2001 Space Odysee
I just finished watching this movie for the first time (that I remember) and thought I would post the long and short of it if you want to save yourself three hours.
Opening scene 3 minutes of darkness with creepy music followed by 25 minutes of a bunch of angry bone toting monkeys, apparently signifying the dawn of mankind. The monkeys see a strange head stone type object, screech and wave their bones around some more
Flash forward to the present day (no segway) to a dude taking a trip to the moon, another 20 minutes of space travel with zero dialogue and more creepy music.
Before he makes it to the moon he takes a pit stop at a space station to make a call and talk to some doctors. Another 20 minutes to get to the moon where he has a conference with some other dudes about a weird thing they found buried on the moon.
They go to check out and it's that same head stone thingy! It makes a funky noise and they all grab their ears through their space suits, which I am sure helped muffle the sound.
Bam! No segway, it's 18 months later and they are off to Jupiter, with at least two or three 20 minute space scenes. HAL goes nuts and kills all the crew except for Dave. Dave get's pissed and starts pulling out HAL's memory cards and stuff. Hal is begging for Dave in this slow, dying, creepy deep voice to stop but Dave had enough of HAL and yanked his last chip.
20 more minutes of Dave in the shuttle flying through a bunch of worm holes in polarized film, the 5 minute eyeball shots were particularly exciting!
He arrives in a creepy white room where he ages rapidly, in fact so rapidly that he ends up in a womb.
The End.

Hahahah. Yeah, that film was definately not one of Kubrick's finest moments. The only cool part of that movie is the 5 minute creepy eyeball shots with that weird music (and still, you have to be drunk to enjoy that!). Good thing he more than made up for that piece of crap movie with A Clockwork Orange.

I'm pretty sure I've got a good grasp as to the meaning of the movie. Well, actually, that ending confuses the crap out of me as it seems rather contradictory and seemingly has nothing to do with the rest of the movie (insomuch as the movie is all about the evolution of humanity). However, I don't think the problem with the movie is that its meanings are too obscure or too deep, the problem with the movie imho is that it is boring as hell.
Lol, come on, 5 minutes of eye shots, 10 minutes of some guy walking on a space ship (although the Strauss is rather nice), 5 minutes of Sarengheti shots without a lick of dialogue, etc..etc.... I dunno, call me ADD, but the movie just can't hold my interest. Not like Clockwork Orange MMMmmmm.

Hmmm, you guys are just watching this movie too sober. What you need is to get really out of it on whatever your choice of poison.
Then re-watch the movie again and enjoy it and understand it on a whole different level !!!
You bunch of bloody teetotal non-stoners !!!

Well, no matter what you think of the movie, on a loosely connected note, my mate changed all my sound settings on Windows so that whenever there was an error or imprtant event, the sound file was HAL saying, "I'm sorry, Dave, but I can't do that !"
Freaked the hell out of me the first time it did it as my name is actually Dave and it seemed the AI of Windows had suddenly gone through the roof !!!
He also changed my Windows Start Up to a really loud belch and turned the voluem up full whack and I powered up in the middle of an open plan office, but that's getting completely off topic.
Good film, creepy sound clips...

I watched this movie along time ago. Watched it the other day also, not very impressed i might say. I just cant believe that You (Eric) left out the 20 minute intermission with creepy music to a black screen that reads, Intermission. The best part of this movie is when Dave pulled Hals chips with Hal begging him to stop!
