Ellen DeGeneres to Remake Oh, God!
Source: ComingSoon!
Actress, comedian, and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres (Mr. Wrong, Finding Nemo) is set to star in a remake of the 1977 comedy Oh, God! for producer Jerry Weintraub. Variety says DeGeneres will play the title character, a role originally played by George Burns.

Weintraub produced the original film, which also starred John Denver and spawned two sequels. Weintraub told the trade that he could never figure out how to remake a film in a way that would flatter the original. Then he was approached by Ellen and was impressed by her take.

"Ellen is a strong comedienne and she has always done material about God and questions about God," said Weintraub. "She will help us with the writing, and using her will allow us to do a proper 2005 view of 'Oh God!' that is hip and modern."

Weintraub will look to hire a writer and director so they can shoot the film during DeGeneres' talk show hiatus next summer.

Source: ComingSoon!
NBC has given a series commitment to a defense-themed drama from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, says The Hollywood Reporter. A search is under way for a writer for the project, which is set in the Pentagon.

Jerry Bruckheimer TV has six series that all air on CBS: the three "CSI" series, Without a Trace, Cold Case and the reality show The Amazing Race.

Jerry Bruckheimer TV and Warner Bros. TV are producing the new drama with Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman executive producing.

Terence Winter to Write The Warriors Remake
Source: ComingSoon!
Paramount and MTV Films have hired Terence Winter, Emmy-nominated four times for The Sopranos scripts, to pen helmer Tony Scott's remake of The Warriors, reports Variety. The film is an updated version of Paramount's 1979 action film, directed by Walter Hill.

The trade says the project is envisioned as having a heightened reality compared to the original, which was set in New York City. As in the original, the plot will center on the Warriors gang being wrongly accused of assassinating a rival gang leader during a truce and being forced to make their way home through hostile territory.

Writers John Glenn and Travis Wright were first aboard to pen the "Warriors" update, followed by Joel Wyman.

Odd Lot & Batfilm Team on The Spirit
Source: ComingSoon!
Odd Lot Entertainment has acquired the rights to produce a feature film based on seminal superhero comic book, Will Eisner's The Spirit, in partnership with Batfilm Productions. Odd Lot's Gigi Pritzker and Deborah Del Prete (Hooligans, The Wedding Planner) will produce the picture along with Batfilm's Michael Uslan (Batman Begins, Catwoman, Constantine). Executive Producers will be Benjamin Melniker and Steve Maier. Co-Producers will be F.J. DeSanto and Linda McDonough.

Will Eisner's The Spirit was created in 1940 and is the story of a masked detective – believed to be dead and operating out of a wildwood cemetery – who fights crime in Central City with his fists, cunning (a tongue-in-cheek sense of the absurd), and unbelievable tolerance for punishment. The property is considered by many fans and comic book historians to be the best creative work ever to come from the comic book industry in the last 70 years. Will Einser is the comic-genre master storyteller, whose name graces the comic industry's most prestigious awards each year at Comicon – The Eisner Awards.

Will Eisner, currently living in Florida, says, "I'm pleased to see that a film adaptation of 'The Spirit' will be produced by so experienced a creative team as Michael, Deborah and Gigi. This is an important event in the history of the comic book character, with which I have been closely identified." The intention for the adaptation is to create a handsomely crafted, stylized, character-driven tale. Additionally, it is a perfect match for the visual medium of film as Eisner's drawings were groundbreaking in incorporating cinematic camera angles and atmospheric lighting effects.

Exorcist Bedevils Box Office
Source: E!

Give the devil his due. Exorcist: The Beginning possessed the megaplexes this weekend, scaring up an estimated $18.1 million.

The seemingly cursed production--which went through three directors, several casting changes and nearly two entire shoots before finally hitting theaters this weekend--was excoriated by critics, who had to wait until Friday to review the flick because Warner Bros. decided not to hold preview screenings.

That seemed like a smart tactic--the Ebert set ripped the Renny Harlin-directed film for its cheesy F/X and cheap scares. But because the thumbs-down came late, it took a day for audiences to catch on. The R-rated film, starring Stellan Skarsgard as the young Father Merrin as he first faces down the demon who eventually made Linda Blair spit up pea soup and spin her head around in the 1973 classic The Exorcist (Max Von Sydow played the elder Merrin in the original), did its best business Friday night and dropped off dramatically Saturday and Sunday. All told, it averaged $6,484 per screen at 2,803 sites.

And the $18.1 million is a far cry from the $40 million the prequel's producer said he needed on opening weekend for the budget-bursting movie to break even.

By comparison, the relatively cheap Without a Paddle, a male-bonding comedy with a Deliverance-esque theme, drifted in with $13.7 million in second and is well on its way to turning a profit.

The PG-13 Paramount release, in which Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard leave the city for a treasure-hunting trip in the wilderness, opened in 2,730 theaters, averaging $5,018 per site.

The dog days are in full effect in moviedom. Box-office tallies were down 16 percent from last weekend, according to receipt tracker Exhibitor Relations.

Last week's topper, Alien vs. Predator, dropped a whopping 67 percent, falling from first to fourth in its second weekend with $12.5 million. The Fox franchise flick has now grossed $63 million

One of the few brights spot in the current release roster is The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Disney's tween-skewing romantic comedy dropped one spot to third but only lost 43 percent of its business, earning $13.1 million to bring its two-week gross to $61.3 million.

Suffering the worst crash of all was Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie, which tumbled 70 percent, down from fourth place to 11th, earning a skimpy $2.8 million its second weekend. The Warners release has now grossed $15.1 million.

After opening in limited release three weeks ago, Lions Gate low-budget shark thriller Open Water expanded to 2,709 sites, where it earned $11.7 million in fifth place. The R-rated Sundance sensation, inspired by a true story of abandoned scuba divers, averaged $4,337 per site and has now earned $14.8 million.

Another art-house fave, Garden State, continued to blossom. Moving into 652 sites, Zack Braff's homegrown movie gained 131 percent, jumping from 13th to 10th place with $3.2 million, bringing its four-week total to $6.6 million.

In limited release the top attraction was Bright Young Things, an adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's satirical novel about irresponsible young Brits in pre-World War II London high society featuring a stellar British cast and directed by Stephen Fry. At just three sites, the Think Film release, averaged $17,833 to tally $53,500.

At four sites, Mean Creek, an R-rated Paramount Classics drama about some messed up kids who take a punishing boat trip, averaged $7,559 for $30,236.

And playing in 10 theaters, the PG-13 Samuel Goldwyn Films release Rosenstrasse, a look back at the tragedies of the Holocaust directed by Margarethe Von Trotta, averaged $5,030 for $50,300.

At 96 sites the R-rated Arenas release Nicotina, a Mexican caper starring Diego Luna as a computer hacker hoping crime will buy romance, averaged $5,052 for $485,000.

Although the box office was down from last weekend, the $102.8 million racked up by the top 12 films was a 21 percent improvement over this time last year, when no new challengers could keep Freddy vs. Jason from repeating at number one.

Here's a recap of the top 10 films based on Sunday estimates; final figures are due Monday:

1. Exorcist: The Beginning, $18.1 million
2. Without a Paddle, $13.7 million
3. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, $13.1 million
4. Alien vs. Predator, $12.5 million
5. Open Water, $11.7 million
6. Collateral, $10.5 million
7. The Bourne Supremacy, $6.6 million
8. The Manchurian Candidate, $4.2 million
9. The Village, $3.6 million
10. Garden State, $3.2 million

Man-Thing Won't be Seen this Year
Source: SuperheroHype!
We thought this would be happening, considering Lions Gate Films had not listed Man-Thing on their schedule for the Fall. Now FilmJerk confirms that Lions Gate and Marvel Studios have taken the low-budget comic book adaptation of off their 2004 schedule and given it the dreaded "to be announced".

Will it ever make it to theaters, or perhaps direct-to-DVD?

Wayans Bringing Munsters Back to Life
Source: ComingSoon!

Keenen Ivory, Shawn and Marlon Wayans have made a deal with Universal Pictures to write and produce a modern-day take on The Munsters for Universal Pictures, reports Variety.

The Wayans brothers don't intend to star in the film, which will give Herman, Lily, Grandpa, Marilyn and Eddie Munster a new lease on life. Keenen Ivory may direct the film.

Produced by Universal Television from 1964-66, The Munsters is the story of a suburban family that resembles an assortment of 1930s movie monsters and can't understand why they always seem to frighten the neighbors.

Ashanti, Latifah & Tarantino in Muppets Movie
Source: ComingSoon!

Singer/actress Ashanti is set and Queen Latifah is in final talks to star in ABC's original movie tentatively titled The Muppets' Wizard of Oz. Also set to appear in the Muppet take on the classic L. Frank Baum novel is Quentin Tarantino, who will play himself.

Kirk R. Thatcher, who directed NBC's successful Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie in 2002, is on board to helm the family film, which will air as part of the Wonderful World of Disney franchise.

No Progress on the Metroid Movie
Source: ComingSoon!
Producer Yoshio Sakamoto says that not much is happening on the Metroid movie front.

Back in April, it was announced that John Woo had optioned Nintendo's best-selling video game franchise for the big screen. Woo would produce the sci-fi movie and has the option to direct. The plan was to release the first film in the franchise before 2006.

Sakamoto tells Nintendo Dream magazine that there are actually no plans at the current time for the movie to begin production.

"There's been no progress [with the movie]," comments the game's producer. "There were some misleading reports before the E3 that Metroid's production was confirmed. But to be accurate, it's that the company that John Woo works for has gained the rights to negotiate with Nintendo of America to make Metroid into a movie. Metroid's production hasn't been officially decided yet, and there's no release plans for it."

Reports said the movie will center on the origins of the game's female protagonist, sexy bounty hunter Samus Aran, and relate her adventures battling the insidious life-sucking Metroids and their controlling force, Mother Brain.

The Untouchables Prequel Writers Named
Source: ComingSoon!
Paramount has hired screenwriters David Levien and Brian Koppelman - who just rewrote Brett Ratner's Josiah's Canon - to write The Untouchables: Capone Rising a prequel to the 1987 film to be directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, King Arthur).

The film will center on Capone and the early version of Irish cop Jimmy Malone, who is as crooked as every other Chicago cop until Capone becomes king of the underworld.

"The film starts on the eve of Capone's arrival, and while Malone wasn't the most corrupt cop, he operated at a time when every cop was on the take," Levien told the trade. "Once he crosses paths with Capone, he sees a level of violence and criminality that causes him to have a moral awakening."

"This period of Capone's life hasn't been done since the movies of the '40s and '50s," Koppelman added. "Sherry Lansing and Donald De Line said feel free to come up with the most compelling, dark, violent and complicated guy you've ever seen."
