I need a good guitar for metal

Hey guys,

I've been playing guitar for about 3 years now. I currently own an Ovation acoustic steel-string, a Suzuki nylon-string, a Epiphone Les Paul Custom, and a 80's custom Stratocaster that my friend gave me.

Now I love all of my guitars, but in the last year or so, my favorite genre of music has shifted to metal (mainly power, prog, thrash, etc.). So basically, I'm looking for a good guitar that I can use that's under $1000 that would be ideal for this kind of music. I'm talking about a guitar that has a floyd rose, 24 frets, etc. I was looking into a Jem, and I like them, just they're way too expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh yeah, for a while I've been wanting to build a guitar that looks like this: http://64.162.150.71/JasonHalo.jpg . It looks so awesome. But I cant find a body that looks like that so that I can customize it (maple neck, HSH). Any help for that would be appreciated too.

What about the new Ibanez S470DXQM? Runs for around $650

A Jackson Dinky might suit you well. ESP artist models you might want to check out include Jeff Hanneman, Alexi Laiho or Kirk Hammett series. Also it seems a lot of younger players are gravitating towards the Dean Dimebag series. I played one of the lower end models and it squealed like a pig, in a good way.

And yes you usually won't go wrong with an Ibanez. If I was you I'd just plan a day long field trip to local guitar shop and try em all out.

The Becker guitar wouldn't be too hard to make, the hardest part is gunna be the fret markers on his guitar (the numbers). You could look into getting a Warmoth body, strat style and finished like his and then get the floyd, and the correctly colored pups and then I will guess you would have anywhere from 500 to 300 left (outta 1000) for a neck, and you could go with a real nice quality maple neck from Warmoth or others for a little less than 300 probably and not have the fret markers OR you could go all out and get a totally custom neck (can be done through Warmoth as well) for a bit more with the custom inlays.

Good luck!!

P.S. I think it would ROCK if you made a Becker replica!!!

P.S.S Rumor also holds that jackson (i think) may be making a limited run of Becker sig. Models for a Rumored movie if his life!!!

Jackson/Charvel, Ibanez, and ESP have been the top guitars of choice for shredding since the 80's. Don't go lower than $300 if you want it to last. Go for 24 frets, and be sure to get a double-locking tremolo so you can dive-bomb safely.

Good luck.

I would highly recommend Ibanez. If you can try and find an old one on ebay. That's where I got My 82 Destroyer II that rocks like no other. I can play anything with that guitar, And no whammy BS to deal with either. And the sustain! Hit a note and walk away! Effing Awesome!

I say get any guitar you like. You can always change the pickups for hotter pups for high gain/distortion ..but if you want to "look" like metal too ..well then..that narrows your choices. Huge name metal guitarists have used probably the whole gambit of guitars out there from les pauls, to strats to the real pointy guitars

I would recommend just about any guitar the other gents mentioned. Jackson, Ibanez, older Charvels, and of course the Schecter. The Ibanez RG series are great and aren't too expensive. I had a RG270 and it shredded. I had a Schecter and it was great. Check out www.musicgoround.com if you don't mind a used instrument and see if they have one in your area. If you are handy with tools and wiring try making your own from parts from ebay and other companies. That way you get a custom guitar that you make for metal. Good luck and have fun with the search.

Ok, well I've narrowed my search down to either a Jackson Dinky or an Ibanez RG. Still a wide search, really. So...which one of those two should I get? And if so which model? Keep in mind, I want something with 24 frets and a Floyd. Something that I can shred on. Both look so great, and I've tried them both out...I'm still clueless. Any help?
