Thanks for all your help. He ended up with an accoustic and will be getting an electric as well for Christmas. He has had three lessons. His instructor is teaching him the tab way I think. I've seen him looking on the internet for tab music and he's been plucking away at smoke on the water and soon other catchy tune. Haven't had to ask him to practice once!
