LMAO Rol and I don't really believe in the EVH pickup (some think it's necessary to achieve the early tone), so We're sending folks over from the VHforums to listen to a stock wolfie do early VH.

Re: Meanstreets with intro - J-Mart

I have always thought there were a good many pickups that could get that sound, espesially pickups that don't cost the price of 3.

Re: Meanstreets with intro - J-Mart

That's another nice clip, man! Great playing. IMO it has a bit too much gain for the main guitar sound, but the truth is everybody has different ears. It is right on for the intro part, which EVH recorded with a different guitar that is brighter sounding and may have been boosted to add gain. I think your VHI clips are the most convincing because the level of gain on that album is higher than the subsequent Dave-era records.

As far as I can tell, with the right amp and guitar, any pickup in the 8.5-9K range will get the early VH sound. You don't need the Duncan EVH. I happen to like the way it sounds, but I've heard Armstrong, Voodoo, Holmes, etc. pickups that sounded just about the same. Those range from $65 - $160...

My 2 cents...

Steve

With everything else in the equation; amp, guitar, effects, settings, style of playing...I've never thought the pickups matter as much as everything else. I loved my SD Jeff Beck but it had WAY too much sustain on my Les Paul. Underpowered pickups are another matter-like those select jobbies they put on some superstrats but in the main it's all in the setup and playing personally...my two penneth also.

Holy shit that's incredible! The intro tone is *perfect*. Thank god I have a wolfie, now I just need a super lead. What's the URL for the people who mod your amps?

As always J-Mart...the playing and tone are flat out nailed.

For all the people out there that think Wolfie PUPs sound like crap....if you still think so after listening to that clip.....you are full of it!!!!
