Weekly Entertainment & Movie News

Marvelous Fourth for Spidey 2
Source: E!
Spider-Man 2, as expected, provided plenty of box-office fireworks over the Independence Day weekend, spinning up $115.8 million from Friday to Monday, according to initial estimates.

The return of Toby Maguire as the sticky crusader set a three-day record for the Fourth of July with $88.3 million, beating Men in Black 2's $52.1 million from Friday to Sunday in 2002.

Spidey's web extended to a whopping 4,152 sites (just shy of Shrek 2's record opening in 4,163 multiplexes in May), where the superhero sequel averaged $27,890 and accounted for more than 55 percent of all weekend ticket sales.

"We are elated," said Avi Arad, chairman of Marvel Studios and coproducer of the PG-13 Sony movie.

He said the result validated the studios' belief that the sequel--in which neurotic Peter Parker still pursues Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) while his bold alter-ego confronts the extraneously armed baddie Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina)--is a better movie than the original.

"For Marvel sequels have been very successful...but listen, Spider-Man is very special and the last movie did so well that you cannot not be nervous or take anything for granted. All you can do is try to make a great movie and hope people will respond and it couldn't have been better."

With no other wide releases willing to tangle with your friendly neighborhood arachnid, Spider-Man 2 chalked up several other milestones. The flick, which debuted with a record $44.8 million in ticket sales Wednesday, now holds the mark for best six-day opening, beating The Matrix Reloaded's loaded $145.9 million last summer, and easily passing the $144.1 million snared by the original Spider-Man in 2002.

Sunday when barbecuing and fireworks obsess the nation, was, as expected, the weakest day for Spider-Man 2. But as Rory Bruer, Sony's president of distribution said, "I cannot complain about $22 million!" By Monday, the revised figures had the haul back up to $27.5 million, closer to Saturday's $33.8 million, but not in the league of the spectacular $44.8 million opening Wednesday. The film is already close to profitable (it cost around $200 million to produce and market), and Spider-Man 3 is already in the pipeline.

While Spidey was slinging into the record books, last week's chart-bursting number one, Fahrenheit 9/11, wasn't left completely out in the cold.

Michael Moore's controversial Bush-bashing documentary dropped only a modest 31 percent from its surprise victory last week, earning $21 million after expanding to 1,725 theaters, about twice as many as its opening weekend but still fewer than any other films in the top 10.

The R-rated Lions Gate and IFC Films release, which is stirring political passions in this election year, was the choice of slightly more than10 percent of the paying public and averaged $12,174 per site, excellent for a documentary.

Overall the top 12 films grossed an estimated $158.4 million from Friday to Sunday, according to Exhibitor Relations, topping the three-day July 4 weekend record of $139 million set in 2002. With Monday factored in, the total was $208.9 million.

Box office was up 25 percent over this time last year, and 14 percent from last weekend. Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations, notes a continuing "positive" mood among theatergoers this summer that was jump-started by the success of Shrek 2, now the fifth highest grosser of all time after seven weeks in theaters.

Tom Ortenberg, president of distribution for Lions Gate, was also elated. "It's a phenomenon...It's playing well to all demographics," he said, noting more theaters will be added this week. "I think Michael Moore's voice is resonating across America, quite frankly, despite efforts by some to smear him and the film."

Fahrenheit 9/11 cost only about $6 million to produce and not much more to market. It has now earned $60.1 million, and seems likely to eventually surpass $100 million, totally surprising for a documentary. Iironically, a large portion of the profits will be earmarked for charities to be speicified by Disney, the company that dropped the hot potato of a film for political reasons.

Last week's other major player, the Wayans brothers' gender-bending comedy White Chicks, dropped one slot to number three this weekend, but a big 54 percent. It only grossed $12 million over the four days, from a per-site average of just $4,286.

Three films opened in limited release.

The most successful was De-Lovely, the Cole Porter biopic starring Kevin Kline as the famous songwriter and Ashley Judd as his wife. The PG-13 MGM release opened at just 15 sites, where it tallied $384,000 over four days from a $25,600 per-cinema average.

At 56 sites, The Clearing, an R-rated high-brow kidnapping thriller starring Robert Redford, Helen Mirren and Willem Dafoe from Fox Searchlight Pictures, cleared $647,098 for the entire holiday weekend, from a $11,555 per screen average .

At 98 sites, America's Heart and Soul, a PG-rated rah-rah-U.S.A. documentary that Disney had no problem releasing, earned just $173,000 during the nation's annual red, white and blue celebration from a barely there screen average of $1,765.

Final figures are due Tuesday. Three- and four-day estimates for the top 10 are as follows:

1. Spider-Man 2, $88.3 million; $115.8 million
2. Fahrenheit 9/11, $16.4 million, $21 million
3. White Chicks, $9.1 million; $12 million
4. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, $8 million; $10.4 million
5. The Notebook, $7.3 million; $10.3 million
6. The Terminal, $7.9 million; $10.2 million
7. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, $5.9 million; $8.1 million
8. Shrek 2, $5.8 million; $7.9 million
9. Garfield, $2.7 million; $3.6 million
10. Two Brothers, $2.6 million; $3.6 million

Washington Directing Sammy Davis Jr. Biopic
Source: Coming Soon!
Variety reports that Denzel Washington will direct the life story of entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have optioned screen rights to Wil Haygood's book "In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis Jr."

The film will be produced by Imagine's Brian Grazer and Washington, who is not planning to act in the film. The two are currently working together on the crime drama Tru Blu, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Washington and Benicio Del Toro.

Haygood will write the first draft of the script based on his sprawling book that traces Davis' career back to age 4, when he began singing and dancing with his father on the vaudeville circuit.

Washington made his directorial debut on Antoine Fisher. On the acting side, he is eyeing The Great Debators, at Miramax and the Alcon-based Brothers in Arms, a David Chisolm-scripted account of the all-black 761st tank battalion in World War II, based on a book by basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Anthony Walton.

Source: Coming Soon!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer Josh Heald and Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle writers-producers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg will develop All You Can Eat at New Line Cinema with.

The film is a broad comedy set in the world of eating contests. It's the second project Hurwitz and Schlossberg have set up at New Line as producers, following Open Bar.

That comedy project, which follows two friends who fulfill a lifelong dream of opening up a bar, also was written by Heald.

Paul and Daurio Writing 12 Days of Christmas
Source: Coming Soon!
Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio will write 12 Days of Christmas for Universal Pictures and producer Lauren Shuler Donner, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The project originally revolved around Santa's reindeer but now is being geared to focus more on Santa's origin. The trade adds that it is being eyed as a Christmas franchise for the studio.

Paul and Daurio previously teamed on the Christmas-themed The Santa Clause 2, starring Tim Allen, for Buena Vista Pictures. Their other credits include Bubble Boy, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and Planet Terry for New Line Cinema.

Batman Begins Teaser Trailer with I, Robot
Source: Superhero Hype!
Cinescape has learned that the first teaser trailer for Warner Bros.' Batman Begins will play in theaters with Will Smith's "I, Robot"...

We have seen the evidence ourselves that Warner Bros. has struck a deal with 20th Century Fox to ship the trailer for BATMAN BEGINS with prints of Fox's I, ROBOT to theaters across the continent. I, ROBOT will begin its theatrical run on July 16, and that will also be the same day that the trailer for BATMAN BEGINS will be seen. We have also been able to confirm the running time of the BATMAN trailer: it's one minute, five second in length.

Since "I, Robot" is not a Warner Bros. film, we don't expect the teaser trailer to be "attached," or playing with every copy of "I, Robot". Make sure you call the theater ahead of time to see if they will be showing the clip with their copy or copies.

Jessica Simpson Fights Ignorance
Source: DarkHorizons
The world's most famous ditzy blond of the moment, Jessica Simpson, is branching out from reality TV into other arenas. On top of her variety show (and failed sitcom), there's been talk for a while that she has been attached to a variety of comic book adaptations and old TV show turned modern movie reinventions. Now 'Jonesey54' updates the current status of those various projects from the local news outlets of Spokane, Washington:

"Jessica has some baseball-themed movie lined up first called "Walk-On." And shortly after she'll don the short jean shorts for the Dukes of Hazzard's role of Daisy Duke...but those casting rumors have been floating around the internet for quite some time.

What took me off guard as how our paper goes on to say how Jessica is possibly auditioning for a role as a superhero called Dazzler. The article goes on to say that producers where impressed with a small audition tape that the singer-actress sent them upon request, and will possibly give her a small role in the 3rd "X-Men" movie as a lounge-singer, to introduce the character of Dazzler, in hopes to extend the character's role in future films.

Anyway the rest of the article goes on about the role in the "I Dream of Jeannie" movie which she's still a run in for and has yet to be cast despite recent rumours of a signing. She faces deep competition from our favorite Mean Girl Lindsay Lohan and King Arthur's Keira Knightley for the role as well. Also the article states that a past project called Mort, The Dead Teenager" is officially dead and no longer in production nor starring Jessica anytime soon".

Pellington Directing Harrison Ford in Element
Source: Coming Soon!
The Hollywood Reporter says Arlington Road helmer Mark Pellington will direct the Harrison Ford thriller The Wrong Element for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow.

The story revolves around the kidnapping of the wife and daughter of a security expert (Ford), who is forced to steal a vast sum of money from a bank he's protecting in order to ransom his family. As his efforts come to the attention of law enforcement, he races to complete the illegal transfer of funds in time.

Joe Forte wrote the screenplay for the film.

New Resident Evil: Apocalypse Trailer Online!
Source: Coming Soon!
Yahoo! Movies has posted a first look at the new action-packed trailer for Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Apocalypse, opening September 10.

In the sequel, a deadly virus has been unleashed on the population of Raccoon City. Milla Jovovich returns as Alice, one of only two survivors of the contained biochemical disaster in the first film. The sequel begins where the first film left off, with Alice in the heart of the ravaged and deadly Raccoon City. She has been subjected to biogenetic experimentation by the vast Umbrella Corporation and become genetically altered, with super-human strengths, senses and dexterity. These skills, and more, will be needed if anyone is to remain alive.

Click here to view the trailer in either QuickTime or Windows Media format.

Guillermo del Toro on Hellboy Director's Cut & Sequel
Source: Superhero Hype!
Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro provided an update on the upcoming Director's Cut DVD and the sequel on the official message board...

Director's cut: I was hoping to have it released in Europe and Japan. As it turns out it will released theatrically only in France...

DVD (Director's cut): Comes out in November (3 discs) all the same extras (minus commntary track original) but with an extra disc full of features. The special box edition will have a SIDESHOW HELLBOY mini-bust. This disc has my preferred cut (15 extra mnutes but they go a loong way in terms of story and character) and a new commentary track that I feel very happy with.

SEQUEL: More on this later, but lemme say this: The storyline for it has been approved by Revolution and we are now clear to start the script.

Hit this link for more of what he said.

Ian McKellen Talks X-Men 3
Source: Superhero Hype!
Ian McKellen has an update on X-Men 3 in his latest Epost...

I hear positive news about the second sequel, which is likely to include Magneto. The start date, considering Bryan Singer's other commitments, couldn't be much before September 2005. There is as yet no script nor am I signed up. On the other hand Hugh Jackman had a three-movie deal and Alan Cumming is also contracted to appear once more.

Jesus getting a job at the Daily Planet?
Source: Moviehole
CNN – via Dark Horizons – is reporting that “Passion of the Christ” star Jim Caviezel might be Warners new choice to play Superman.

Ironically, Henry Cavill, who played Caviezel’s on-screen son in “The Count of Monte Cristo”, was the previous frontrunner, if the rumour mill is anything to go by.

It’s not the first time the talented thespian – who also starred in the recent “Bobby Jones” and “Highwaymen” - has been connected to the role of the man of steel, but assumingly the network has heard he might be more than just one of a zillion contenders, this time.

Last week, Warner announced, that despite the rumours that Michael Bay has taken over, McG is still very much attached the direct the picture.

Star Wars 3 Update
Source: DarkHorizons

A big update on the third "Star Wars" film today from the official site in recent days, including several things about CGI villain General Grievous (voiced by Gary Oldman):

"Though the extremely complicated CG model of him [Grievous] is finished and approved, his final painted form has yet to be rendered. The image of him that graces the cover of the latest official UK Star Wars fan magazine and the soon-to-be published official French magazine, which can be found in the current issue of Cinefex isn't a finished form. The long lead times of print publications required that image of Grievous to be completed over a month ago, and Grievous has continued to evolve since then. That image is actually a combination of an unfinished render with 2-D digital paint applied by Concept Artist Alex Jaeger.

Grievous has yet to make an appearance in a finished Episode III shot. That's not to say the computer-generated character isn't getting a workout. Already, animation of Grievous and Obi-Wan Kenobi engaged in a bare-knuckle brawl (if something with metallic fingers can be said to be bare-knuckled) is being developed and approved. Producer Rick McCallum says "There's still work left to do on him before we can add him to shots. It's not until we have a voice for him and can record a guide track for him next month that we can really start animating his character"."

Meanwhile the much-reported-on epic opening shot - OSB10 - was shown to George Lucas for approval the other week. The shot involves starfighters twisting between a pair of massive capital ships. OSB010 now joins dozens of other OSB shots already approved as the opening sequence of the movie shapes up. The Trade Federation vulture droids will be seen to turn, fold and transform on screen - a functionality incorporated into their design years ago for Episode I, but something we have yet to see on the big screen.
