Hot Numbers for Fahrenheit 9/11
Source: E!

Fahrenheit 9/11 ignited the box-office this weekend.

Michael Moore's clip package assault on President Bush was even hotter than anticipated, earning a searing $21.8 million at only 868 sites, for a blockbuster $25,115 per screen average.

Embraced by left-wingers and winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, Fahrenheit 9/11 was scorned by the right-wingers and dumped by Disney. Producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein then collaborated with Lions Gate Films and IFC Entertainment to bring the film to what turns out to be the eager masses. Costing only $6 million to produce and less than $10 million to market, the pay-off is obvious for this provocative R rated documentary critically praised for its wit, heart and chutzpah. a d v e r t i s e m e n t

This is not only the best opening ever for a documentary, it's already the most money ever taken in by a documentary ever, beating Moore's anti-gun Bowling for Columbine, which has taken in $21.5 million since opening in October 2002. That movie actually had a slightly higher per screen average - $26,144 - but only debuted at eight sites and, despite winning an Oscar, never played at more than 248 locations.

Moore, during a Sunday morning teleconference, described his documentary as presenting "my opinion based on fact." He said he didn't feel under attack. "Hearing this news this morning - these are mind blowing numbers. And the fact that all the predictions that the movie would only speak to the choir, that it would only be those who don't like Bush coming to the movie, I don't think have turned out to be true. This movie has played in the Red states as strongly as it's played in the Blue states."

"This is maybe the sleeper hit of all time," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations Inc., the company that tallies the studios' grosses.

Lions Gate Films Releasing President Tom Ortenberg said he'd never witnessed such a positive response before on exit surveys. In the around 15 cities surveyed the results were "91 percent 'excellent' and 93 per cent 'definite recommend.'"

The audience was almost 50/50 male/female and the highest demographic was 25-34 year olds. Anticipating that excellent word of mouth will carry over, the distributors plan to add hundreds more screens next week, although they will be going up against the anticipated summer blockbuster Spider-Man 2.

IFC Entertainment's President Jonathan Sehring said they were "happy to announce the efforts of a small minded few to suppress and censor the film have failed miserably." But he said he would not include Michael Eisner, Disney's head honcho, in that group.

However making the Disney duck-out look particularly bad business is the fact that the Mouse House's ultra expensive family adventure Around the World in Eighty Days, which only opened an abysmal ninth last week, dropped out of the top ten. Falling 44 percent to eleventh place, it earned just $4.2 million from a $1,520 per screen average to brings its currently gross to a woeful $18.2 million.

Left in "Fahrenheit"'s shade in second place was the new Wayans Bros. comedy White Chicks. At more than three times as many sites - 2,726 - the PG-13 Sony release in which the bros play FBI agents who change color to go undercover, averaged $7,190 for $19.6 million.

In fifth place The Notebook, a romantic drama, starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling as parted lovers and Gena Rowlands and James Garner as their older selves, had a solid enough opening. The PG-13 New Line release (s)wept in to 2,303 sites where it averaged $5,656 for $13 million.

Universal's Two Brothers, the save-the-tigers or at least leave-'em-alone-to-save-themselves tale, opened in ninth place. The PG rated Universal release, starring magnificent beasts and < a href="/Facts/People/0,12,23139,00.html">Guy Pearce, averaged $2,851 at 2,175 sites, to paw up a cub size $6.2 million.

Last week's number one Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story got bruised, but not totally beamed, dropping only 38 percent to earn $18.5 million in third place, bringing the Ben Spiller's goofy comedy's two week total to $67.1 million. Last week's number two Tom Hanks' immigrant-in-limbo The Terminal held on a bit better. dropping only 27 percent for a fourth place $13.9 million to bring its current gross to $41.8 million.

Overall the top 12 movies grossed $135.6 million, up 3.8 percent for last weekend and a solid 20.4 percent above this time last year when Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle flew in first with $37.6 million, but a much lower per screen average than Fahrenheit 9/11 - just $10,880 at 3,459 sites.

Final figures are due Monday. Meantime here's the top 12 estimated by Exhibitor Relations.

1. Fahrenheit 9/11, $21.8 million
2. White Chicks, $19.6 million
3. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, $18.5 million
4. The Terminal, $13.9 million
5. The Notebook, $13 million
6. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, $11.4 million
7. Shrek 2, $10.5 million
8. Garfield, $7 million
9. Two Brothers, $6.2 million
10. The Stepford Wives, $5.2 million

Titney Gets Engaged
Britney gets engaged to dancer beau -- The injury-sidelined singer plans to wed Kevin Federline, her boyfriend of two months by Gary Susman
Source: Entertainment Weekly
Oops, she did it again. For the second time this year, Britney Spears has given J. Lo a run for her money and gotten engaged. This time, she's been linked to the guy for more than a few hours; in fact, she's been dating Kevin Federline for a good two months. People reports that Spears and Federline are officially engaged, and Reuters cites confirmation of the impending nuptials from Spears' publicist and from her label, Jive Records. It'll be the second marriage for Spears, 22 (who notoriously wed hometown pal Jason Alexander for 55 hours in a spontaneous Las Vegas hitching in January), and the first for Federline, 26, who is coming off a four-year relationship with ''Moesha'' actress Shar Jackson, who is the mother of his two-year-old daughter and is about to give birth to his second child.

Spears has been frequently photographed over the last two months canoodling in public with Federline. He was with her earlier this month during the video shoot where she injured her knee during a dance move, forcing the cancellation of the rest of her Onyx Hotel tour. Just last week, Spears' reps were professing not to know whether the two were engaged, despite a report in the New York Post quoting friends of the couple as saying they were on their way down the aisle. No word yet on a wedding date or venue, but we bet Vegas is off the list.

Filming Starts on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Source: Coming Soon!
Principal photography is now underway on Warner Bros. Pictures' Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's much loved "Harry Potter" novel series.

With production based at England's Leavesden Studios, the film is directed by Mike Newell (Mona Lisa Smile, Four Weddings and a Funeral) and produced by David Heyman. The screenplay is by Steve Kloves, who has penned the screenplays for all three previous "Harry Potter" films. David Barron (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) serves as executive producer.

Joining the ensemble are several new cast members, led by esteemed actor Brendan Gleeson (Troy, Cold Mountain), who plays Hogwarts' new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Mad-Eye Moody. Frances De La Tour (The Cherry Orchard, Strike it Rich) plays the Headmistress of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, Madame Maxime; Roger Lloyd-Pack (Vanity Fair, BBC TV's Only Fools and Horses) plays the Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation, Barty Crouch; Pedja Bjelac (Eurotrip) plays Durmstrang Professor Igor Karkaroff; Jeff Rawle (Inspector Calls II, Baal, TV's Drop the Dead Donkey) plays Amos Diggory; and David Tennant (Bright Young Things) plays Barty Crouch Jr.

New additions to the young cast include Robert Pattinson (The Ring) as Cedric Diggory; Stanislav Ianevski as Quidditch star Viktor Krum; Clemence Poesy (Bienvenue chez les Rozes, Petite Soeur) as Fleur Delacour; and Katie Leung as Cho Chang.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Tom Felton once again reprise the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and their archrival Draco Malfoy, respectively. In the roles of fellow Hogwarts students are Matthew Lewis as Neville; Devon Murray as Seamus; Jamie Waylett as Crabbe; Joshua Herdman as Goyle; Alfie Enoch as Dean; Oliver and James Phelps as Fred and George Weasley; and Chris Rankin as Percy.

Returning to the adult ensemble are Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid; Michael Gambon as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore; Robert Hardy as Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge; Shirley Henderson as Moaning Myrtle; Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy; Gary Oldman as Sirius Black; Alan Rickman as Professor Snape; Dame Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall; Timothy Spall as Peter Pettigrew; and Mark Williams as Arthur Weasley.

The production also welcomes back production designer Stuart Craig ("Sorcerer's Stone," "Chamber of Secrets"); director of photography Roger Pratt ("Chamber of Secrets"); costume designer Jany Temime ("Prisoner of Azkaban"); VFX supervisor Jim Mitchell ("Chamber of Secrets"); and creature effects and make-up supervisor Nick Dudman ("Prisoner of Azkaban," "Chamber of Secrets"). Mick Audsley (Mona Lisa Smile, High Fidelity) joins "Goblet of Fire" as editor.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be released in November 2005 by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Ronny Yu Helming Snakes on a Plane
Source: Coming Soon!
Freddy vs. Jason director Ronny Yu will next helm the thriller Snakes on a Plane for New Line Cinema, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The film centers on a ruthless assassin who unleashes a crate full of lethal snakes aboard a packed passenger jet over the Pacific Ocean in order to eliminate a witness in protective custody. The rookie pilot and frightened passengers must band together to survive.

The John Heffernan and David Loucka script was first set up at MTV Films before making its way to New Line, adds the trade.

Famiglietti & Garrison Writing Horror Succubus
Source: Coming Soon!
MGM has hired actors-turned-writers Mark Famiglietti and Lane Garrison to pen horror comedy Succubus, based on an idea by Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson.

Variety says the project's launching point is the legend of a cult of female demons, called succubae, who use their supermodel looks to seduce and steal men's souls to rule the planet.

The story concerns two twentysomething best friends, one a ladies man, the other a nerd, whose lives are turned upside down when the nerd miraculously starts dating a supermodel. When the handsome friend discovers the supermodel is actually a succubus, he takes action and attempts to bring down the race of beautiful but evil succubae.

Johnson will produce and may also direct after he completes the Ghost Rider comic book adaptation starring Nicolas Cage.

King Arthur star is apparently Fantastic
Source: Moviehole

Ioan Gruffodd ["King Arthur"] is reportedly in talks to play Mr.Fantastic in "The Fantastic Four", according to IESB.net.

Gruffodd was asked by the site whether or not he has tested for any roles like "Superman". He said he hadn't tested for that one, but if everything goes well, there might be something else, which will be announced this week (the same week Avi Arad said that the "The Fantastic Four" cast will be announced).

Earlier today, the same site got a second confirmation that Grufford is up for a role in the film, adding that it is indeed for role of Mr Fantastic, previously linked to George Clooney.

Judge scolds Courtney Love
Monday, June 28, 2004 Posted: 9:29 PM EDT (0129 GMT)
Source: CNN

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Courtney Love showed up five hours late to a New York court hearing on a reckless endangerment charge Monday, drawing a sharp rebuke from the judge, who warned the dazed-looking rocker that she narrowly missed being deemed a fugitive.

A visibly annoyed New York Criminal Court Judge Melissa Jackson admonished the 39-year-old singer that she was about to issue a bench warrant for Love's arrest for being tardy.

"I want to make it clear to you that you are supposed to be in court at 9:30, not 3 o'clock," Jackson said. "Three o'clock is not acceptable. The rule applies to you, the same as it does to everyone else."

Taking a box of cigarettes from her purse as she stood in the courtroom, and seemingly bewildered in pink spike heels, Love barely mustered an apology to the judge, replying, "Sorry."

A California judge issued an arrest warrant for Love in February after the former lead singer of the rock band Hole skipped proceedings in two criminal cases, but that warrant was withdrawn when Love made it to a later hearing.

Before her case was called on Monday, Love took a seat in the second row of the gallery, next to two other defendants, asked their names and offered them cigarettes, which they declined.

Love is accused of reckless endangerment stemming from an East Village nightclub engagement in March in which police said she threw a microphone stand into the audience, striking a man in the head. If convicted, she faces up to a year in jail.

As her lawyer, Scott Tulman, and prosecutor David Filer met at the bench with the judge to set up a schedule of court motions, Love became fidgety, turning around to spectators in the courtroom, and began talking to another defendant handcuffed to a bench, until she was told to keep quiet.

Asked how she felt following the 15-minute hearing, Love answered: "I feel great except for this nonsense."

Earlier this month, Love turned herself in to authorities in California to face an assault charge stemming from an altercation with another woman in April at the Los Angeles home of her ex-boyfriend. Days later she postponed a summer concert tour to deal with her mounting legal problems.

She pleaded guilty in Los Angeles in May to having been under the influence of cocaine when police found her breaking windows in the middle of the night last October. She faces a separate drug possession charge in Beverly Hills.

Twice the Anchorman on DVD
Source: DarkHorizons

At the recent press junket for the Will Ferrell comedy "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy", Director Adam McKay talked with Movieweb and revealed some surprising information about the planned DVD release of the film late this year.

We've heard that there's an eight-hour director's cut of the movie?
McKay: Eight hours? That would be amazing. We did have a four-hour cut of the movie...We did. We had a four-hour version of the movie that was just littered with cold runs, and stuff like that.

Do you think we'll ever see that version of the movie?
McKay: Yeah, we're going to put out a DVD with all of it. We literally had enough extra footage that we made another, second movie called Wake Up, Ron Burgundy. That's right. I'm not kidding. That is not a joke. It's absolutely true. It's an hour and forty minute second movie of entirely fresh material that will eventually be put out on DVD.

So you're committed to putting it out?
McKay: Yeah. They told us they were. I mean, define committed. I chased down Katzenburg and said, "Are you going to put it out?" And he said, "Get off me! Get your arm off me!" I took that as a yes.

Are they going to do more than one DVD release?
McKay: I think they're going to do one kinda straight-ahead release. Where it's just a movie with some outtakes. And then they're going to do a second release. It's like a two DVD release with that second movie one it, Wake Up, Ron Burgundy....

Johnny Depp Back to Work with Tim Burton!
Source: Bloody Disgusting

Huge news comes in from the trades regarding Tim Burton's upcoming claymation film, The Corpse Bride, which is now set for an October 2005 release. Not only has Johnny Depp been added to the cast of voices, but so have tons of other people, read on to find out who!

Variety reports that before he toplines back-to-back "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels, Johnny Depp will first pull double duty for Tim Burton and Warner Bros.

Already booked to play Willy Wonka in the Burton-directed "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," Depp has just made a deal to provide the lead voice in "Corpse Bride," the stop-motion animated film Burton is co-directing with Michael Johnson and producing with Allison Abbate.

Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, Albert Finney, Richard Grant, Joanna Lumley and Christopher Lee will provide character voices for the latter film, being made in London simultaneously with "Charlie."

WB will release the Wonka pic July 15, 2005, and "Corpse Bride" in October 2005.

Latter film shares the stop-motion animation technique used in the Burton-produced "The Nightmare Before Christmas," as well as a similarly charming but macabre setting. In a 19th-century European village, Victor (Depp) travels to the underworld for a quickie wedding to a mysterious corpse bride (Bonham Carter) while his living wife (Watson) pines for his return.

Burton has populated the film with actors who've made movies with him in the past. Prior to "Charlie," Depp starred in "Ed Wood," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Sleepy Hollow." Finney made "Big Fish" and Lee "Sleepy Hollow." Bonham Carter starred in the Burton-directed "Planet of the Apes."

The film is being scored by Burton's regular collaborator, Danny Elfman.

"Corpse Bride" was scripted by Caroline Thompson ("Edward Scissorhands") and Pamela Pettler. Jeffrey Auerbach is exec producing.

Will Schwarzenegger return to film for Conan?
Source: Moviehole
Last week we reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger - and not rumoured replacement, Triple H - might be returning to the role of Conan for the long-awaited "King Conan", and TheArnoldFans checked in with creator John Milius's camp to get their take on the news.

Milius's camp isn't aware of the WB's intentions, but can confirm that Arnold did call John a few months back and asked him to wait for him so they can do the film together.

"...it appears Arnold is having second thoughts and is eager to return to movies with the movie role that made him famous", says the site.

"John Milius is still unsure if he wants to wait a couple more years for Arnold to return or if he should have wrestling star Triple H fill his boots and begin filming sooner. Although Arnold asked Milius to wait for him, Arnold is still not 100 percent sure if this will be his last term. If the constitution changes, I am told Arnold said he will seriously consider running for president. One way or another, Arnold will be King."

The site also says that the rights - currently held by the WB - to the "Conan" series are expiring soon and
Milius might hand the rights to
Electronic Arts crowd.

IGNFilmForce have an update on the film too though, and according to them, Schwarzenegger's unlikely to be in the film.

A source told the site that Schwarzemegger has no interested in the project because he's "seriously mulling another run for office. Our insider, however, did advise us that the Conan rights may indeed be up for grabs soon."

Geoffrey Rush back for Pirates of the Caribbean 2?
Source: Moviehole
Jerry Buckheimer hinted to About.Com this week that Geoffrey Rush may indeed be back for “Pirates of the Caribbean 2” – despite his character’s bereavement in the first film.

Asking about the cast that will be on board the sequel, Bruckheimer said “That’s going to be a secret. I’m not going tell you, but we have plans.” in relation to whether Oscar Winner Rush will be back.

Twin-brother perhaps?

Meanwhile, The Uber-Producer confirmed that they’ll actually be filming two sequels back to back. “We made a deal with Gore [Verbinski] to do 2 and 3. We made a deal with [Ted] Elliot and [Terry] Rossio who rewrote the first film. They did an outline for 2 and 3. They’re writing number 2 right now and we’re negotiating with all the actors.”

The story will continue through the two sequels, he says “It will be continuing, but you’ll definitely have an end at the end of two. The story will pick up again in three.”

Though they are negotiating, Bruckheimer is confident that the lead actors will return. “Johnny [Depp]’s really excited about doing it. You can ask Keira [Knightley]. I think she’s excited about doing it and we’d love to have Orlando [Bloom] back. He’s told Gore he wants to do it. So it comes down to if you can financially afford them because they’ve all become bigger stars than they were when we first started three years ago.”

Bruckheimer also hinted that the adventure could expand beyond the Caribbean. “It’ll still be the Caribbean and we might go to Thailand, to the Far East.”

Sandy Collora or Michael Bay to helm Superman?
Source: Moviehole
According to a scooper for Aint it Cool, Michael Bay [“Armageddon”, “Pearl Harbor”] could be back onboard “Superman”.

Bay was involved with the film a while back, but left – apparently he wanted Josh Hartnett to don the tights and Warner didn’t – only to be replaced by the initial director McG.

“Apparently he's looking for something big, as he's having trouble getting the budget he wants for his "Island" project at DreamWorks. Apparently part of the reason Moritz came on-board Supes was that Bay was attached to direct I AM LEGEND for him and former partner, HARRY POTTER franchise and WB-based producer David Heyman. With Adelstein gone from Original, and Sony having inked a deal with DeLuca (which pissed Neal off), he and Heyman are mulling re-teaming up. It doesn't hurt that Neal has close ties to potential Lex Luthor Vin Diesel and was shooting STEALTH in Australia, where WB wants to do SUPERMAN. I know for a fact Neal loves Australia, and he's been trying to convince studios to shoot a lot of his productions there. Heyman, like every other producer on the WB lot, has been trying to get on Supes. Aside from the Potter films, what's going to put him where Joel Silver can't get, is his relationship with Neal and they're combined relationship with Bay.”

Meanwhile, Superman-V.com is reporting that the reason McG may left the film is that he failed to go on a location scout in Australia. The site hears that Sandy Collora [“Batman : Dead-End”] may be in talks to join the flick in some capacity. Now that might be interesting…

Does anyone else really give a hoot about the “Superman” flick anymore? It fits more neatly next to “Crusades” in the excel “development hell” spreadsheet, don’t you think?
