Weekly Entertainment & Movie News

Toy Story 3 Most Likely Going to the Big Screen
Source: Coming Soon

Reuters reports that Walt Disney Studios chief Dick Cook on Friday said he is leaning toward making Toy Story 3 a feature film instead of going straight-to-video.

"My hunch is big screen," Cook told Reuters. But he said that no decision had been made and that the movie was a few years or more away. "We are nowhere on it right now," he added.

While Disney and Pixar, who created both "Toy Story" films, will part ways after two more films (The Incredibles and Cars), Disney retains the rights to make sequels to the films they have produced.

"I think it deserves it. These are two of the most beloved characters in the last generation. Buzz and Woody are fantastic characters, and I think that is something that would fit on the big screen nicely."

Typhoid Mary is the Elektra Villainess
Source: Coming Soon
USA Today spoke to both Elektra star Jennifer Garner and producer Gary Foster about the villain. Garner says she will have "a female foil" in the Daredevil spin-off set to film in May. "I'm getting ready to train to battle Typhoid Mary," she says.

Foster, who with co-producer Avi Arad helped choose the supervillain, says, "Typhoid Mary is a psychotic. By day she's this normal woman, and at night she loses her mind and drives you into this disease, where you literally get typhoid."

In the comics, Typhoid Mary was born with multiple personality disorder, giving her two distinct personalities. Mary is quiet, but Typhoid is a psychotic seductress bent on dominating men by implanting suggestions into their minds.

Stuart Beattie Rewriting Indiana Jones 4?
Source: Coming Soon
Moviehole tells us they've received word that Stuart Beattie is rewriting Frank Darabont's draft of the Indiana Jones 4 script.

Australian screenwriter Stuart Beattie has been hired to rework the fourth "Indiana Jones" movie.

According to loyal scooper 'Accountant', The "Pirates of the Caribbean" writer - he penned the screen story - was hired by Lucasfilm pretty much based on the success of that film.

He's currently at work on a re-write of the newest script, with suggestions the film still might be ready for a release sometime in 2005.

Beattie co-wrote the upcoming Tom Cruise starrer, Collateral, and he's also adapting Derailed, the James Siegel novel, for Miramax Films.

Chuck Wilson Writing & Directing Mo'Fockers
Source: Coming Soon
Soul Plane screenwriter Chuck Wilson will write Meet the Mo'Fockers for Maverick Entertainment, based on a story he created with actor-comedian DeRay Davis. The comedy will also be Wilson's feature-directing bow, says Variety.

In the script, a high-society African-American man falls in love with a beautiful woman whom he believes possesses a social pedigree similar to his own. As he prepares to ask for her hand in marriage, he discovers his would-be in-laws are straight from the 'hood -- and that he had a one-night stand with the woman's mother.

The film is also expected to spoof familiar nuptial comedies such as The Wedding Planner and The Wedding Singer.

Rhythm & Hues Bringing Narnia F/X to Life
Source: Coming Soon

Rhythm & Hues has landed the role as lead special effects studio on Walt Disney Studios and Walden Media fantasy epic The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which Disney will distribute late next year.

Variety reports that R&H is expected to create more than 700 shots for the film, which will start lensing this summer in New Zealand, with "Shrek" series director Andrew Adamson from a script by Ann Peacock.

The effects studio has built a name for itself in creating digital characters, most recently for such films as Fox's Daredevil, Warner Bros.' Scooby-Doo and its sequel and Universal's Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat. Its work will next be seen in Fox's upcoming Garfield and Universal's The Chronicles of Riddick.

For "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," R&H will create matte paintings, as well as bring to life a cast of creatures from the C.S. Lewis children's classic as photo-realistic computer-generated characters, including Aslan, a talking lion.

David Duchovny Talks The X-Files 2
Source: Coming Soon
Moviehole tells us that David Duchovny talked about a second "X-Files" movie while he was promoting Connie and Carla. "It's definitely happening", the actor said. "Chris has a great idea for the new movie and I expect we'll be able to begin shooting in the next year or so."

He hopes Mulder doesn't develop further in the sequel. "I hope not. I was really fighting against that in the final years of the show. I think we're going to be introducing a new character in the film which will allow us to cast a major star, male or female, who will want to be part of an exciting supernatural thriller. I think the new movie will appeal to both our core fans and a broad audience. I'm very excited about it."

Hellboy Sequel Talk?
Source: Comics Continuum

Guillermo del Toro, director of the Hellboy movie, said that he and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola have already entertained thoughts of a sequel.

"Mike and I, when we were in Prague, we said, 'Well, what if that happens?,'" del toro said at last weekend's Wizard World Los Angeles. "Of course, we would need to come up with a good story, some good ideas. 'What about moving this over here and doing that?' Five minutes later, we were like, 'And, and, and...and...

"So we would be delighted. We would have floating heads in a jar. Lobster Johnson. Whatever madness we can do."

"Looking at the movie the other night, Guillermo came to me and said, 'Well, we have to make the second one crazier,'" Mignola said. "That's raising the bar right there. The one that's out there right now is pretty darn crazy. But I think he can do it."

New Family Guy Episodes Return in Early 2005
Source: Coming Soon
In an unprecedented move, 20th Century Fox Television has committed to producing a minimum of 22 new half-hour episodes of Seth MacFarlane's Emmy Award-winning animated comedy series Family Guy more than two years after the series aired its last original episode. The move comes on the heels of the series' elevation to pop culture phenomenon, particularly among the traditionally hard-to-reach young adult demographic, as demonstrated by its enormous success on DVD and on the Cartoon Network. In 2003, Family Guy was the #1 selling TV property on DVD. On Cartoon Network, Family Guy ranks #1 in its time period on cable among Adults and Men 18-34 and Adults and Men 18-24, and also beats both "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in head-to-head competition among Men 18-34 and Men 18-24.

The new episodes will be available in early 2005 to be shown on Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's late night block of animated programming for adults on which Family Guy currently ranks as the #1 show. The Fox Broadcasting Company has an option to license the original runs of those new episodes.

Seth MacFarlane, creator and executive producer of Family Guy and two-time Emmy Award winner for his work on the series, and producer Kara Vallow are currently assembling the writing and production staff for the new episodes.

"This is incredibly exciting for everyone at Fox," enthused 20th Century Fox TV President Gary Newman. "The overwhelming response to 'Family Guy' this past year is a real tribute to Seth's vision and talent and it's been really gratifying to all the executives who never stopped championing him and the show. The fact that after all this time we were able figure out a way to get back into production is a testament both to Seth's passion for keeping it alive and some really great teamwork among the executives at our studio and home entertainment and syndication divisions and those at Turner and the Cartoon Network. We're thrilled for Seth, we're thrilled for his fans, and to be honest we're thrilled for our teenage kids who threatened to emancipate themselves if we didn't figure out a way to bring the show back."

Commented Seth MacFarlane, "I'm just incredibly excited that we're back in business on 'Family Guy'. Now all those crazy kids who've been hounding me to bring the show back can stop bothering me and move onto more serious matters - like saving 'Coupling.' "

Family Guy chronicles the lives of the Griffin family, a tight-knit but tense nuclear family living in Quahog, Rhode Island. Peter, the loving but not-overly-ambitious patriarch, and Lois, his devoted wife, maintain a comfortable middle class home. Teen queen Meg, slacker Chris and homicidal infant Stewie round out the Griffin brood, but the most sensible and well-spoken member of the clan is the family dog, Brian. Family Guy had its series preview on FOX on January 31, 1999 following the Super Bowl and its series premiere on April 11, 1999. It earned an Emmy Award in 2000 for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance (Seth MacFarlane) and an Emmy Award in 2002 for Outstanding Music & Lyrics (Walter Murphy and Seth MacFarlane) and was nominated for Outstanding Animated Series in 2000. The final original episode aired February 14, 2002. Family Guy joined Cartoon Network's Adult Swim on Sunday, April 20, 2003 and immediately became the block's top-rated programming, dominating late night viewing in its time period vs. cable and broadcast competition.

"Bringing 'Family Guy' to the Adult Swim lineup last April really helped turn the block into a cultural phenomenon with young adults," said Jim Samples, Cartoon Network executive vice president and general manager. "Now, as the destination for new episodes of what has become the block's most popular series, 'Family Guy' will help boost Adult Swim to the next level in terms of buzz and ratings. We could not be more excited to have Seth and 20th Century Fox Television on board as Adult Swim continues its growth as the best place on TV for young adults."

Wham! Musical In the Works?
Source:E!

By Josh Grossberg

How's this for a careless whisper?

George Michael has revealed that he is considering offers to mount a stage musical about his go-go days in Wham!, one of the '80s most successful English pop duos.

"Two or three producers have approached Andrew Ridgeley and I," the 40-year-old singer confirmed to London radio station Heart 106.2FM.

While Michael acknowledged that Ridgeley--his ex-mate in Wham!--has some faith in the idea of leg warmers, big hair and the group's cheery music making it on the West End or Broadway for that matter, he says it's still difficult for him to listen without prejudice.

"On another level, I know a certain generation of people would love the idea. But I would literally have to avoid the premiere," he said. "The truth is that done on stage, there'll be no charm and you'll be left with a lot of cheese.

Michael then added: "I think Andrew was of the opinion that if the story was good enough, then it would be snotty not to do it. He would love the fact that it would make a fortune as well."

A Wham! musical certainly isn't the first time a famous popster's catalogue has been mined for the stage.

The success of ABBA's Mamma Mia, which built a story around the Swedish group's indelible disco hits, spawned a host of imitators including Queen's We Will Rock You and Billy Joel 's Movin' Out, which has been packing them in along the Great White Way.

Michael--who reportedly refused to see We Will Rock You because he said "he was too much of a fan" of Queen, is smart to be skeptical, considering audiences may soon tire of the trend, if they haven't already.

Case in point: Taboo, a musical featuring tunes from '80s popster Boy George, which was brought over last year from London to Broadway by Rosie O'Donnell, but closed in January after three months following mostly negative reviews and lackluster ticket sales.

Wham!, whose most famous hits Stateside include "Careless Whisper" and "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go," broke up in 1986.

Perhaps it's not surprising then that Ridgeley is pushing for the musical. While Michael went on to record his chart-topping solo debut Faith and became an international superstar, his partner's solo career went nowhere.

Earlier this month, Michael announced plans to quit the mainstream music biz by releasing his music via the Internet and donating the proceeds to charity.

Jack Black Takes on Jackson's King Kong!
Source: Coming Soon

Envy star Jack Black has been in cast alongside Naomi Watts in Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong. Black will play Carl Denham, an adventurer filmmaker who is trying to make a name for himself in 1930s New York. Robert Armstrong played the role in the 1933 original.

Watts is playing Ann Darrow, an American actress who makes a living performing in Broadway song and dance shows. The project, which will shoot in Jackson's native New Zealand, is set up at Universal Pictures.

"I've been wanting to work with Jack Black ever since I saw him in High Fidelity," said Jackson, who is also writing the remake along with his "Lord of the Rings" co-screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. "He's a smart and versatile actor blessed with an abundance of energy and charm and I'm absolutely thrilled that he is joining us on 'Kong."'

Keanu Reeves Starring in A Scanner Darkly
Source: Coming Soon

Keanu Reeves will star in A Scanner Darkly for Warner Independent Pictures, with School of Rock helmer Richard Linklater in talks to direct, reports Variety. Linklater wrote the most recent draft of the script.

George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh's Section 8 will produce the film, an adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel. A Scanner Darkly will employ the same technology Linklater used in Waking Life. It will be shot live-action, then animated.

The story takes place in the future, where undercover agents change their faces along with their identities. Reeves plays one such officer, and his liberal ingestion of the drug Substance D causes him to develop a split personality.

Warner Independent is preparing the film for a May start.

Michael Brandt & Derek Haas Adapting Wanted
Source: Superhero Hype
Variety reports that Universal Pictures is in talks with "2 Fast 2 Furious" writing duo Michael Brandt and Derek Haas to adapt the recently acquired comic book property Wanted.

Earlier this month, Marc Platt Productions bought rights to Mark Millar's dark tale about an angry young man who discovers that he's the son of the most powerful supervillain on Earth. Didn't Seth Green play this in the Austin Powers' movies already?

The writers are also developing a remake of "An Honest Tradesman" for Focus Features. They will pen the adaptation of the Belgian cop tale, with Haas set to direct and Brandt to produce.
