esoteric, I'm not really a squire guy but there's a lot of "value" packs out there from different manufacturers. If you've never played before then one of these is a great idea. We all started somewhere!

I wouldn't get the value packs. They actually are of resonable quality. But you can get a better guitar buying it serpate of a value pack. Plus the amp is horrible(Although I use a bass amp from a friends value pack and get a sweeet blues clean tone...go figure). Now about 80% of my gear is used nd I love all of it. So if you can get someone who knows anything about guitars to check out a used guitar before you buy its the best way to get good equipment for a good price.

No imo. I would buy a better quality used guitar with that much money and v-amp2's come around for about $50...and use the PC to jam from. A crappy startup set will not get you far imo. If you did want to go a budget combo, there are at least cheaper things out there (and if you really, really are not willing to buy used which would be my first and strongest recommendation), then this is a cheaper way to go and I am sure the quality would be similar: http://www.rondomusic.net/sst62kdoublepack.html

Hi!
Well, i didn't start with one of those combos (old cousin with old guitar ). However, i donīt see why not. I assume that you are a begginer and so, squier will work just fine (i mean, u don't expect to go live tomorrow right, although squiers can do that to).
I've played with squiers and it's a fair guitar for the price. It has good clean sound, good crunch and, if you're carefull with the electric components (some have connection problems, wires comming of...) it will last a life time (or so). Here is a website that has lots of (i belive) fais reviews on any equipment u can think of: www.harmony-central.com. It has reviews on those packs and in each piece of hardwear of the combo.
Just one more thing, if some day u wan't to upgrade you're gear (and u probably will) don't count on selling this equipment because no one will buy it.

But if u are on a budget, go ahead, itīs not a 2000$ gibson but it's a 250$ guitar

I have to agree with 3F. I have tried those amps and they are junk IMO.

If I were just starting out I would spend $250 by getting an Music Man OLP and a V-amp2.

You could get both used on E-bay for about $150 total.

I will take a different route... If you are a beginner a starter pack is a good choice, mainly because you ensure you get everything you need to start off with.

The mentions of getting a used guitar and a vamp are good if you have played for a little bit of time... but if you havent all the features of a vamp will be lost becasue you wont know what you are doing with it. Sure you can read the manual and ask questions but when you first start out.. fiddling with a piece of gear to figure out how to work it is a PITA.

There are much better starter packages then the squier packs though... shop around, dean/ibanez/peavy all make good starter packs as well.. that are probably cheaper.

I would stay away from starter packs. It doesn't seem to represent good value. Even if I knew nothing about guitars it's best to risk it buying second hand. Get it from a shop, where you get a warranty, if you don't have anybody to help you. The main point is it has to be reasonably set ups. Often starter packs are not set up at all... it could be very frustrating for a beginner. You could get a s/h Squier, or Yamaha... and get a small practice amp, like a Roland Microcube... that will cost you less than the package mentioned, and will get you further. Any money you save, use it to see a teacher to get a couple of lessons to get you started.Better still... get a teacher to assist you to buy a guitar/amp. He/she might already know of somebodyselling gear that might be suitable.
