Some help, fellas.
My son is starting to gain interest in the guitar. He's a lefty and he's been playing my guitars right-handed. He says it's comfortable, but I don't see him being able to pick or fingerpick with his non-dominant hand. What do you guys think?

I'm a lefty and play right handed...it's true that the picking is harder at first BUT that is offset by the fact that the fretting is easier. I had to work to get my right hand to 'answer' to my left but I wouldn't change back because you can get a wicked legato with the stronger hand. I'd say let him choose.Hope this helps.

Re: Some help, fellas.
didnt hendrix play like that? he played a right handed guitar left handed.
waaaaiit...
you mean like... hes playing the right-handed guitar as a person would play a LEFT-handed guitar? or hes playing the right-handed guitar as a person would normally play a right-handed guitar?
lol... you know what i mean? i think theres a difference.... i dont know
well... either way, i guess hendrix did that.. (and im sure a bunch of others have over time).. and we all know he did great. over time it'll feel right for him, whatever he does. he'll get used to it i guess.
lol... well... hope that was... some help. good luck, man.

My buddy is a lefty who plays right handed also and he shreds. One thing I noticed though is that when he pulls off with his left hand he always does it upwards instead of the normal downwards, not sure if it's becuase he's a lefty or not

I do it both ways Eric but find you can really dig deep if you pull upwards but only from the G string down...not enough space to do the other two. I use this when I'm doing a 'Zakk' or, my favourite, a 'Lifeson'!

Re: Some help, fellas.
I'm left handed but play right handed guitar and my feeling is that it is backwards , right handed guitar should be called left because the left hand does most the work.

Re: Some help, fellas.
Well, think of it like this.. When you pick one note with your right hand and pull off three (say triplets) with your left hand you normally pull downwards when you do it.

Re: Some help, fellas.
I play lefthanded and i own 3 lefthanded guitars to boot. nothing wrong with playing lefthanded,, just that the options in guitars is less than if you were to play right.. besides.. alot of great lefthanded musicians out there.. you son could be the next one. dont try and change him let him play the way he feels he should play in my opinion. it felt awkward for me when i started .. i was same way i owned a right handed guitar and to find out,, i was more comfortable playing lefthanded and all so my guitar teacher redid the right handed acoustic to make it lefthanded so i could play the way it felt for me to play.

Re: Some help, fellas.
I am a lefty and Dad made me learn right-handed back in the early '60s.
Let him use one of yer geetars and string it upside down like McCartney did in the early Beatle years; when he decides which way is more comfortable for him, get him a Wolfie Special *grin*
