Wondering what was everyone's 1st experinece with Eruption. Ok get your mind outta the gutter (temporarily), I mean the solo.
I was air guitaring with a buddy to his mix tape. Eruption came on. I stopped jumping around and just listened in awww. No turning back after that day.

Re: Your 1st Eruption
I can't remember the first time I heard it exactly but I remember how it sounding larger than life with it's heavy, crunchy tone and all the reverb. He has such talented fingers and a great feel for notes, I can never get enough of his style.

I really can't remember it either.
All I know is that to this day Eddie's tone gives me chills.

I don't remember the first time but I do know it did cause me to stop whatever I was doing and to the genius coming from that 8-track.

Re: Your 1st Eruption
Spanish Fly had the same effect on my. At the time I was playing my sister's spanish guitar and couldn't figure out for the life of me how Ed could make such a geeky instrument (to me) sound so damn cool.

Re: Your 1st Eruption
A friend brought round VH1 and at the time I was a mad Rush fan...I think Farewell To Kings or maybe Hemispheres had come out (check em out people..more awesome guitar work!). Anyway, he was going ballistic about this track and I said 'well put it on, I doubt it's anything I haven't heard before'-I was 16, had been playing guitar for 8 years and as far as I was concerned, Alex Lifeson WAS God! He put Eruption on and...I sat there with my mouth wide open as I tried to take in what I was hearing. I still get goosebumps to this day and I try and play the fuckin' thing about twice a week in Unchained...NEVER as good as Eddie-NEVER!!!

Re: Your 1st Eruption
My first Halen album was VHII, and I had already been blown away by Ed's playing on it by the time I bought the first album a few weeks later. I think if I hadn't have already heard "Spanish Fly", "Somebody Get Me a Doctor", etc., "Eruption" would have made me have a heart attack on first listen. I guess I should consider myself lucky that I had already been introduced to Ed's style before my first listen to Eruption.
That said, it still hit me what an amazing instrumental it was. Duh... how could it not?
Even listening to it to this day, the sonic onslaught is amazing. Dripping with reverb. That cool slow flanged sweep. The string-skipping gymnastics, flurried picking, smooth legato phrases, and of course - the amazing classical flavored tapped passage that set it all off yet was never duplicated again. All other players sounded calculated to me after that when they tapped. Nobody had the "feel" that Ed had. Some of them may have been faster, some more technically proficient as players... but they didn't have what Ed had.
I immediately learned how to play as much of it as I could, considering I had a stoptail bridge on the guitar I was playing at the time. Even to this day, after playing it for some 20 years, I still get a great feeling of accomplishment and a real rush out of it. I consistently use it during warmups or when I am just farting around to keep fresh.
I still smile and get chills when I listen to Ed's recorded version.

Re: Your 1st Eruption
i love it right at the end when he finishes the tapping and he hits the E .. well Eb and drops the bar down and you get like this huge delay reverb thing going
i've always thought and it just reminds me of a huge wave coming in and crashing down ..
maybe that's just me lol

Re: Your 1st Eruption
OK.....I'll chime in here.
The first time I heard Eruption, I thought "what the f**k is that?".
It was the most awsome thing I had ever heard at the time.
I still get the chills when I hear it.
I kinda had the same chill when I first heard Gary Moore's "End of the world" solo or Nuno's solo before "I don't wanna go to school today".
I never really tried to tackle Eruption until recently though.........I mean like note for note.

I never tried to tackle Eruption. Ever.
Maybe one day I'll work up the ball to try.
