Gary Moore \'The Loner\'
I've been looking for a decent backing track for this track for ages...the one I had was pretty awful. Anyway, found it and put this together. I'm not convinced my strat is working properly as it wasn't giving me the output I expected on the Hotrails. Gotta say this one is difficult because there's nowhere to hide with it like others...if you play guitar, you'll know what I mean; sometimes you can throw a little flash thing to fill a gap. But this one is all about bending the notes perfect and using natural vibrato. I found the hardest thing was keeping the rest of the strings quiet when I was at the top end of the guitar. The other bit that took me ages (years ago tho') to learn is at about 2.25 into the track. He bends the B string 4 frets in a row but with half and full steps! If you get this wrong it sounds fuc-ing awful. It's not perfect (they never are!) but it's better than the one I did 12 months ago.

Re: Gary Moore \'The Loner\'
wow you managed to get some of those bends SO good ! and didn't sacrifice the melody ... and sometimes the hardest part about those bends is continuing somethign else *after* you've done the huge bend ... i think you pulled it off well! not to mention you pulled off some classic gary moore fast licks in there ... this sounds great you rock wah wah !

Thanks people...thing is Stig, you can't really play anything else BUT the way gary plays it note for note or it loses it. I would say it's one of the hardest Moore songs to play because of the need for control-I'd find doing his fast solo's easier. I'm gonna have a go at one of his 'Blues' tracks next...I have the backing to a heap of his stuff...a cd's worth anyway. I'll keep ya posted.

Oh, and Stig, you don't want to know how long I practised that 4 note bend! I'm talking MONTHS to get the thing pitched to the right notes!

Re: Gary Moore \'The Loner\'
well, guess who is Gary Moore's hero? Yep, Jeff Beck. I think he has a more fluid style down to his use of Les Paul instead of strat but I did that on my strat so it's not impossible-just fucking noisy! There's one bit where I switch between the bridge and neck pickup and back again and I was really conscious of how noisy my neck pickup is because it's just a stock squier one...I had to make sure there were no deadstops otherwise all you would have heard was a noise akin to Frankensteins laboratory when he switches the generator on!!!! Because We Ended As Lovers is a lot more difficult to me cos it's not swamped by strings which makes it less easy to hide some errors. Got a Beck story which is pretty funny if ya wanna hear it-don't wanna bore ya's?

Re: Gary Moore \'The Loner\'
Ok...I was in the North East at my wife's Grandfathers funeral and we were at the wake afterwards. You know how these things are; old friends and relatives who don't see each other very often shooting the shit and talking about old times. It's all the more for us because we moved to the big city back in 1986 and lost touch with a lot of my wife's relatives from the area we were born in. Anyway, we were talking to the Vicar about how nice the service was and he was asking about one of Annie's (my wife) cousins who he hadn't seen for a good few years. Annie's Auntie said, 'Oh, she's moved to London now and is going out with Jeffrey-she's a model-I'll just go and get a photo'. So off she goes and I'm thinking this girl must be about 15 years old or something. She comes back with 2 photos. The first one has her topless with a fucking awesome set of boobs! We all look-including the Vicar! Annie's Auntie says, 'Yeah, she'a Page 3 model'! I'm totally impressed that my wife has a cousin with big jugs who medels for The Sun! Then she shows us the next picture and says 'Thats her with Jeffrey'. So I look and there's JEFF BECK looking back at me!!! I'm like 'B-B-BUT THATS J-J-EFF BECK!!!!!And she says, 'Oh I think he used to play the guitar a bit back in the '60's!!!!!!'...understatement of the decade! So now I'm TOTALLY knocked out...my wife has a Page 3 girl cousin who goes out with JEFF FUCKING BECK!!! So I picked her brains for hours and she promised me she'd get me some passes for when he played Hammersmith Odeon...sadly he ditched the Page 3 cousin for a newer model and I never got to meet him! Fucking funny tho'!
