The first song you learned
This is of course a question for axe slingers.
The first song I ever learned was Jimi Hendrix' Manic Depression. I actually still can't play it in its entirety (as it is the case with most of the songs I ever tried to learn).

Re: The first song you learned
Hmmm... can't remember what the very first was, but I can tell you a few of them.
Back in Black, AC/DC
Lay It On The Line, Triumph
Jack and Diane, John Cougar Melonhead
Diary Of A Madman, Ozzy
Sweet Home Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd
Hell, I think I may still have my tablet from my lessons at 13 around here somewhere - that would be good for a few laughs and surprises.

Uh.. Smoke on the water and Stairway to heaven. I could also shred wipeout all on the high E string

Re: The first song you learned
The first thing that I remember figuring out by myself was a tune that was on the radio at the time.
It was a dance tune played on the keyboard. I have no idea what the tune was called, but it was a massive hit in the UK. It had a bit where a guy yelled, "Yo D.J., where's the bass ?"
But the first song I remember learning all the way through was Mr. Big's "To Be With You". I may have learnt other ones before then, but I can't remember.
This is the first, and probably one of the only ones I have sat down and pushed myself to learn from the tablature.
I've still got loads of riffs that I know from songs, but there are very few that I can play all the way through. The only other song that I know properly all the way through is Ugly Kid Joe's Everything About You.
But, I am trying to rectify this by finally learning Panama and Unchained all the way through. But jeez, they're bloody hard for a crap player like me...

Re: The first song you learned
I can't exactly remember, but it was either "Panama" or "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", albeit with no solos included.
Years later, I learned "Hot For Teacher", but I still can't remember the solo...

Re: The first song you learned
Which solo dude, the opening or middle? The solo in the middle is extremely hard I think, one of the many cases where Ed shows his true natural ability

Re: The first song you learned
Jessie's Girl by Rick Springfield. Then the regulars: You Really Got Me (VH version ofcourse), Paranoid, Crazy Train, Pretty Woman (VH again). Actually asides from the Rick S. song those other tunes were part of our set list for my 1st few gigs in junior high (back then we called it middle school). I wish I had a video of that. Tube socks up to my knees. LOL

LoL Joy!
I think mine was "Ballroom Blitz" or "Night Moves".
My older brother had a guitar and he did'nt want me to touch it.So I had to sneak into his room and play it when he was'nt home and within 6 months I was better than him and all of his guitar buddies.........he fucking HATED that!

I would have to say the guitar theme for Wipeout. My uncle ran a music store and taught all his students surf tunes to teach them to play rock n' roll.
I wasn't one of his students, so I pretty much taught it to myself so I could jam with his students, (along with all the rest of the old surf standards) since most were around my age.
I still get to do it now and then on when someone in the audience wants to annoy the drummer.

I still play Jessie's Girl once in awhile!
I would have to say I think my first songs were either Smoke on the Water, or Fly by Night. Didn;t matter who you were, but if you grew up in a particular area, those songs were customary to learn first. Even if you didn't like them. Go figure...

Re: The first song you learned
My first song was 'pictures of you and matchstick men' by status quo.

Actually my first song is kind of embarrassing....I think it was 'Love is all Around' by Wet Wet Wet!!!
I was kind of into indie/grunge bands for a couple of years...and then a friend of mine (who incidently is a absolutely phenominal guitar player himself) lent me Vulgar Display of Power by Pantera.....I've kind of never looked back since then.
