Jimmy page

everytime i hear somebody saying Clapton is the best player in the world or he is God , when i think we all know the real Messiah of rock guitar is non other than Jimmy Page , going back in time before Clapton , even played on TV when he was a kid , then went through all the session stuff , into the Yardbirds and Zeppelin constantly writing killer tunes , he must of made Gibson a fortune , and he is still around working for charity and keen as mustard to record new stuff . When in all that time Clapton has done a bit of Reggae , "yawn " and nothing , so lets keep things in perspective , get out your spray cans and write on your nearest wall , Page is God !

Re: Jimmy page

I was never into Clapton much but I respect him. I like Jimmy page even though his playing can sometimes be a bit sloppy. But thats ok cause thats his style and his riff are cool. Hell, I play sloppy sometimes too. I think Stevie Ray Vaughn blew away Clapton. Kenny Wayne Sheppard is even better than Clapton in my opinion. But what do I know? I'm a Metal head!

Re: Jimmy page

I was always a huge Jimmy Page fan...Clapton, I really never listened to until very recently (like 4 yrs or so)...I think I missed a lot by not listening to more of his playing. But I think, all the former players laid the groundwork for the later players...in a way it's like what Einsein said about all his discoveries were made "Standing on the shoulders of Giants" meaning some great people stood before him to help him arrive at his conclusions. Whomever is god, the disciples are in good company...

Re: Jimmy page

I dont think you should compare musicians... music is about taste...To look down on the person that wrote layla is pretty shitty though.....

Re: Jimmy page

The difference is Clapton blew his load with Cream. He has done nothing of any real significance save maybe Derek and the Dominoes, but then again it was Duane Allman that stole the show on that.

Page didn't really blow his load until the time of The Firm. He did great session work after Zeppelin...the soundtrack to Death Wish II was awesome. He tried his hand, successfully, at many more styles than any other guitarists to date. Sure SRV played a better blues than Page, but what else? Page played sitar, mandolin, reggae, indian, eastern influenced tunes. I think it sucks to have to compare all the favorites I was weened on but I have to say for longevity, influence, variety, tone, and sheer stage presence that Page takes the crown.

Re: Jimmy page

my only comment on this is that more guitarist state the Jimmy Page is an Influence than any other guitar player....by miles! Sloppy or not...his heart is there...my opinion is the greatest guitarist are not the ones that can play fast or cool scales, but the ones who write great songs(Page, Halen etc)...in turn, will write great solos too

Lets have an influence perspective here. I have an interview in which Jimmy Page talks about being blown away on first listening to Scotty Moore and he talks about Reinhardt and the jazz guys. Eric Clapton in interviews talks about the blues players that influenced his playing. Different styles different genres if you want show in theri playing. And both have in their own way influenced the late 60's early 70's bands in the States, Joe Perry will happily tell you how big the Yardbirds were.

Jimmy was very good, and influenced tons of guitarists, including myself. The problem is that he didn't do much for the guitar after the Sixties. Playing wise, he was good, but not terribly innovative. Riff wise, sure, he was the shit. Solo wise, he was unique, and set a standard, but he didn't do a lot for the guitar. I mean, after Hendrix, what more can be said? Richard Thompson, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Alex Lifeson... These guys really did something.

I'm not insulting Page in any way, obviously, because before 1970, he did a lot for the guitar. The whole pentatonic thing, though... Let's just say, that no newbie player should strive to just be Jimmy Page. The worst thing one can do is limit one's self to just the standards of another player.

The facts (as invented by me)

Mr. Clapton: helped usher in Electric blues-rock with the BluesBreakers, classic album. Cream would have been the Jimi Hendrix Experience if Jimi Hendrix had taken that job at a steel mill and stayed in America. His problem is that post-hendrix (and he's stated in interviews before) that he felt he had to change his style more because Hendrix overshadowed him. I don't think he ever really recovered to his Pre-Hendrix statues after that. Later on he tried to change and fit the new music scenes, but in doing so I THINK he strayed too far from his roots. However very recently he played on Sonny Landreth's album From The Reach, and his stuff was PHENOMENAL. Look it up on iTunes or youtube or wherever the hell. (His songs were "when I still had you" and "Storm of Worry".)

Mr. Page: helped usher in the Hard Rock-Metal era w/ Zeppelin and made some darn good stuff w/ the Yardbirds and those early days. He I say reached his peak with Led Zeppelin IV and never really reached those heights again. After IV he deviated from the Hard Rock/Blues/Jazz style he did so well in into stuff like Reggae (him too, D'Yer Mak'er anybody?) and eastern modal music (Kashmir, duh). Some worked, and some didn't. Given his eclectic portfolio, I can't really say how he would have progressed post-1980, but I don't think it would have changed radically. EVH took the reins from the 70's, and Page just doesn't do 80's music. Recent reevaluation will be seen with this new documentary THis Might Get Loud, but looks like he hasn't slowed down too much.

I'd rate them equally in music contribution, Clapton for blues and Page for rock. Everyone nowadays still recognizes Black Dog or Sunshine of Your Love. To all of the detractors, you can't just condense someone's entire career to "a few riffs and solos" or "just some reggae stuff".

I prefer to listen to Mr. Page more currently, because I'm at the point where pure blues isn't doing it for me, and his more exploratory paths (Led Zeppelin III) are better listening for me than more pure blues. But I saw Clapton at Crossroads '04, and he's still kickin hard.

i think im here just for the fuck of having something to do at half 2 in the morning...
but yeah, people are right, page and clapton are 2 different guitarists...page on one hand plays incredibly catchy riffs with a lot of gain and sustain..he plays sloppy but it suits him and the way he plays....clapton however is usually a lot more accurate and direct...he keeps his playing tight with an often twangy blues sound from his strat so personally i dont think its fair to compare the 2 when they both play very differently...some prefer clapton, some prefer page...they are both kickass guitarists and should both be recognised so...........but i have to admit...i do prefer page! =D
