Me neither, Neil Young is probably one of the best guitarists, people just think his wild approach makes him sucky... But when i hear his playing, i always get a big kick out of it. Hes an amazing guitarist.

Thers alot of hypocritical remarks and comments in this thread and im doing my best not to fall into that trap ... i think everyone who picks up the guitar and gives it a go deserves credit in some form or another. alot of people just dont bother learning any instrument, they go through life like a drone doing what nanny tells em. Playing an instrument is a joy and the fullfillment and sense of acheivment it instills in people makes the work you gotta put into it to get decent so worthwhile... alot of players who get credited for being the "best guitarists" really dont know the guitar as an instrument all too well... people like kurt cobain, hes a popular example. The man wrote some pretty good songs, not really to my taste but he is recognised as creating a genre and people loved it for a while. Some continue to love it. Just because i dont like that music doesnt mean it sucks. But to me... what does suck... is putting him in a top 100 guitarists list. If he was alive and you told him he was in it he would probably laugh in your face, cause he knows he isnt THAT good on guitar. hes a songwriter who uses the guitar as a means to sing his songs and project them. As far as technical proficiency goes he isnt too hot.
Stiglar made a point i believe in another thread... if you make a Top 10 Supercars list. Are you going to put an old busted up Mini on there?. I think not. Best guitarists in my eyes are the technically most profficient players of the instrument. NOT the best songwriters. Infact most super fast players suck at songwriting lol. But thats another story.
People will ALWAYS have major disagreements on subjects like this because one persons passion is another persons hate.
Umm... my Original point is... Technically... Putting Richie Kotzen in a worst guitarists list is laughable lol. He is pretty great on his instrument... go ahead n put him in a worst songwriters list maybe. But not a worst guitarists list.
*waits for people to read this and get the wrong end of the stick and spark off the entire debate all over again*

I go his instructional video, if anyone (yes DB i actually agree with you) can play 20% of those chops on the video-you can talk about richie. I can of course, but i agree worst guitarist no way!!!

Ok for those who still defend the guitar abilities of Kurt Cobain, Joe Strummer, Neil Young, etc.
Is the chick from the White Stripes a better drummer than Neil Peart? Buddy Rich? How about Alex Van Halen? I give you she is better than the guy from Glass Tiger but that maybe it.
Kurt Cobain also sang. Is he a better vocalist than Freddy Mercury? How about Robert Plant? Geoff Tate?
Is Gene Simmons a better bass player than Geddy Lee? Billy Sheehan? Jaco Pastorious?

I could say something logical like:
"Who gives a shit, honestly? If you don't like them, don't listen to it."
But... no wait, I'll stick to the above.

What About Morello?
Tom Morello seems like a nice guy and I respect how he carries himself, but my god, this guy has made a career out of the Immigrant Song and How Many More Times. LISTEN TO HIS RIFFS- all in F and The F octave or the tried and true high E to low E through a chromatic /pentatonic descending scale.Yawn.....The guy is petrified of hitting more than one note at a time. And the solos, its Whammy pedal time Yeehaw...big deal. That solo from "like a stone" is probably the only solo that I can actually laugh at and cringe at at the same time. The guy is tone deaf. I gotta take exception to the Cobain bashing though, he admitted he wasnt technically great and understood it didnt matter if he couldnt wank, just play with feeling, ANY feeling, and he succeeded at that. You could always tell it was him playing and at the time that approach was new and overdue. When you can tell whose playing by a few chords, thats something all players should aspire to. Same with Mick Mars, his sound is undeniably him, and now in his late 50's he is actually the best hes ever been.If you wanna bash on the hair farmers, its all about CC Deville (another tone deaf monkey), those two punks from Warrant (Mike Slamer had to bail them out) etc. Im done.

This has to be the most ill conceived post I have read for a long time. Very naive and ultimately pointless comparisons. Strummer touched a generation with his music as well as pioneering punk and he will always be remembered as a songwriter first and foremost.
Neil Young is a superb songwriter, he even made Dylan sit up and take notice. and the Needle and the Damage done is a beautiful guitar piece.
Kurt Cobain was a great songwriter too. And an effective guitarist to boot.
You are focusing too much on technique ziggy - there is more to life than technical ability.
