Various VH song parts

Here's a clip i did with my Marshall Super Lead with only one tube in it. I did this to see how low i can go in volume without having to use any kind of attenuator. I took the chance out of curiousity I wouldn't recommend doing this. According to a few techs i've spoken to it may cause damage to your transformer. I figured i would just post this to let you hear the tone i got at such a low volume. I also used a Variac and lowered the voltage to around 90 volts just to play it safe. I was afraid the tube would start melting or something... Enjoy!

i'm not a real technical kinda guy when it comes to the electronics of an amp, but sounds like you got a real nice authentic tone going on there...

Man gss, that tone is extremely clean and crunchy. Talk about quality I would love to get a tone like that, I am going to have to invest into a real amp if I want that lol.

Sounds like great tone to me. Is that a 50 watt head with 2 total power amp tubes?

Thanks VHfan. It's a 100 watt head. I pulled three tubes and just left one in.

Re: Various VH song parts

Since I read this, I went over and pulled 2 (of the 4) tubes out of my 5150II head....sounds nice running at 60 watts....it has no real low end thump anymore, but has really nice tone at very low volumes. Mine is a class A/B power amp and I would guess it would not run with only one tube....yours might be a class A, in which case it would....and does since you did it.

I'll try and find a schematic of it and check....and I don't think it should hurt the power transformers as long as you keep the volume way down.

Guy!! Glad to see you're back! It's been a while since you've been to the site. Sounds like you've haven't lost that awesome tone, bro!

On a seperate note, I pulled the back panel off of my 5150 combo (where you access the tubes) and noticed that you can unplug the speakers from the head - that way when you're running your combo through the 4x12 cabinet you won't get interference from the Sheffield speakers.

Raven, thanks bro! Yeah, i noticed that plug a few weeks ago. That's pretty cool. I'll have to try that out. How is your amp setup sounding?

Good tone VHoholic! Be careful messing with the amp. I've heard of pulling two, but three? Might want to talk with one of the big wigs over there at HC forums and make sure that won't harm your amp. Is that the '70 or the RI?

Thanks J-mart! Yeah, i've asked a bunch of people about this one tube thing and i keep getting differing opinions so i'll have to see about it. Just a little experiment. For this clip i used my Plexi Reissue.
