Superman Returns

Superman Finds His Lois?
From Blue Crush to blue tights.
Source: IGN

January 03, 2005 - According to Superman-V.com, Kate Bosworth (Beyond the Sea) has been cast as Lois Lane in the new Superman movie. "After many young actresses screentested alongside Brandon Routh – with Elisha Cuthbert, Claire Danes and Keri Russell all believed to have come close it was Bosworth who [director Bryan] Singer decided on," Superman-V.com reports.

The site claims the cast includes Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor and Shawn Ashmore (Iceman in the X-Men films) as Jimmy Olsen. The only actor officially cast is Brandon Routh in the title role.

They add that Jude Law is rumored to be joining the cast as a villain (perhaps as General Zod) but that fans should take the rumors with "a rather large pinch" of proverbial salt.

Superman begins filming this March in Australia.

Bosworth & Spacey Aboard Superman
Source: ComingSoon!
Kate Bosworth is in talks to play Lois Lane, and Kevin Spacey is set to play nemesis Lex Luthor in Bryan Singer's Superman for Warner Bros. Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The comic book movie would reunite the two actors, who currently appear in Spacey's Beyond the Sea as Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin.

The casting of Lane was a long process that ultimately rested on a chemistry test between the actress and Brandon Routh, who is playing Superman, says the trade. Bosworth reportedly beat out the likes of Claire Danes, Linda Cardellini, and Michelle Monaghan.

Spacey, who is in rehearsals for "National Anthems" at the Old Vic, will do a limited run of "The Philadelphia Story" at the theater before moving to the Superman movie, which has a March 3 start date at Fox Studios Sydney.

Singer also told Variety that he and his writers chose a track that falls somewhere between the original film and the successful series Smallville.

"It's a little like 'X-Men,' where the mutants existed when the movie began," Singer said. "It's not an origin story; I didn't want to remake what Richard Donner did so well in the original, and didn't want to tread on the great work they're doing on 'Smallville.' He's already part of the culture; he has left the planet. This is the story of his return."

Is This The New Superman Costume?
Plus, Kevin Spacey drops a few hints.
Source: IGN

January 11, 2005 - Superman-V has posted some details about the new costume being designed for Superman. The site claims the suit is "a faithful rendition of the traditional suit with the classic S symbol. Expect to see similar colours and materials to the Spider-Man suit. It is rumoured to have a smallish raised S and high neckline. The yellow has been changed to a gold colour."

They add that, although Routh is lifting weights for the title role, "the suit will have some Muscle shading to emphasise muscle definition. Routh will also be wearing lenses to make his dark brown eyes blue."

In other news, Kevin Spacey, who was recently cast as Lex Luthor, spoke with The IESB about the project. "I think that it will resemble (the Christopher Reeve) films but at the same time it won't. From what I have been told fans of the first films will recognize plenty but this film will also stand alone."

Spacey also complimented his co-star Routh. "He, like [director Bryan] Singer, is a huge fan of this franchise. He has so much respect for the character and also so much passion. I could not see anyone else right now as Superman. Fans won't be disappointed."

Superman begins filming this March in Australia.

Marsden & Laurie Aboard Singer's Superman
Source: ComingSoon!
Director Bryan Singer has cast James Marsden, who played Cyclops in Singer's two "X-Men" movies, and Hugh Laurie, who stars in the Singer-executive produced Fox series House, in Warner Bros. Pictures' Superman.

The Hollywood Reporter says Marsden will play Lois Lane's love interest, Richard White. Laurie is in final talks to play Perry White, editor in chief of the Daily Planet. The two characters are related, though the studio declined comment on if they are father and son.

Brandon Routh is set to play Clark Kent/Superman, while Kevin Spacey, who won a supporting actor Oscar for his performance in Singer's The Usual Suspects, is set to play Lex Luthor. Kate Bosworth is in negotiations to play Lois Lane.

Gabriel Byrne as Jor-El?
Posted on Fri, 14-Jan-2005
Source: Moviehole

The always-busy Gabriel Byrne is said to be a favourite to take on the role of Superman's Pop in the new retool, says Superman-V.com.

If Byrne ["Enemy of the State", "The Assassin"] nabs the role of Jor-El, Clark's Kryptonian Papa, it would see him re-team with Bryan Singer, who directed him in "The Usual Suspects".

Marlon Brando played the role in Dick Donner's original.

Meanwhile, Terence Stamp, the original General Zod, told Latino Review that he'd be keen to reprise his role for the rework - as rumoured. If Jude Law gets the nod to take over the role, which also has been mooted, he'd be happy with that too. "If Jude Law played Zod, I’m sure he’d do great. He could be “Son of Zod,” couldn’t he? Unless it was a kind of prequel".

Man of steel's country retreat in AUSTRALIA?

A farm outside of Tamworth (North West New South Wales....about 7 hours from Sydney) will serve as the Kent family home in the latest Superman movie.

The property, 45 km from Tamworth, will become the Kansas family home where young Clark Kent grew up before taking on his Superman identity.

"It's early days yet, but I can say a property in that area is being transformed into the Kent farm for the film," a spokesman for US film house Warner Bros told the Northern Daily Leader newspaper.

"Production isn't due to start on the film for another two months, but the sets have already been built and are awaiting to be erected on the site.

"We chose the Breeza Plains area because of its picturesque location."

Production for the film will be based out of Sydney's Fox Studio's with a number of locations around NSW being used.

Little known US actor Brandon Routh will don the cloak of the "man of steel" in the latest Hollywood revival of Superman.

The 25-year-old was signed to star in the reincarnation of Superman, due to hit screens in 2006, following an exhaustive search for an actor to fill the role made famous by Christopher Reeve, who died last year.

The Warner Bros movie will be directed by Bryan Singer, who also made the hit comic book hero X-Men movies.

The first two films told the story of Superman's arrival as a baby after his father, Jor-El from the planet Krypton, sent his son to planet Earth before Krypton exploded.

The young man is raised in Kansas by Martha and Jonathan Kent who name the boy Clark, taking Martha's maiden name.

Clark grows up and moves to the city of Metropolis, where he becomes a reporter and falls in love with Lois Lane.

Superman Returns will pick up where the first two films left off, with Superman returning to Earth after having been missing for six years.

In his absence, the forces of evil have regrouped like never before.

Even Lex Luthor, who will be played by actor Kevin Spacey, has risen to the heights of power in Metropolis.

And when an old enemy from Krypton reappears, Superman must fight his never-ending battle like never before, amidst a world that has forgotten what it's like to have a hero.

Construction has begun on the Breeza property to build the set of the Kent farmhouse.

Here is a just a glimpse of the lovely town..

Has Superman's old man been cast?
Source: Moviehole

Krytponsite may have discovered who's playing Superman's Pop in Bryan Singer's redo.

According to the site, Michael Gambon ["Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"] will be playing the role of Jor-El, Kal-El's Kryptonian nappy-changer.

The site also stumbled upon a synopsis for the film, but it sounds like it's the Kevin Smith's take on the pic from a few years back : "From Bryan Singer, director of the X-Men films, comes a new chapter in the Superman saga. Metropolis' villainous Lex Luthor (Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey - American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) allies himself with a malevolent alien, a demonic brainiac from Krypton, who's out to kill Superman. Superman is overmatched and dies . . . until he's resurrected by an ally from Krypton. Thanks to the love he shares with Lois Lane, he's given his super strength back in the action-filled thriller Superman Returns".

Saint is Martha Kent in Superman
Source: ComingSoon!

Because of Winn-Dixie star Eva Marie Saint will play Martha Kent, the adoptive mother of Clark Kent/Superman (Brandon Routh) in Bryan Singer's Superman for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Saint, who starred in the Alfred Hitchcock classic North by Northwest, will also appear in Wim Wenders' Don't Come Knocking, to be released by Sony Pictures Classics in the fall.

"X-Men 3" & "Superman" Casting Conflicts
Source: DarkHorizons

In his latest column for MSN, the handsomely mysterious Greg Ellwood that according to his sources, 20th Century Fox nixed the idea of up-and-coming actor Shawn Ashmore starring in Warner Bros' new "Superman" feature. Fox is telling actors who have options for the third, untitled "X-Men" film that it will begin shooting June 20th. That conflicts with "Superman Returns'" spring shooting schedule, which is anticipated to go through July 30.

Ashmore is one of the few actors in the X-Men franchise that is contractually obligated to two sequels. The other actors locked in include Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Aaron Stanford (Pyro), Anna Paquin (Rogue) and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique). Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) has agreed to a new contract for the movie and has approval on the new director for the series. James Marsden has already been removed from consideration as Cyclops after he took a smaller part as Perry White's son in "Superman Returns."

Ian McKellen (Magneto), Patrick Stewart (Professor X) and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) are all expected to return for the right price. A director and final writer has yet to be locked in.

Superman Casting Rumor Update
Source: AICN

Scooper 'Rich' sent us this scoop, which we can't confirm at this time. We can tell you that 'Rich' was the first one to tell us that Kal Penn is actually Luthor's right-hand man, which at first contradicted reports that said he was playing Superman's best friend, but now turns out to be true. If the rest is accurate, there's some big names still to be officially announced for Warner Bros.' Superman:
I have some exclusive casting news on Superman Returns. Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, Van Wilder) has indeed signed on, as a earring wearing, tattooed punk that serves as Luthor's right hand man.
Famke Janssen's (X-Men 1 & 2, Goldeneye) meeting with director Bryan Singer down under was for Superman Returns, and she has snagged the role of Lora, the birth mother of The Man Of Steel, while Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs Of New York, The Last Of The Mohicans) has gotten the role of his birth father, Jor-El.
As for the other villians, Jude Law (Cold Mountain, Gattaca) has finally signed on as General Zod, and Kevin Bacon (Mystic River, Apollo 13) has signed as John Corbin.
Finally, Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile) has gotten the role of a reporter at the Daily Planet, who becomes Clarke's rival after his return. Expect WB to make these casting bits official in about a week.

Original Lois Lane returns for Superman
Posted on Fri, 11-Feb-2005
Source: Moviehole
Noel Neill, the original 'Lois Lane' from "The Adventures of Superman", is returning to her beloved Metropolis.

The veteran actress has agreed to make an appearance - playing a "small but important" part - in Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns", according to Superman-v.com.

Neill also had a cameo in the original "Superman" movie, playing Lois Lane's mother.

Meantime, the same site reports on some of the effects being used for the large-scale pic, adding that the film may well shoot some additional photography in L.A after the Aussie stayover.
