will cover the six holes when mounted.

As for the routing, this differs from guitarbrand to guitarbrand, model to model. On some guitars the cavity for the trem is big enough to fit a floyd, on some not...

My experience is that it's often hard to figure out (measure) if the floyd can be mounted straight into the old trem-hole, without having it in your hand...

Good luck!

Question...

Is there a certain distance the string retainer should be from the nut, or does it not matter as long as it's realtively close?

Try to get back as much as possible before hitting the first tuner, and make sure the string retainer still retains the string at the first tuner. Once in place, the string retainer needs to be lower than the nut to keep the strings against the nut so the strings won't go sharp when clamped down.

Yeh....for me when I install floyd roses (and thanks to EJ's instructions I have now installed 3 successfully) I place the string retainer so the angle of the strings coming off the nut is in line with the retainer...see diagram. This keeps the strings in tune when tightening the bolts (amazing what ya can do in MS Powerpoint)

EJ's pics are not posted but if you go to the "how to" section and look at my thread called "fretwork" you can see how I did it on a neck.

I have had a problem with my installations. I installed a licensed Floyd on my OLPMM1. Well.....several problems i spose but doing it the second time I've had a worse probelm. I measured 25" from the tip of the nut to where the center of the bushing goes. Drilled......unfortunately the low e side post is aoubt a 16th of an in too short. But the bigger problem is that the bridge is soo far up in the trem cavity that the back part of it on the high e side. Its off soo much that you can see part of the cavity. The trem doesn't cover it all up! Help-I'll get pics up later.

Thanks -TOm

First, take a breath. Now a shot of tequila. Remove the bushings and plug the holes with wodden dowel. There is some info on the first page of this thread. We are going to remeasure then redrill.

Once the holes are plugged and the glue you used to plug them with is dry (a day or so), set the Floyd back in the hole, and line up the edge of the bridge with the 6 holes from the previous trem. Once you line up the horizontal, then line up the vertical. Use a piece of string from the High and Low slots on the nut to BOTH outside saddles to make sure everything is lined up properly. Check the vertical again and make sure you didn't move the edge of the bridge. Check the horizontal again with the strings. Now carefully mark where you need to drill. In your case, I would measure everything one more time after you mark the drill spots just to be sure

Those OLP bodies are soft basswood, so adding a strong wooden dowel that fits nice and tight should allows you to redrill a third time. If you screw the pooch again, shoot me a PM and we can work something out Good luck!

Hmmm...see I lined the trem with the 6 original holes the first time. (used toothpicks) everything was perfectly lined with the holes. But the trem was not straight. This was causing intonation problems real bad. So are my 6 original holes not in a straight line or something?
First try:
