Pink Floyd Cover - Wish You Were Here
I wanted to test recording on my portable setup:
- 4 year old Duron 800Mhz Vaio laptop with 512MB RAM
- My trusty M-Audio Firewire 410
- Cubase SE
- ONLY FREEBIE VST PLUGINS! That's right, no Ozone or Amplitube here. Prolly not enuff ram for those plugins anyway...
- PodXT
- Shure Beta 57A microphone
- Old Charvel Acoustic Guitar
Going to do some gig recording (2track live stuff) and just wanted to make shure my simple setup would suffice.
So viola. I would be interested in comments detailing if this sounds ok, you know, like the usual stuff I produce from my desktop DAW. Close maybe? I'm curious. Thanks for listening. Hope you like.

SG, 3F thanks guys.
Oh, Sergio, the PREs on the FW410 + the pod really do all the work for you. You know what I'm talking 'bout cuz your stuff sounds killer.
I am stoked to use this unit. I am glad to get some use out of something that was collecting dust. Just need to make sure beer doesn't get spilled on this or that it doesn't get knocked over.

Good skills there stingx. The mobile setup fares really well. This is a great recording ! The acoustic sounds great, and the mix of everything is just right, as usual !
Thanx for sharing !

Awesome thin, tinny sound on the intro guitar. Fantastic sound-just like on the record
The accoustic has a lot of stereo dimension and cutting tone.
Interesting twangy tone on the main melody electric guitar. Is it a tad out of tune or is it my ears.
Nice vox and intimate feel by the way you sing, m8...
This is a very impressive cover of this classic song. Thanks for sharing.

Great work on this song - one of my all time favorite Floyd tunes. Tell me though - was the Charvel mic'd up or is it a model that has the built in accoustic pickups? If it was mic'd - I need some pointers from you cuz I can NEVER get a satisfying tone when I mic up an accoustic.

Thanks guys. I'm glad you enjoyed this.
RJ, I don't understand why Charvel discontinued this guitar. I bought it back in the late 80s when I was still performing. It may not be a $2500 Martin but it is the only one of 2 acoustics I have kept over the years. One of the things that makes it easy on the ears is the built in Fishman preamp (it's an acoustic/electric). You can zero in your sound pretty nicely with the built in EQ. This went direct through the m-audio 410 2x, and through the podxt 2x being used only as a preamp with no gadgets turned on. Extra effects were the freebies I found on the web...limiter, compressor, echo, verb, etc. The Vst effects were used to make all the tracks very WIDE and everything was pushed to red line to sound large.
The beauty of the old laptop is that everything was upgradeable. I already replaced the old 10GB HD with a 80GB 7200 rpm I picked up at a computer show. I use the old one in a tiny firewire case to take tracks back and forth to my friends to work on. I can add more ram and will max it out at 1gb next week when I go to the next show.
I ordered a mobile Athlon 1.2Ghz cpu from egghead this afternoon from work and will swap the duron out when it arrives. For less than 180 bucks I revitalized an old notebook. The screen is gorgeous on this thing...glad I can still find a use for it.
