indie/punk style

hey everyone.
i've been playing guitar for about 3 years now. i fool around by myself most of the times to backing tracks. most of what i play are very classic rock-ish, and a lot of the times directionless jams.
recently, some guys in my college invited me to join a band. however, they play indie/punk sort of stuff, which i'm really new to. In the first session we had, I constantly found myself very out of place musically. I felt like one of the biggest things was that since I'm used to bluesy improvisation stuff, I really had problems coming up with a definite structure to my playing. Plus my bandmates were telling me that they wanted a linear sort of rhythm whereas I was playing very syncopated rhythms. I definitely want to give it a bit more effort since i'm all up for experimentation. so I just wanted some suggestions on how i could approach this in terms of tones, exercises, soloing techniques, etc.
any input would be much appreciated.

Hey, I'm more of a punk/emo guy myself when it comes to newer alternative, but my suggestion would be to just get a lot of albums of the genre, and just listen to them, play to them, pick out anything you can and bash it into your memory. When I think Indie the Get Up Kids usually pop into my head, but thats just me.
