"Snow Blind"-Styx...JPF & sgstd
Not one of Styx's most known tunes. It was written by James Young about his cocaine problem. John did the vocals here...and man, did he nail this!!! The handful of people that know this song will be stunned at John's recreation of this. All I did was doctor the midi track and add the guitars. John brought it to life!!!Thx for joining me with this John!!!
Hope ya's enjoy this!!

Being a young lad of about 11 or 12 at the time (early 80s), Styx's Paradise Theater was the second album i ever bought (the first being REO Speedwagon's Hi infidelity), and me and my buddy's used to play tennis rackets to this whole album, over and over again in my friends' basements, as if we were in the band. So, needless to say...I am pretty familiar with this song. in fact I still have this album (it was the one that had the holographic kind of picture coating on the back side of the actual record that you could only see if you tilted the album under the light). I always loved this tune (all were great on this album) as it was rather spooky sounding...one of my favorite moods for music. So this was really enjoyable for me to check out. All guitarwork was great, particularly the lead parts (some great 70s/80s chops displayed here), although, SG has done his trademark turning his lead down too low because he is too modest of a guy to turn himself up . AS far as the vocals... yeah, JPF had that James Young sound going on. This could have easily fallen into the "Tom Jones on Meth" category, but JPF succeeded in keeping a harness on that otherwise tasty vibrato of his, which helped achieve the right sound for the vocals. Great job by both here. More styx please!

Ok, now I am listening to this again at home (i listened to it at work with my headphones on earlier today.....and perhpas I was a bit too distracted with the goings on in my office). This recording is much more interesting the second time around...especially through some decent speakers and a sub-woofer. This sounds way better on my home speakers. I can't believe I missed all the back-up and supporting vocal tracks earlier. I thought those were part of the MIDI file. Man, JPF...all those supporting vocals tracks sound really thick. How many do you have going in there??? Well-done!
This is very well mixed in my opinion. I still struggle with mixing. It is harder than one would imagine. On second listen, this lead section is pretty spot on and expressive. The volume is much better balanced in the mix than it sounded on my headphone. Upon second analysis, this recording is pretty damm top notch. A comment that I give sometimes to people who have posted a really well done cover is that I feel I could put this song on randomly at a party and either of two things would happen: either no one would notice that this was not from a store-bought CD or people would ask which already established band covered this tune. gotta save this one.

Thanks all so much, for the wonderful comments!!! Robbie did an incredible job on this one......track was kickin', and his playing and tone!!! , well......... . I know its not real true to the original, on my part anyway....had to put the harmonys in my range, but just tried to give them the same feel......by the way KC...just three..lead and two harm's. I don't know the original but this sounds really great. Love the guitar tones! John you are a harmony machine, great vocals bro'. Nice job! Mrs. SC says "awesome job guys!" and John she says you should sing some old Bad Company.
