Steve vai or john petrucci

both i admire because they put in all styles and cultures of music in their recordings

they know how to create tone from their fingers, and they have studied for years and years

others like satch kinda stick to a lighter form of instrumental rock or they just stick to their genre

good examples of petrucci would be his work in the liquid tension exp...they had everything from jazz to metal in there

+1 for Vai. While he and Satch are cut from the same cloth, Vai explores areas and sounds the Joe never ventures into. I was rather let down by the latest Satch album...I knew the licks he was going to use before he did them. With Vai, it's always a surprise...he has a standard bag of tricks, but it's where he uses them is the key. And just when you think you have him figured out, he pulls something way out of left field that makes you go "whoa!"

Hmmm,
I'd have to go with Alex Lifeson.

If you play, you know

While he may not have the chops of Vai I think Rik Emmett is pretty versitle. Jazz, Hard Rock, Classical and can sing.

Paul Wagoner from between the buried and me is the most versatile guitarist I've ever heard.
