Pick up selector question...

From a friend of mine... Using an Epiphone Les Paul...

Quote:
when you set the pick-up selector switch to the middle position should you be able to control the vol and tone of both pick-ups as only the bridge pick up vol affects the sound. If I turn this down and the then neck pick-up up their is no sound???

Is this normal ? I just turn everything up on guitars, so don't know about this...

When I had my 71 Les Paul, for live playing, I would set the pickup selector to the middle position with the bridge pickup turned up full, I would then turn up the front pickup just enough to get a nice crunch for chords, then for leads I would just flick the switch to the bridge pickup for a boost in volume and a nice lead sound. So I guess what I am saying is that as far as I remember, you should be able to adjust the pups seperately no matter which posiiton the switch is in. Unless they have changed their wiring since I had my LP.

With the new wiring on LP's and EPI LP's it ends up running both pickups off one volume, one tone... Its a simple rewire mod so that both volumes and tones work independently of the other.

Heres the mod for that

Yw Mondy.. I couldnt tell you how many I have done that mod too. All older Gibsons/EPI's were wired for independent... when they went to the plug in connectors, they changed it .... god only knows why.

Ahhh, I guess I'm getting old, I hadn't heard that they had changed the wiring, but I suspected it.

The first one i found like that was a Korean EPI. and thought well. joe the wiring guy was just off that day.... after about 4 I decided to find out from Gibson wtf they were doing. Seems like they decided the change didnt much matter to them and was considered an "upgrade" in wiring.... Im sure the guy still remembers what I thought of their "upgrade".
