Firstly play around with the guitar is it easy to play with, is the tone is good? Then sit down and play it is it comfortable? Then of course plug it into various amps and try it out, try it with smooth jazzy sounds and hard rock sounds to test it's versitility.

Usually I play clean and dirty channels. As for what I am playing at that particular time, it depends. If there is music coming over the sound system in the store, i just jam with that for a bit, either playing chords with the songs or improvising a solo. Then when I get a quiet moment between songs, I do a little riffage of what I was poreviously playing to hear the guitar without background music.

No matter what you do, playing the guitar with something you are comfortable with will help you focus on the instrument itself.

a straightforward A power chord to start with. Check the tuning, then a little blues, then some rock and a few fast licks. It's all in the neck for me so I pretty much give up after 20 seconds if the neck feels wrong. If it's a good one, then I'll try the pickups on different settings, see how smooth the vol and tone pots are and see how it's weighted (will it see on my knee and not go neckdown like a dying swan!). Then I look at the pricetag and walk out.

You lucky dudes! Me, as a southpaw playing on lefties, I never had a chance to try my guitars (I only have two, one acoustic and one electric), I just had to deal with what came up after ordering them, . But I´m happy with both.
