"Dozen" Writers Aboard New Line's Shazam!

Cheaper by the Dozen writers Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow have been tapped for writing duties on New Line Cinema's adaptation of DC Comics' Shazam!.

The comic is the story of mild-mannered Billy Batson, a boy who becomes Captain Marvel, the world's mightiest mortal, when he says the magic word "Shazam!" The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles and speed of Mercury.

The DC comic ran in the 1970s and was actually a revival of the 1940s Fawcett Comics strip. William Goldman was previously working on the script.

Cannell on 21 Jump Street, The A-Team & Hero

IESB spoke to 80's TV producer Stephen K. Cannell who is promoting his new book "Vertical Coffin". He provided the site with an update on the big screen adaptations of The A-Team, The Greatest American Hero and 21 Jump Street. Here's clips from the article...

Greatest American Hero fans will rejoice to hear that Disney is moving forward with this project to create a feature film. Cannell has completed the story outline and writers have been hired to finish the first draft within the next few months. He stated he already has an actor in mind for the lead role of Ralph, but declined to say exactly who.

A feature film version of The A-team will be headed to theaters if Stephen's plan comes together. However, in order to modernize the plot, instead of four Vietnam vets on the run for a crime they did not commit the characters will be comprised of four Desert Storm vets. It's genre will also shift towards a more serious action-oriented Die Hard style film. Cannell promises the characters to be much better at aiming than their predecessors, yes people will die with this A-Team.

This brings us to 21 Jump (mandatory pause) Street. This story outline has also been completed. A new batch of characters will be introduced but unlike Battlestar Galactica, the old characters will make appearances as well.

Bay May Direct The Island for DreamWorks

DreamWorks has bought Caspian Tredwell-Owen's spec script The Island for $1 million against $1.5 million. Michael Bay is circling the project to direct, says Variety.

Similar in theme to Logan's Run, the sci-fi thriller centers on a "harvested being" who becomes self-aware and must escape the utopian facility where he and others are being kept.

"The Island" is also similar in theme to Spares, a sci-fi novel by Michael Marshall Smith that Paramount is adapting. The studio was apparently interested in combining the two projects and attaching Tom Cruise, whose production company C/W has a deal with the studio, until DreamWorks snatched the project.

Tredwell-Owen recently wrote the Angelina Jolie starrer Beyond Borders. His current projects include the scripts A Very Private Gentleman for Universal, and another sci-fi thriller, After Man, for DreamWorks.

CBS Apologizes for Jackson's Exposure

CBS apologized on Sunday for an unexpectedly R-rated end to its Super Bowl halftime show, when singer Justin Timberlake tore off part of Janet Jackson 's top, exposing her breast.

"CBS deeply regrets the incident," spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade said after the network received several calls about the show.

The two singers were performing a flirtatious duet to end the halftime show, and at the song's finish, Timberlake reached across Jackson's leather gladiator outfit and pulled off the covering to her right breast.

The network quickly cut away from the shot, and did not mention the incident on the air.

Timberlake said he did not intend to expose Jackson's breast.

"I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl," Timberlake said in a statement. "It was not intentional and is regrettable."

Wade said CBS officials attended rehearsals of the halftime show all week, "and there was no indication any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS' broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended."

The Super Bowl halftime show, which also featured P. Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock, was produced by MTV, CBS' corporate cousin in Viacom.

"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show," Joe Browne, NFL executive vice president, said. "They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show.

"It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."

MTV issued a contrite statement, saying the incident was "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional."

Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios is rumoured to be working on a film adaptation of Frank Miller's comic which Robert himself might direct. Cinematography wise there's apparently going to be a unique tri-colour/high contrast method to filming whilst casting wise Josh Hartnett may have already tested.

David Alan Basche (NBC's "Three Sisters") closed his deal to play "Wilbur" in the remake pilot. Want Chris Rock to provide the voice of Mr. Ed but it's a super longshot. If not him, it be someone else "urban" like that.

Seinfeld Veterans to Face-Off

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has signed on to appear in multiple episodes of Fox's critically acclaimed comedy Arrested Development, says Variety. The show airs Sundays at 9:30 p.m. and is up against the primary run of the Louis-Dreyfus' former Seinfeld boss Larry David's equally hailed comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Louis-Dreyfus will play Maggie Lizer, a blind attorney who winds up having a one-night stand with lead character Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman). But Michael then finds out that Maggie is the lawyer assigned to prosecute his father (Jeffrey Tambor).

It's her first major TV role since her short-lived NBC laffer Watching Ellie. She also appeared in several episodes of David's "Curb."

Sci Fi Wants More Battlestar Galactica

After successfully relaunching the Battlestar Galactica franchise as a mini-series in December, Sci Fi Channel picked up the options last week on its top cast members, which include Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell and Katee Sackhoff.

The Hollywood Reporter says the cable network is aiming to bow "Galactica" as a full-fledged series as early as fourth-quarter 2004. At least six episodes are expected to be shot in Vancouver as soon as April.

The four-hour mini-series averaged 4.2 million viewers last year, making it the third-highest-rated multinight program Sci Fi has aired.

One day after Janet Jackson's shocking Super Bowl halftime performance, the singer took responsibility for the breast-baring incident and said she never intended the stunt to go as far as it did.

"The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals," Jackson said in a statement released Monday (February 2). "MTV was completely unaware of it. It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended — including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL."

Jackson's performance shocked onlookers when Justin Timberlake — who was performing with her — pulled off a piece of Jackson's costume, revealing her right breast.

MTV, which produced the halftime show for CBS, issued an apology shortly after the show, calling the incident "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and ... inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance.
Timberlake also apologized on Sunday, calling the incident "not intentional and regrettable."

On Sunday, Jackson's reps told MTV News that the singer apologized for the move, but the singer issued no public statement on the incident until Monday.

MTV released this statement Monday night:

"MTV was as surprised and shocked as anyone last night. Janet Jackson acknowledged that we had no prior knowledge of her plans. We will continue to investigate the circumstances.

Our goal with the Super Bowl Halftime show was to produce an entertaining stage experience with a positive message about empowerment and voting. We are disappointed that this message has been overshadowed by the unfortunate incident.

MTV apologizes again to anyone who was offended."

Patrick Stewart Says X-Men 3 in 2005

The Bradenton Herald spoke to Patrick Stewart, aka Prof. Xavier in the X-Men films, about the third installment.

Despite Star Trek's continued success in syndication and on the silver screen, a younger generation of viewers knows Stewart best not as Captain Picard, but as Professor Charles Xavier, from the two blockbuster X-Men pictures, the latter of which opened in 2003.

"X-Men 3 should come out in 2005," Stewart said on the red carpet. During the discussion inside the theater he said he hoped the franchise continues for several more films.

He also said he won't be doing any more "Star Trek" films.

Variety reports that The WB has greenlit a pilot for Warren Ellis' Global Frequency.

Then there's "Global Frequency," which [Mark] Burnett will exec produce along with John Rogers ("The Core"), who's writing the pilot.

Actioner revolves around a shadowy figure named Miranda Zero, who starts a top-secret worldwide independent defense intelligence organization.

Warren Ellis created the comic book, which comes from the DC Comics imprint Wildstorm. "Global Frequency" reps the first Wildstorm title to be developed into a feature or TV project since DC acquired the company five years ago.
