The Passion Of The Christ ?
FH, I went through some of the posts, but couldn't find a mention of this film anywhere recent.
Anyhoo, I went to see this last night. What a great film ! A very powerful story, told, in my opinion anyway, in a very accurate and careful way.
I liked the attention to detail. Things like the breaking of their legs to make sure they die when being Crucified. What I particularly liked was the fact that we use so many phrases from this story as metaphors ("They'll crucify him !", "Judas !", etc.), and we hear the fact that Jesus was nailed to a cross every Easter, that the meaning and power has gotten lost. But when you actually see this on screen happening to you, let me tell you, the images are really powerful.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this film, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't like gory films, or anyone who isn't really up on the whole story.
I was brought up in a whole Christian environment, so am fairly well up on the story, so I enjoyed the story being told.
I will definitely get this when it comes out on DVD.

Re: The Passion Of The Christ ?
I saw it myself, but never really posted much about it. If I had to complain about it, I'd have to say I wish it had started from like The Last Supper onward instead of his final 12 hours. Or maybe even earlier. The whole walk with the crucifix was annoyingly over-long but it was a good movie overall.

Re: The Passion Of The Christ ?
Hi, I think the flashbacks cover any necessary information. However, the film does assume that you do know a lot about the story up to the Last Supper. As I do, it was OK for the film to make that assumption. I can understand where you are coming from though. It's straight in at the betrayal scene.
The carrying of the cross was another powerful image to me. You see, the metaphor, "Cross to bear", that's used so many times. I think the fact that it is a long scene and that he's just been beaten to within an inch of his life, emphasises just how agonising it must have been.
Although I personally didn't notice that that scene was particularly long. However, I was gripped throughout it (apart from the numerous times were I flinched or grimaced at what I was seeing).

Re: The Passion Of The Christ ?
To me it was exactly like Jesus Christ Superstar , except all the gory parts (for which i didnt really care about), and the lack of cool music which i really missed while seeing the movie since i saw JCS first . I actually took my guitar while watching the whipping scene and started playing the evil riff from JCS to make it more interesting , otherwise i found the movie pretty boring.
OH and check this out !

Re: The Passion Of The Christ ?
Another reason I liked it dude. It wasn't packaged up to be anything other than the story.
I haven't seen Jesus Christ Superstar though, so I can't make a comparison.

I thought it was very accurate. Really makes you think about the sacrifice He made for us.

Re: The Passion Of The Christ ?
Prolly one of the most intense movies I have ever seen. I went to a Jesuit prep school so, to me, it was a very accurate portrayal of the final hours of His life. Knowing all the stories and having gone to Sunday school as a child, I donut really understand how anyone can be offended by this movie, Jews in particular. There was nothing "thrown in" to this film that I wasn't already taught (or any other person of Christian faith, regardless of denomination). Anyway, I donut want to get into this subject. Just wanted to say that the movie was incredible and that Mel Gibson should get an oscar for it...although he prolly has a better chance of catching diphtheria.

Re: The Passion Of The Christ ?
I saw this movie and thought it was moving. Definitely thought provoking in the terms of the world today. I expected to get very emotional, but I didn't. I kept thinking to myself, "this was done for me...it was supposed to happen this way." I think that comforted me in a way.
I was a little disappointed in that I had hoped for a little more of the story before the crucifixion, but I guess that was done on purpose to get the focus on the sacrifice. I hope it reminds more people that Easter isn't about cute bunnies.

Re: The Passion Of The Christ ?
All I keep hearing about it is that there is two straight hours of torture and mutilation. Not that it isn't a great movie but I have absolutely no desire to see that, regardless of what it's about.

Re: The Passion Of The Christ ?
Hey eric,
That's pretty much it in a nutshell, because that's what happened.
That's why it's so accurate. Like I say, not glossed up to be anything it's not.

Re: The Passion Of The Christ ?
I think that's what's shocked most of the world. But how do you portray images of being nailed to a cross and whipped and beaten up, without violence and bloodshed ?
Like I say, somewhere along the line, the imagery and power of the Easter story got lost in chocolate and fluffy bunnies...
