The Italian Job Cast Reuniting for Sequel
Source: ComingSoon!
Paramount Pictures is in talks to bring back The Italian Job stars Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, Mos Def and Jason Statham for the sequel being developed by producer John Goldwyn, reports Variety.

The trade says that, while the script is not finished, the goal is to start filming in late March for a November 2005 release. F. Gary Gray, who directed last year's $106 million blockbuster remake of the 1969 original, will be the first choice to helm the sequel.

The sequel script is being penned by Wayne and Donna Powers, the husband-and-wife team who wrote the remake and set it in Venice and Hollywood. Primary locations in the sequel are expected to be St. Tropez, Paris and the French Alps.

Live-Action Fantastic Planet Feature Coming
Source: ComingSoon!
Variety reports that Circle Of Confusion and newly formed Five Windows Productions are developing a live-action remake of French animated sci-fi film Fantastic Planet, which won the Grand Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival.

Five Windows' new projects also include a remake of 1972 British supernatural thriller The Asphyx, about a man who can photograph souls as they leave the dying, and 1970's Blood on Satan's Claw, in which the children of a village slowly become a satanic coven.

The company is teamed with co-producer Ian Levy on Evenmere, an adaptation of James Stoddard's fantasy novel The High House.

Patrick Stewart Says X-Men 3 Starts in June!
Source: SuperheroHype!
'Luthor Kain' sent in this awesome scoop from today's Q&A session with Patrick Stewart in Toronto:

Great news for X-Men fans! I was present for an "Intimate & Interactive" session with Patrick Stewart held this afternoon - September 25, 2004, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre at 4pm.

A fan asked Mr. Stewart about the status of X-Men 3. Mr. Stewart stated that X-Men 3 will go into production next June 2005 in Vancouver, however nobody knows which cast members will return since there is no script and director.

Well, at least the ball is rolling for X-Men 3 and hopefully a director will be named before the year ends. Thank you for your time!

Great news indeed, stay tuned for more news as it comes in!

Dan Harris on the New Superman Movie
Source: SuperheroHype!
In David Giammarco's Photo Blog at CTV, he mentions he talked to Dan Harris (X2: X-Men United) about writing the new Superman movie.

But Dan Harris assured me that this new Superman film will not be some crazy reworking of the legend as had been rumored. He said it will be similar in tone to the first two "Superman" films and will basically "pick up" where "Superman 2" left off (the best of the series, I might add!!) He hinted that even Terrence Stamp, who played General Zod so terrifyingly well in the first two "Superman" films, "figures" into this new "Superman" film...he was being coy, but it looks like he's got some big surprises in store for the much-anticipated "Superman" film.

The Blog also mentions that shooting starts in a few months.

Memorable Open for Forgotten
Source: E!

The Forgotten had a memorable debut, dominating the weekend box office with an opening take of $22 million, according to preliminary numbers Sunday.

Sony's PG-13 psychological horror movie, starring Julianne Moore as a grieving mom butting heads with mysterious forces to try to prove that her dead son really existed, is the studio's sixth number one opener of this year.

With studios dumping less commercial entries in this traditionally slow back-to-school season, The Forgotten was the only newcomer to register with audiences.

Much less successful was First Daughter, starring Katie Holmes as a presidential offspring butting heads with the powers that be to try to have a free-spirited private life. The PG Fox release debuted with just $4 million, tied in fourth place with Resident Evil: Apocalypse, still kicking zombie butt in its third week of release.

The new gory-genre spoof Shaun of the Dead, which promotes itself as a rom.zom.com, in which zombies butt into a slacker Brit's love life, opened in eighth place with $3.2 million. However, the R-rated Focus Features U.K. import could count itself a success, as it was only exposed at 607 sites, where it averaged a lively $5,368.

The Forgotten, with Gary Sinise, Anthony Edwards, Dominic West, Linus Roache and Alfre Woodard helping or hindering Moore's strange quest for the truth, opened much wider at 3,104 sites, where it averaged a solid $7,088.

First Daughter, at 2,259 theaters, pulled a measly $1,771 per-site average.

In limited release, The Motorcycle Diaries, starring Gael Garcia Bernal as pre-revolutionary Che Guevara, Rodrigo de la Serna as his traveling companion Alberto Granado, and a Norton bike as their means of transportation on a mind-opening journey through 1950s South America, revved to a jammed-packed $52,351 per screen at just three sites for $157,054--more good news for Focus Features, which released the R-rated biographical drama.

The Yes Men, the R-rated MGM documentary about political pranksters' anti-World Trade Organization antics, drew a positive $8,333 average at three sites, for $25,000.

The Last Shot, a comedy that pokes fun at everybody's desire to be in showbiz, averaged $4,829 at 35 screens. The R-rated Buena Vista release, starring Alec Baldwin as a government agent who gets the Hollywood bug after he cons desperate eager-beaver filmmaker Matthew Broderick into making a movie to help take down some mobsters, grossed a so-so $169,000.

Doing roughly the same with a $4,781 average was Miramax's crime thriller import from Hong Kong, Infernal Affairs. It played at just five screens and grossed $23,907.

Last week's top movie, the retro futuristic Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, crashed 57 percent into second place, earning only $6.7 million to bring the expensive production's two-week gross to a mere $25.5 million.

Staying more successfully in the game was Bernie Mac's baseball comedy Mr. 3000, which only dropped 42 percent, down from second place to third, where it earned $5 million to bring its two-week gross to $15.3 million.

The other sports-themed movie, the romantic comedy Wimbledon, was definitely ad-out and facing defeat. It dropped 52 percent down from fourth place to seventh, where it earned $3.4 million to brings its two-week gross to just $12.1 million.

Overall, it was another down week, the top 12 films only grossing $60 million, 5 percent less than last week, and 25 percent less than this time last year.

Here is a rundown of the top 10, based on studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations; final figures are due Monday:

1. The Forgotten, $22 million
2. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, $6.7 million
3. Mr. 3000, $5 million
4. (tie) First Daughter, $4 million
4. (tie) Resident Evil: Apocalypse, $4 million
6. Cellular, $3.6 million
7. Wimbledon, $3.4 million
8. Shaun of the Dead, $3.2 million
9. Without a Paddle, $2.3 million
10. Hero, $2.2 million

Re: Weekly Entertainment News

Big SUPERMAN Thingee
Source: AIN'T IT COOL NEWS
Hey folks, Harry here with the latest on SUPERMAN - everything in this report jives with what my sources have told me so far. And you'll notice Singer's response regarding "Jesus" ahem.... Mark - I told ya so! Anyway, seems like Bryan is aiming at a March start date for shooting! And so far, it ain't derailing! Here ya go...
Hey Harry -

You published a review of Intolerable Cruelty awhile back...and that's about it. I visit the site. Obviously.

Anyway, Bryan Singer, Michael Dougherty, and Dan Harris ALL visited NYU this morning and spoke to a group of around 30 students, including myself. I was expecting the film students there to diluge Singer with questions about the Usual Suspects, for the most part, but really, for an hour or so, all we did was talk about Superman.

He made no mention of the title whatsoever, although the guy who ran the meeting referred to Singer as the director of the upcoming "Superman Returns." For all we know, he might have just lifted it from the site.

Anyway, here are some tidbits.

- When asked if it will be a sequel, remake, or origin story, he said, in so many words, sequel. He said that the previous movies will be referenced in a "vague historical sense" (this wasn't clarified), and that the origin itself will be handled in the same way it was in the first Batman movie, with intercutting flashbacks.

- When asked the "status," he hesitated, but said that they were moving to Sydney (in which they've rented 8-10 acres) in November (they scouted "several weeks ago"), and shooting would begin IN MARCH.

- Casting came up. He said that right now the main offices are setup in New York and LA, but he has 10 offices "all over the world." He said that he's only looking for Lexes and Supermans right now, but he has a "sense of where he's going to look" for his supporting players. Many students around the room were hoping for a shot at Jimmy. He said that he really wants to cast an unknown in the lead.

- Caviezel came up. He said, with ample humor, that since Caviezel, is KNOWN, he won't cast him. He also mentioned that he's looking for an actor between 25 and 30.

- I asked him afterwards (that's right, I talked to him! Yeah! Sigh...) if he was going to, as a director, go for a mythic Donner-like approach or more character based, like Smallvile aspires to be (i don't that show, consequently, despite the fact that Superman is my religion), and he responded quickly. "Mythic. Definitely."

- He mentioned his pitch to Alan Horn right after the dismissal of McG. He mentioned that at that point, they were still doing the Abrams draft, which he hadn't read, and that he knew, immediately after the pitch, that his plans for Logan's Run would have to be put on hold, that Fox would get pissed at him for dumping X-Men 3, because he KNEW that Horn liked his pitch, and that they would forget about the $50 million they spent over the last 11 years and make it. He said the pitch lasted around 30-40 minutes.

- On related subjects, he says that he's going to have a Logan's Run "room" setup in Sydney so he can develop it during the filming of Superman, and move on it immediately afterwards. He says that he feels bad about not participating in X-Men 3 (which he won't). He mentioned a lot of the pre-visualizations on Logan's has already been done, and he seemed really, really excited about it.

- Also on a related subject, I spoke to Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty regarding Ender's Game. They said they did 3 drafts and haven't heard anything more about it. They told me some details, which I'm not going to share, but I'm really happy with some of the changes they made.

- Back to Superman. He said the look will be "traditional." That's good.

- I'm trying to remember if he said anything else, but I think that's about it. He seemed pretty confident that it was getting made, mentioning that "Warner really wants Superman," which he said contributed to him getting tapped to do it. But it was all his idea - Singer, Harris, and Dougherty did the whole thing when in Hawaii and decided, rather sporadically, to pitch it. And it worked.

I guess that's about it. He was a blast to listen to, very funny and honest. Harris and Dougherty, who look like they're about 12, were great also, and this was a confidence booster to me big time that they're up to it.

Oh, one more thing. He was asked how solid he was on his vision for the now-reassigned X-Men 3 and mentioned only that he would probably have to add in Gambit because "he's so easy." He said that Angel was cut from X2, Beast from X-Men, and that neither, he thought, would ever "come back." That's all.

So, if you use this, call me...

SR Hadden

U2 Sets Track List, 'Vertigo' Explodes At Radio
Source: Billboard

U2 has confirmed the full track list for its upcoming album, "How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," due Nov. 23 via Interscope. The set does not include the tracks "Tough" or "Full Metal Jacket," which band members had previously mentioned as possible selections. Among the newly announced titles are "Miracle Drug," "One Step Closer" and "Love and Peace or Else."

The album's first single, "Vertigo," is already making a bomb-size impact at U.S. radio outlets. After just three days of airplay, the cut is expected to debut this week in the top 20 of Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and the top 30 of the Mainstream Rock Tracks tally.

At present, "Vertigo" is exclusively available for download via Apple's iTunes Music Store. According to a spokesperson, the track ascended into the service's top 10 within 24 hours and is now No. 1 on the list of most downloaded selections.

U2's official Web site is hosting clips of the band performing "Vertigo" in its Dublin recording studio plus other exclusive footage of a recent photo shoot.

And while the band is not expected to begin touring until next spring, tidbits have begun leaking out about specific stops. According to Ireland's Sunday Business Report, U2 will play Dublin's Croke Park on June 26-27, with the possibility of a third show depending on demand.

Here is the track list for "How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb":

"Vertigo"
"Miracle Drug"
"Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own"
"Love and Peace or Else"
"City of Blinding Lights"
"All Because of You"
"A Man and a Woman"
"Crumbs From Your Table"
"One Step Closer"
"Original of the Species"
"Yahweh"

All Hail Extended King
Source: E!

Frodo fanatics' who couldn't get enough of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers extra long special editions can now kill even more time in front of the television.

New Line Cinema has announced Dec. 14 as the release date for Peter Jackson's extended DVD cut of his Oscar-sweeping The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, featuring over 50 minutes of brand new footage.

The Rings master excised the scenes from his trilogy-capping epic's theatrical release to keep the running time down, but he always intended to restore the segments for the home video version as he did with the first two installment.

Among the restored scenes: The scouring of the Shire, where we learn the fate of Saruman, the evil white wizard played by Christopher Lee, who was MIA from King after being deposed at the conclusion of The Two Towers; a subplot on the emerging romance between Faramir and Eowyn; Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen confronting the Mouth of Sauron at the Black Gates; and a cameo by Jackson as a pirate who is felled by one of Legolas' stray arrows.

"With even more added footage than the special extended editions of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, this new version of The Return of the King is truly a landmark cinematic experience," says Stephen Einhorn, New Line Home Entertainment president and chief operating officer.

For those Hobbit heads who couldn't get enough of Middle-Earth in the theatrical release, which ran a hefty three hours and 20 minutes, the extended edition clocks in at four hours and 10 minutes.

The four-disc DVD set will retail for approximately $40, with a double-cassette VHS version going for $25.

It will include more than 300 new special-effects shot created by WETA Digital, as well as an all-new score by composer Howard Shore. The new set will feature four audio commentaries supplied by Jackson, actors Elijah Wood, Sean Astin and Orlando Bloom and members of the production crew, including Academy Award winners Richard Taylor (makeup), Randy Cook (visual effects) and Shore.

The first two discs will contain the 250-minute movie. Discs three and four have the extras--behind-the-scenes documentaries, design and photo galleries, interactive maps and access to exclusive online content via DVD-ROM.

A limited edition collector's version of King set also includes a fifth disc containing a 52-minute featurette titled Howard Shore: Creating the Lord of the Rings Symphony--A Composer's Journey Through Middle-Earth as well as excerpts of live concert footage of The Lord of the Rings symphony recorded with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

Jackson and Taylor also threw in a hand-painted sculpture of Minas Tirith--the seven-tiered City of Kings--designed by Sideshow WETA Collectibles workshop that will go inside the limited edition collector's DVD gift set, which will be priced at $80.

The special extended edition follows May's successful video launch of the theatrical cut, which has sold a combined 10 million copies on VHS and DVD.

The Return of the King has become only the second film to break the billion-dollar-mark at the worldwide box office, following in the wake of Titanic. King and Titanic also jointly hold the record for most Oscar wins, with 11 apiece.
