Favorite MOB movie of all time thread
I hope this hasn't been done to death but...
What is your favorite Mob movie of all time? Second? Third?
I've always been fascinated with the mafia especially the Sicilian crime familes. I don't condone crime or killing of any kind yet its so interesting to me.
The Godfather Trilogy movies are the best in my opinion so much its hard to pick which one is best since they all offer so much to the story.
Goodfellas comes in a close 4th as my fav, and Reservior Dogs in 5th.

Good movie too, Kevin Costner and Sean Connery are great in that movie. Have you seen the Bruce Willis movie "Last man Standing" about 1930's mafia? That was great also if you like the old mob.
I know there have been many threads about mob movies but haven't seen an actual poll and I'm curious to see which movie wins. I hope I get some response.

I'm betting the Godfather sagas will win.
Have you noticed that Raging Bull has most of the Goodfellas/Casino actors in it. Those guys were just born to play mobsters.

basically anything with De Niro in is normally good enough for me to enthuse about for a decade. He is by far the best living actor imho. He is coasting these days but I doubt anyone will ever match his finest works Godfather Part II, Meanstreets, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, New York New York, King Of Comedy and Midnight Run come to mind at the moment. He also deliberately took parts to challenge himself. This often ended up with him taking the difficult co-star role (Angel Heart, The Untouchables, True Confessions to name a few) but De Niro is IMHO the best actor to have ever graced this planet - the sheer effort he puts into his characters and even the physical changes he is prepared to go through show just how much acting means to him.
Brando is right up there with him too. But brando was lazy. He had immense talent and presence, but suffered from lack of motivation. His best films; On the Waterfront, The Men, Godfather, One Eyed Jacks are true showcase material - a Method actor breaking boundaries and redefining the movies in the process. But his bad films are more numerous than his good ones.
Anyhow - waffle mode off. My favourite gangster film on this list (In the Absence of Meanstreets and On the Waterfront) is Donnie Brasco. This is 2 extremely gifted actors both giving their all for the film. Depp is superb and Pacino displays some beautifully slob poses complete with gut bulging out and general world weary realisation. Jack Nicholson got the oscar for As Good As It Gets iirc but both Depp and Pacino completely outclass him in Donnie Brasco - They was robbed!

I agree with every damn thing you just said porty. DeNiro is amazing in everything he does. Depp really impressed me with the Brasco role and of course Pacino is, also one of the best actors on the planet.
You know that Brando never learned any lines for the Godfather. He read from cue cards during the entire film. He's cool, he doesn't need to memorize a frickin' thing.

So tough to beat that one. Can't think of anything that does.
I don't hear much feedback about part 3 but man I liked that movie alot too. Great continuation of the story. It was cool to see how much older they all were, the kids grown up and how about Sofia Coppola as Mike's daughter? She was 10 kinds of fine, i got a boner everytime she appeared. I lalso really liked Vincent's character and the scene where he whacks Joey Zasa. "ZA-ZA"!!

many of these are stone cold classics. thats for sure. But when it comes to choosing one you need really look no further than the top of the poll list.
The Godfather is (in my mind) the ULTIMATE in gangster/mob movies. VERY strong characters. great cinematogrphy. all round work of genius. a masterpeice of epic and brilliant proportions.
where many others seem to rely on violence to give them that extra X Factor of appeal. The Godfather (1) is carried by a huge variety of AWESOME acting performances and plotlines.
Marlon Brando is THE definitive don... and Al Pacino taking over... come on... this thing is destined to forever remain the definitive. the top dog. the number 1 gangster/mob movie of all time.

I love to be different
The godfather is a classic film, genre defining even, there is no doubt about that. But I honestly feel De Niro's performance in the sequal as the young Don Vito Corleone eclipses Brando's in the first. I actually believe it is a better film too - possibly the only time a sequel has exceeded the original imho. Pacinos coming of age is a joy to watch too. The transition from likeable kid brother into a ruthless mafia boss is handled brilliantly. My favourite moment is when kay comes to visit the kids after the split. The look and then closing the door on her is one of the coldest things I have seen in a film
Yet I still prefer Donnie Brasco as a film. Simply because you can see how the performances of the cast have elevated the film past the original expectations of the writer/director. The only downside is Michael Madsen for me - when is he going to stop playing the same mean and moody guy ... its so lazy! anyhow I still think this films is more honest and true to the real mob (based on a true story - although that means little these days) and I hope this will be considered to be the classic it is in years to come.
Anyhow - not looking for a punch up and I respect your opinions here DB

Joey...(boom)..ZA-ZA...(boom)
great scene...I agree, I loved all 3 films. Part 3 was great in its own right. I would have welcomed a Part 4 with Vincent running things and Aunt Connie at his side. They could have done it easily.
