James Cameron Confirms Battle Angel Alita
Source: ComingSoon!
Titanic and Terminator 2: Judgment Day director James Cameron has confirmed to NPR that he will next helm the big screen adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's anime comic Battle Angel Alita.
"We're in pre-production right now on a project called 'Battle Angel' which is something I've been working on for several years and we're just, we're finishing up the shooting draft right now. We've been designing, it's a big science fiction film and a couple things that will be interesting about this project," he says in the interview.
Cameron added that "the main character, even though it's a live action film, the main character will be done with CG animation and the second thing that's interesting is we're going to be shooting it in 3D using the stereo imagining system that we've been developing for the documentaries."

Hurst Directing House of the Dead Sequel
Source: ComingSoon!
Bloody-Disgusting has learned that director Mike Hurst will helm House of the Dead 2, for which principal photography has begun in California.
The original, which was based on the best-selling video game from Sega, tells the story of a group of college students who go to a rave on a mysterious island and get more than they bargained for when they find themselves stalked by killer zombies and terrifying creatures intent on feasting on the flesh of the living. With only a few weapons and time running out, they take shelter in an ancient house, inside which they will uncover the secrets of the "House of the Dead".
The Lions Gate follow-up was written by Mark Altman, writer of the first film which was directed by Uwe Boll.

The Flash Coming to DVD in 2005
Source: SuperheroHype!
Sci Fi Log reports that The Flash is coming to DVD in 2005 as part of a Warner Bros. TV promotion:
Their promotion, entitled 50 years of Television starts out with Wave 1 on February 8th, these titles will come out at a low price of $29.99. Wave 1 includes Full House and Fresh Prince of Bel Air as well as others. It is unknown which wave that Flash will be or if indeed it will be included, but it would be odd for them to include it in a very limited space if it were not in the works.
The Flash aired on CBS from 1990-1991 and featured John Wesley Shipp as Barry Allen/The Flash & Amanda Pays as Tina McGee.

"Treasure" Squishes "SpongeBob"
Source: E!
Proving that bad reviews don't necessarily bury one's box office, National Treasure dug up a small fortune to top all comers at the megaplex this weekend.
The critically excoriated Jerry Bruckheimer extravaganza, in which Nicolas Cage uses the Declaration of Independence as a map to find a long-buried trove of priceless artifacts, rung up an estimated $35.2 million, per preliminary studio tallies Sunday, to squeeze out The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. The Nickelodeon 'toon absorbed $33.5 in second place.
"The PG rating was a stroke of genius," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations, says of National Treasure. "It allows young teens to be able to go on their own to see something that sounds to them a bit more sophisticated."
The teen crowd, Degarabedian postulates, doesn't really care what critics say, and the Bruckheimer imprimatur ensures plenty of testosterone-fueled action, another plus for the young male set. The Disney flick also had the best per-screen breakdown among the top 10 films, averaging $11,700 per 3,017.
As for SpongeBob, the irrepressible porous yellow sea creature proved a critical darling and a strong player at the megaplex. The PG-rated big-screen version of the popular small-screen show, released by Nickelodeon's corporate sibling Paramount, finished a close second to National Treasure in the per-screen race, with $10,430 at 3,212 theaters.
The newbies' one-two punch bumped Disney-Pixar's The Incredibles down to third place after two weeks on top. But the over-the-hill heroes tale, which earned excellent reviews and has proved to be appealing to audiences of all ages, earned another $26.7 million and has now grossed an incredible $177.8 million. The CG film only dropped off 47 percent from the previous weekend, averaging a solid $7,274 at 3,683 sites.
In its second week, the Yule-themed The Polar Express, starring multiple distortions of Tom Hanks, didn't fall too far off track. The G-rated Warners tale fell from second to fourth with $15.2 million, but that was only a decline of 35 percent. Express, which has now grossed an underwhelming $51 million, averaged $4,168 at 3,650 sites.
Studio suits are undoubtedly pleased with the relatively small drop off and are hoping the film will have legs throughout the holiday season, similar to last year's successful New Line offering, Elf.
"Warner Bros. is clearly hoping it will become a go-to movie when families are together and want to experience something that will get them into the holiday spirit," says Degarabedian. He also discounts some negative reviews, which characterized the film's animation technique as creepy. "Again it's a situation where reviews don't really seem to matter."
Remaining in fifth place for a second week was more adult fare, Universal's R-rated Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. The singleton sequel moved into wide release, adding 1,920 screens to play at 2,450, where its weekend take surged 16 percent to $10.1 million from a $4,122 average. Reason has now earned a very reasonable $21.6 million.
The sun has apparently set on After The Sunset--the heist flick dropped from third to sixth in its second week, stealing away with just $5.2 million. The PG-13 New Line action romance, which teams Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek, has now tallied just $19.2 million.
But The Grudge keeps on scaring up the big bucks. Sony's Sarah Michelle Gellar frightfest, which is already being sequelized, took in $3.8 million in eighth place to take its five-week total to $104.4 million, becoming the 17th film this year to pass the coveted $100 million mark.
Another horror entry did some horrid business. Seed of Chucky fell from fourth to ninth in its second week with just $3.1 million to bring its gross to just $13.3 million.
In limited release, Bad Education, the latest from Spanish director Pedro Amodovar's and starring Gael Garcia Bernel in multiple guises, opened at just three sites. The Sony Pictures Classic averaged a huge $49,122 for $147,366.
Overall,it was another up weekend, more of which are needed if 2004 is going to be considered successful. The top 12 movies totaled $144.8 million, a gain of 8 percent over last weekend and 15 percent over this time last year, when Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat defied bad reviews to open with $38.3 million.
Here is how the top 10 line up, based on estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations; final figures are due Monday:
1. National Treasure, $35.2 million
2. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, $33.5 million
3. The Incredibles, $26.7 million
4. The Polar Express, $15.2 million
5. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, $10.1 million
6. After the Sunset, $5.2 million
7. Ray, $4.6 million
8. The Grudge, $3.8 million
9. Seed of Chucky, $3.1 million
10. Saw, $3 million

SerenityMoved Back to September
Source: ComingSoon!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly creator Joss Whedon has revealed on WHEDONesque that his adaptation of the latter, Serenity, has been pushed back from April 22nd to September 30th. Whedon, who wrote and directed the Universal Pictures feature, says:
Are you guys starting to hear that fanfare? Those distant drums? Are you slapping on your side-arms, pulling on your long brownish-colored coats and thumbing your crisp new bills in anticipation of the cinematic event of the year? Well, it's official: on April 22nd you, the true the blue the loyal, can step right up with the rest of America and WAIT FIVE MORE MONTHS.
Heh. See, sometimes studios shuffle around release dates...
Okay. Don't panic. right now you're panicking. you're thinking, "how could they do this to me?" But what you SHOULD be thinking is: "How could they do this to JOSS?". Seriously. That pity is mine and I want it back.
So what happened? Well, nothing terribly original. April got crowded with a lot of titles aimed at a similar demographic, and the studio decided September was a clearer corridor for the film to make the kind of impact it should. This isn't about a lack of confidence in the film -- in fact, they told me this before they even saw it. And now they have seen it, and unless they're way better liars than I'm used to, they dug it. Actually, they dug it pretty large, which is a good sign since there's not a single finished effect in the film. There's no reworking the end, no reshoots, no "does it have to be in space?". It's just a marketing issue. Now you'll get to watch lots of trailers in the summer. And hopefully, by the time it comes out, other people, people who ain't us, will get a whiff of what we're up to, and come along too.
I love this movie. I HATE waiting to show it too you. I felt pretty much the way I imagine you're feeling right now when they told me. But these guys know what they're doing, and they're trying to protect their investment, not bury it. So I gotta be a grown-up. The release date is September 30th. Hopefully it won't change again.
Spread the word. Keep the faith. And gleam the damn cube already.

Snipes on a Possible Black Panther
Source: SuperheroHype!
Blade: Trinity star Wesley Snipes has been talking on the official site's message board about the possible Black Panther movie adaptation:
I've wanted to do the Black Panther for years now and if the fans want it, I would be honored to bring T'Challa to life. I read the post where Black Panther was the topic and I'd like to say it wouldn't be all that difficult for me to play another comic book character. I've played many cops, dads, hustlers, FBI agents and guys running down the street and more time than not I've been able to create distinctive personalities. It would be a fabulous challenge to animate another black comic book. To make the impossible, possible and the unbelievable, believable is one of the greatest dreams an artist has.

Tom Jane on The Punisher Sequel
Source: SuperheroHype!
Tom Jane tells Comic Book Resources that Lions Gate is currently budgeting The Punisher sequel:
"They're really hot on the sequel since the DVD has sold so well," said Jane. "They're in the process right now of budgeting a sequel. We should have it in the next two weeks, sort of a preliminary budget, and then we'll start talking story, then writer and then we'll get going. I'll be involved in the story development. I probably won't be credited as such, but I'll definitely have input as to what I want to do."

A Sneak Peek at Constantine Footage
Source: SuperheroHype!
Warner Brothers and director Francis Lawrence recently invited a few select people to see twenty-five minutes of footage from Constantine, their upcoming movie based on DC Comics' Hellblazer. For the uninitiated, John Constantine is a mystical detective of sorts, using his wits and mystical abilities to fight demons. The character was created by Alan Moore ("Watchmen," "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen") as the cynical, chain-smoking foil to the Swamp Thing, but the dark nature of the character made him the perfect character to kick-off DC's mature Vertigo Comics line in 1992. Unlike the heroes of other comic book movies, Constantine is not exactly a superhero. He wears a trench coat instead of spandex, and he's not exactly a role model for the kiddies because of the smoking thing.
The movie has been in the works for many years, and diehard fans of the series-of which I am definitely one-might have been skeptical about a dark-haired "yank" taking the place of Moore's blonde Brit from the comics. Since that American actor is Keanu Reeves, the most obvious reference point will obviously be "The Matrix," but having seen this footage, fans might be pleasantly surprised at how much of the flavor and tone of the comic books has been retained. Most of this can be attributed to Lawrence, and Constantine is his first feature film after directing commercials and many music videos for the likes of Aerosmith, Justin, Britney and others.
The footage shown included snippets of varying lengths from the movie including five extra minutes not shown at the San Diego Comic Con; the effects had been further developed, as well. (NOTE: If you have absolutely no interest in knowing anything about what happens in the movie before seeing it, stop reading here. Minor spoilers ahead.)
The footage opener is a moody bit with Keanu capturing cigarette smoke in a glass saying the "welcome to my life" line from the trailer. It then cuts to a desert, possibly in Mexico, where two men discover a creepy underground cave and find an artifact that looks like a spearhead inside. We don't see that again, so its purpose in the story is never clear.
The movie takes its cue from the comic book story "Dangerous Habits", written by Hellblazer fan favorite Garth Ennis, introduced with a scene of Keanu coughing up blood and then visiting a doctor who breaks the bad news that he has cancer. A few minutes later we see Constantine trying to exorcise a "soldier demon" from a little girl, driving home the look and feel of "The Exorcist" evoked by the earlier scene in the desert. This is the first time we see this ugly CGI demon that will appear in other segments, as well as seeing how Constantine uses everyday objects to fight these demons.
A short scene follows between Constantine and his supplier of demon-fighting artifacts including a sly reference to "The Amityville Horror," and then Constantine is sitting by a gas station-smoking, of course-when a crab walks by his foot. Second later, he is fighting off a strange demon made up of insects and crustaceans. (This effect looked the most like it was still in progress.)
Many of the characters from the comics were briefly shown. Tilda ("The Deep End") Swinton plays the fallen angel Gabriel, and Oscar-nominated actor Djimon Honsou plays Papa Midnight, both having dialogue scenes with Constantine. Some of the dialogue sounded a bit corny, but it might have been because it was taken out of context. The oddest casting may be Shia LaBeouf as John's ever-present cab-driving pal Chaz. In this case, he's given the last name Kramer and partakes in LaBeouf's usual wisecracking comic relief, similar to his completely useless character in "I, Robot". He seems a bit too young to play one of the most consistent supporting characters from the Hellblazer books. (One character not shown in the footage was Lucifer, but Lawrence mentioned that the popular character is being played by quirky Swedish character actor Peter Stormare.)
Rachel Weisz's character Angela Dodson is introduced in a scene where she is researching John Constantine on the Internet. When they meet, we learn that she needs his help in finding out why her twin sister committed suicide. After an encounter with flying demons similar to the earlier one exorcised from the little girl, Constantine's investigation takes him to hell where we see more of these ugly creatures sneaking up behind him. (The effects in these last two scenes were very good, comparable to those in "Pitch Black".)
After this, there's a short sequence with Constantine facing a rather dapper demon named Balthazar, played by singer Gavin Rosdale from the rock band Bush. Cut to Constantine and Dodson walking down a hall after that confrontation, when she is suddenly grabbed and ripped through the entire office building as Constantine chases after her. In the teaser you can see a bit of that scene, but it's more impressive when you see it in its entirety with Keanu chasing after her.
One of the last scenes has Constantine standing in front of a group of people in a room. He uses his cigarette to set off a sprinkler, apparently filled with holy water, and as they're exposed as demons, they attack him in a scene that could have been taken directly from Blade, with Keanu blasting them apart with a crucifix shaped gun.
The footage ended with a sequence showing Constantine as a boy on a bus where he sees his first demon in a moment right out of "The Sixth Sense," although it was unclear where in the movie this scene may happen.
Probably the best thing about the footage is that we see Keanu Reeves playing Constantine a lot looser than he did Neo in "The Matrix" movies. The cynical humor of the characters suits him better than one might expect, and he doesn't seem to be taking himself quite as seriously.
Overall, the movie looks quite good. It's darker, moodier and more character-driven than most comic book based movies--some scenes even looked like they were an attempt to create film noir-- but there is a good amount of action and scares to keep things from getting boring. It's hard to determine how the story might play out because the sequences were so short, making it hard to get into the mood, but the effects and action look solid, and it should make the movie an entertaining experience even to those unfamiliar to the character.
Constantine will open on February 18, 2005.

Screenwriter on Transformers movie
Source: Moviehole
Really keen to see what they do with this "Transformers" movie. It could be another "Final Fantasy" (Email from Alec Baldwin : Screw you Hole-boy), but all indications point towards something a little grander. The names attached - Steven Spielberg, for one - are a gleaming good sign for starters. And if they can get Tom Hanks involved - he is keen, he is a fan, he is currently playing a tyke after all - so clearly not fussy - they've got the 89-year old voting community of the Oscars too. Stranger things have happened at the Kodak Theatre (Hello "Shakespeare in Love" Best Film!).
IGN FilmForce had the pleasure of talking to John Rogers, screenwriter, about the film. Here's what he had to say :
IGN FILMFORCE: How did the Transformers gig come about for you?
JOHN ROGERS: I have two other movies in development at DreamWorks. After reading my stuff, Mr. Spielberg asked if I would take a shot at it. There aren't a lot of guys for whom giant robots don't involve a rather large learning curve, so again, my geek lifestyle gets me in ...
IGNFF: What drew you to the world of Transformers? Were you a fan of it beforehand?
ROGERS: I was a big fan as a kid. It was one of those tricks of age that once I grew out of it as a toy, I kind of assumed it no longer existed. It was a bit of a shock to find out they're still such major cultural icons. My new hobby is collecting ads from around the world starring cars transforming into funky robots. It's amazing how many there are. From a writing standpoint, what drew me to it was the chance to write wide-screen fights on a scale not often done in Hollywood, and also cool human characters faced with such bizarre revelations.
IGNFF: Your background is in science. Will you be drawing on any of that for this project or is it all going to be strictly make-believe?
ROGERS: Dude. Energon crystal. Seriously.
IGNFF: Finally, what can we expect from the human characters in this story? Anything you can reveal about what they do or who they are?
ROGERS: It's a big-scale movie. Ordinary humans who discover the robots, scientists who tinker with That What Must Not Be Tinkered With, and cool soldier-types
teaming up with our new Autobot friends. The name "Witwicky" will be spoken. Even now, I say too much.

Will Winegardner write The Godfather 4?
Source: Moviehole
Paramount have been planning to get a "Godfather 4" off the ground for a couple of years now, but they ultimatelty waited for the release of the recent book "The Godfather Returns" for inspiration. Whether they're going to get it or not is another question : the book, from writer Mark Winegardner, is getting some pretty mixed reviews. But then, how does one compete with the golden touch of Puzo anyway? Heck, those that do like it, probably don't want to whack their hand up and admit it.
Winegardner won't be the man responsible for penning the fourth chapter in the film series. He's leaving his involvement at the book.
"Movies are such a collaborative process," he said. "If you're a screenwriter, it's like being a plumber. I'd rather remain a novelist, where you're in control of everything. You're the director; you're the actors; you're God. Who wants to relinquish the role of God?", he tells tallahassee.com.
"The Godfather Returns" sees Michael ignoring an understanding with the Chicago mob and moves his family's interests westward to take control of Lake Tahoe, where he believes the family can someday become legitimate. Fredo, Tom Hagen and Johnny Fontane are key support characters.
Interestingly, plans for the film version of "Godfather 4" originally included Andy Garcia, who would reprise his role from the third film as Vincent Mancini. If Paramount does decide to use "The Godfather Returns" for the basis of its next movie - and it just may, it opens up some interesting casting possibilities - it's likely that Garcia and anyone else associated post-Godfather II, since it would be a prequel, would no longer be required.
At one stage, there were rumours that it might film in Melbourne, Australia.

U2 'Bombs' Brooklyn With Surprise Show
Source: Billboard
Fresh from taping "Saturday Night Live" here over the weekend, U2 stuck around New York today (Nov. 22) to usher in its new Interscope album, "How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," in typically grand fashion. The Irish rock act drove through Manhattan performing on a flatbed truck as stunned passerby looked on, culminating in an hour-plus free concert on the Brooklyn side of the East River for thousands of lucky fans.
Highlights from the gig will air Dec. 8 on MTV, while other footage from the day will be used in a video for the power-chord laden album track "All Because of You."
The group kicked things off at dusk with the new album's first single, "Vertigo," which has spent four weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. Frontman Bono proclaimed "All Because of You" to be "a love song to the Who," and saluted the band's paraplegic childhood friend Christopher Nolan prior to the emotive "Miracle Drug."
Before "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own," Bono paid tribute to his late father Bob, who he recalled "conducting the stereo with my mom's knitting needles." With a gorgeous view of the Manhattan skyline behind it, the group then stormed through "City of Blinding Lights," one of the best tracks on the new album.
Bono handled guitar duties while the Edge played piano on "Original of the Species," which got a huge roar from the crowd beforehand. "How do you know this sh*t?," the vocalist wryly asked the crowd, a reference to the unknown fate of the CD of unfinished new tracks that went missing this summer.
The folksy "She's a Mystery to Me," penned by U2 around the time of "The Joshua Tree" but eventually recorded by Roy Orbison, was followed by thunderous renditions of "Beautiful Day" and the classic "I Will Follow," which found the audience shouting along with every word. The encore sported an even older item, U2's first single, "Out of Control," plus a second pass at "Vertigo."
"How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" will be released tomorrow in North America. Along with a standard CD, it will also be available on vinyl, as well as two CD editions with a bonus DVD featuring footage of U2 in the studio plus performances of three songs. The deluxe version will house the CD and DVD in a 48-page hardbound book.
U2 will kick off a world tour March 1 in Miami.
