WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Joss Whedon Not Involved with X-Men 3
Source: SuperheroHype!

WHEDONesque attended the Joss Whedon fundraiser for the John Kerry campaign in which he finally put to rest rumors about X-Men 3:

Joss said he would NOT be directing Xmen3, he wasn't going to be writing or directing it…he thought long and hard about it but Fox didn't ask him and if he showed up to start directing it would be a faux pas.

B.O. Has "Grudge" Against Affleck
Source:E!
Looks like Ben Affleck won't have to worry about surviving Christmas. After this weekend, his new movie likely won't make it much past Halloween.

Surviving Christmas, the Affleck-decked Yuletide comedy, was passed up by moviegoers who spent the majority of their dollars on the more seasonally appropriate horror flick, The Grudge.
A remake of a Japanese chiller, à la The Ring, The Grudge scared up $40 million in its Friday-Sunday debut, according to estimates from the box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations.

The movie, featuring a return to fright-night form for Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar, posted the third-biggest October opening ever, behind Scary Movie 3 ($48.1 million) and Shark Tale ($47.6 million), which finally fell from the top slot after three weeks, finishing solidly in second with $14.3 million.

By comparison, The Ring opened with a shy $15 million in October 2002, en route to a monster $129.1 million, per the ticket-tracking Website BoxOfficeMojo.com.

It could be said, meanwhile, that Surviving Christmas is starting slow. But it probably won't be.

The movie appeared as lifeless as a fruitcake, and just as unloved, after a very un-merry $4.5 million opening, and a weak $1,635 per-screen average.

The debut seemed to assure Affleck of his latest box-office misfire--a dubious string that began with Gigli ($6.1 million) and continued through the big-budget Paycheck ($53.8 million) and the long-delayed Jersey Girl ($25.3 million).

To be fair, Paycheck made back its production and marketing costs with a healthy $41.6 million overseas gross, at least according to BoxOfficeMojo.com's count.

For those keeping score at home then, Affleck should be credited with three bombs out of his last four movies.

He'll next be seen trying not to put a drag on girlfriend's Jennifer Garner's big-screen career with an appearance in her starring vehicle, Elektra, a spinoff of Daredevil.

Jennifer Lopez, Affleck's previous girlfriend, is experiencing milder box-office woes with Shall We Dance?

The $50 million romantic drama, yet another Americanization of a hit Japanese movie, had a middling $8.6 million weekend, upping its take to a middling $24.4 million.

Elsewhere, ticket sales plummeted nearly 50 percent for a trio of top 10 films: the football-themed Friday Night Lights ($7 million for the weekend; $47.3 million overall); the potty-mouthed puppet comedy Team America: World Police ($6.6 million; $22.3 million); and the stalled Taxi ($4.3 million; $29.9 million).

Prospects looked brighter for the art-house likes of I Heart Huckabess, cracking the top 10 with a $3 million take from 785 screens, and the wine-loving comedy-drama Sideways, bottled $208,293 from just four screens for a weekend-best per-screen average of $52,073.

The Machinist, star Christian Bale's exercise in extreme weight loss, grossed a relatively robust $64,000 in its debut on three screens.

Here's a look at the top 10 as compiled by estimates from Exhibitor Relations:

1. The Grudge, $40 million
2. Shark Tale, $14.3 million
3. Shall We Dance?, $8.6 million
4. Friday Night Lights, $7 million
5. Team America: World Police, $6.6 million
6. Ladder 49, $5.4 million
7. Surviving Christmas, $4.5 million
8. Taxi, $4.3 million
9. The Forgotten, $3.4 million
10. I Heart Huckabees, $3 million

Stallone speaks Rambo and Rocky
Source: Moviehole

Though "Rocky 6" is 'out of contention' at the moment, a "Rambo 4" is whispered to still be on the cards at Dimension. Yep, Sly's still hoping 2005 will be the year of the comeback.

Sly Stallone talked to Maxim Magazine - via Dark Horizons - and revealed his idea for John Rambo's fourth manhunt.

"....it won't be what you think - not the same Rambo with the headband. In keeping with some sort of believability, he would be passing the torch to a younger generation of high-tech combatants. We're working on an interesting premise where Rambo is brought back from living on a ranch somewhere, and because of his skills in jungle warfare and survival, he's asked to lead a young group in a search-and-rescue mission. They can't believe this decrepit guy is a war hero, but when their technology fails, they see where Rambo excels."

Please tell me one of those young Rambos-in-training won't be his son Sage.

And despite no one wanting to touch it with a very long pointy thing, the big guy's still talking up his "Rocky 6".

"I'm always fired up to make another Rocky. It dawned on me a long time ago that I have this character who's almost autobiographical, so his story can keep going. The character can go places where the actor is in his life. The movies almost become documentaries."

Did 'SNL' Gaffe Expose Simpson Vocal Aid?
Source: Launch
Singer Ashlee Simpson 's "extra help" may have been exposed when a "Saturday Night Live" audience heard her voice — singing the wrong song — while she held a microphone at her waist.

Her record company blamed a computer glitch and she blamed her band for Sunday morning's incident, which cut off her planned performance of the song "Autobiography" on the network comedy show.

Simpson had performed her hit single "Pieces of Me" without incident earlier in the show. When she came back a second time, her band started playing and the first lines of her singing "Pieces of Me" could be heard again.

She looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and the vocal was quickly silenced.

Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage 35 seconds into the performance. NBC quickly cut to a commercial.

"What can I say?" guest host Jude Law said with Simpson standing next to him at the end of the show. "Live TV."

"Exactly," Simpson said. "I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down."

Her record company, Geffen Records, said there was a computer glitch. Instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of "Pieces of Me" started mistakenly performing, the record company said in a statement.

But it sounded suspiciously like a guide vocal that's a common — although almost always unspoken — concert aid. Either the singer "lip synchs" by mouthing words to a backing tape or has a live microphone and sings along to the tape, making the voice sound more powerful than it is.

Such vocal tricks have been used before on the show, making "Saturday Night Live" not entirely live, said a show insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A Geffen spokeswoman did not immediately return a call for comment.

Simpson's walk-off joins the lore of other unexpected music moments on "SNL": Elvis Costello stopping and changing songs on live TV, and Sinead O'Connor tearing up a picture of the pope.

Ghost House Pictures Opens Dibbuk Box
Source: ComingSoon!
Ghost House Pictures, the joint venture of Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Senator International, is opening up a Dibbuck Box. Ghost House and Columbia Pictures just released #1 The Grudge this weekend in theaters.

Also on Ghost House's production plate is 30 Days of Night, which Collateral screenwriter Stuart Beattie is adapting from Steve Niles' comic book series for Senator and Columbia.

The Grudge writer Stephen Susco will pen Dibbuk Box, reports Variety. The story is a fictional retelling of L.A. Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "Jinx in a Box," about an antique wooden box purchased on eBay that contained an evil spirit and was brought to America by a Holocaust survivor after WWII.

The film will center around a cursed relic containing mysterious familial tokens that is mistakenly purchased. The new owner must solve its mystery to save her own family.

The Grudge 2 on the Fast Track
Source: ComingSoon!
With Columbia Pictures' The Grudge opening in the top spot with an unexpected $39.1 million (the horror thriller cost less than $10 million to make), talk has quickly turned to a possible sequel for the film. The Grudge was based on the director Takashi Shimizu's own Ju-On.

Producer Roy Lee tells Creature Corner that a follow-up is now very likely. "'The Grudge 2' is now being fast-tracked, as we speak, and we're now working on the details," Lee said.

He was also asked about The Ghost, a planned remake of the Korean movie Ryeong. "It's too early to say what our approach will be with 'The Ghost' because the writer, Craig Rosenberg, is currently shooting a movie called 'Half Light' and won't be able to start working on the script for The Ghost until he completes his film."

Sarah Michelle Gellar stars in The Grudge, which is about a murderous supernatural curse born of a grudge held by someone who dies angry. The curse passes like a virus to its victims.

Painkiller Jane Coming to the Sci Fi Channel
Source: SuperheroHype!
Variety reports that Sci Fi Channel has greenlit production on a two-hour pilot for Painkiller Jane, a female-centered action-hero series:

NBC Universal TV Studios will produce the project -- which marks Sci Fi's first comicbook adaptation -- in association with MGM TV.

"Jane" is based on Joe Quesada and Jim Palmiotti's Event Comic series about a young Marine officer who is exposed to a biochemical weapon that endows her with self-healing powers.

Jane is forced to work covertly, fighting crime while running from military and medical officials who would exploit her gifts. Along the way she will meet up with a disparate group of outsiders who become her surrogate family.

Painkiller Jane is targeted for a Summer 2005 premiere on the channel. John Harrison ("Dune," "Children of Dune"), Don Opper and Greg Gold wrote and will executive produce. Casting is under way, and production is expected to begin before the end of the year.

Re: WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Anderson not making AvP 2
Source: Moviehole

Do you want the good news or the bad news first?

Ok. Good News. Paul W.S Anderson won't be making "Alien vs.Predator 2".

The Bad News? There's going to be an "Alien vs.Predator 2", regardless of how many magic mushrooms we drop into the coffee machine at TCF.

Anderson told Empire Online that he's said goodbye to films that feature both Aliens and Predators. "I'm not attached to any sequel. I never really made the movie with the intention of making a sequel. I wanted to do it as a stand-alone film that could hopefully succeed in its own terms, but also re-energise both franchises. So that Fox could go: 'Well, that made a lot of money! If you want to see Predators and Aliens again let's make a Predator 3, let's make an Alien 5.'"

Funnily enough, Anderson's been linked to the next "Alien" movie. Obviously it's something he's flying the flag for / pitched himself. Can obviously expect to hear something on that pretty soon.

No movements on "Predator 3", just yet. Screenwriter Sam Park ["The Half-Way House"] has penned a story for a third film, involving Schwarzenegger's character from the first film, but at this stage, it hasn't passed hands from writer to studio.

And "Alien vs Predator 2"? You can almost bet on it. Fox are mulling over which way to go with that baby right now. The brain must be aching. Hey, I've an idea, and it shouldn't be too hard to muster : Throw 'Ash' from "Evil Dead" into the mix!

Re: WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Is this the new Jimmy Olson?
Source: Moviehole
You're all probably about as sick of "Superman" rumours - and just because we've got a lead, doesn't mean they end, Not until the whole cast is filled - as Ashlee Simpson is of having tomatoes hurtled at her. but here's another one to throw on the fire.

Shawn Ashmore. He's got the guy that AICN says is in with a shot to play Jimmy Olsen.

Ashmore, currently mixing it up with Elisha Cuthbert on the film "Dot", is best known for his role as 'Ice-Man' in "X-Men 2", a role he'll be reprising for 2006's "X-Men 3".
If he gets the nod to play Clark's Daily Planet buddy, he'll be starring in two comic franchises - one based on a DC character, another on Marvel troops.

Re: WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

"SW3", "Thing", "V" Tidbits
Source: DarkHorizons

News bits of a sci-fi nature have arrived today, here's the collection:

Firstly, a few "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" notes have come in from official sources. The big news on this front is a Force.Net guy has seen a rough cut and will be reviewing it early next week. He's already given some hints away on their messageboards. Anyway onto the main and confirmed stuff:

- General Grievous's ship is called "The Invisible Hand"
- One of the worlds visited is called Utapau
- General Grievous's visit to this planet is mimics the arrival of the Emperor shot in RotJ ( instead of rows of Stormtroopers at attention in the hangarbay, it's rows of battle droid infantry) and it is currently uncertain if that shot will remain.
- A shot similar to the one from 'A New Hope', where Obi-Wan winces when Alderaan is destroyed, but now with Yoda doing the wincing, is in the film.
- 1,367 shots still left to go, out of 2,300, and 23 weeks to do them in.

Next up, Suicide Girls talked with Frank Darabont and the issue of the Sci-Fi Channel's remake of "The Thing" came up. Darabont quickly confirms "It's not a remake as much as it is a miniseries sequel to the great John Carpenter movie. It got reported in the trades as a remake but I would not want to remake a movie as good as John Carpenter's. But to do a loving sequel as a miniseries really does appeal to me. Then you're not screwing up somebody's great movie". The story is being hashed out right now by scribe Dave Johnson, and Darabont hopes it'll pick up right at the end of the Carpenter classic.

Finally 'Clare' says the latest issue of Dreamwatch magazine has a big interview with Kenneth Johnson, who reveals for the first time that he's agreed to write a new remake of alien invasion drama "V". He also says he hasn't given up on the sequel mini-series he wrote & hopes it'll be produced AFTER the remake.
