KORN To Release 'Take A Look In The Mirror' In November - Sep. 13, 2003

KORN plan to release their sixth album, "Take A Look In The Mirror", in November.

"We've got that spark in us again," frontman Jonathan Davis told Rolling Stone. "This is a really aggressive record. More edgy. The last record we were experimenting. This album is back down to the basics and heavy grooves and getting people pumped. You'll have a lot of screaming on this one."

Davis continued, "I don't scream just for the sake of screaming. When we sit down to write, we just write whatever comes out. I was going through some rough times. It's basically about relationships and fuckin' hate."

The band, working without a producer for the first time, recorded 10 songs before setting off on this summer's Ozzfest tour, and will return return to the studio to record two or three more. "It was time for us to do our own [record]," Davis said. "It's been really great, really kicked back. It's not like being in the sterile environment of a regular studio. We can kick back, jump in my swimming pool, whatever we want to do."

"There's a song called 'Everything I Know'," Davis revealed, "that's about when you're fighting with your girl, and how when you've been together for so long, things can just get shitty . . . And then there's ones about people I just cannot stand and want to kill. I have a real problem with people."

Also set to appear on the album is a track called "Right Now". Said Davis, "That's a song about waking up and wanting to kill everybody."

Re: WEEKLY MUSIC NEWS

Various Cash CD, Video Projects Due

Purely coincidentally and unrelated to his death today (Sept. 12), several Johnny Cash audio and video projects will be released in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday, Columbia Legacy will release a 12-track collection, "Christmas With Johnny Cash." The set features the legendary country artist performing such traditional favorites as "I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day," "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World."

On Sept. 23, Eagle Rock Entertainment will issue "Johnny Cash, A Concert: Behind Prison Walls" on CD and DVD/VHS. Shot in 1976, the film features shows Cash performing for inmates at Nashville's Tennessee State Penitentiary accompanied by Linda Rondstadt and Roy Clark.

The latest edition in the Starbucks Coffee Company/Hear Music series "Artist's Choice" series was assembled by Cash. The set features tracks by Eddy Arnold, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Glenn Campbell and Mahalia Jackson, among others, with comments on each in the liner notes.

For album opener, Hank Williams' "Lovesick Blues," Cash wrote: "We came to a point, my voice teacher and I, where she was ready to throw up her hands because I was not going to budge from the way I was singing. And she said, 'Okay, sing something you like.' So I sang Hank Williams' 'Lovesick Blues.' And she put down her books and closed them up and said, 'Don't ever let anybody try to give you voice lessons again.' And so that was the beginning of my professional career, I guess."

The 14-track compilation is currently available exclusively through Hear Music and Starbucks outlets in the U.S. and Canada. It will be available beginning Sept. 23 via traditional retailers.

As previously reported, Cash and producer Rick Rubin had been working on a box set that may see release before Christmas. Tentatively titled "Unearthed," the collection will most likely span five discs, four of which will be composed entirely of previously unreleased material. The fifth disc would be a compilation of tracks highlighting past four Cash studio albums, each recorded and produced by Rubin for his American Recordings label.

The previously unreleased material will come from recording sessions for the four "American Recordings" albums Cash released over the past decade. It's also possible that more recently recorded fare could make the set, as Rubin told Billboard.com last month he and Cash had began working on songs after his wife, June Carter Cash, died in May.

"He kind of made a decision," Rubin said. "He called me a couple of days after June passed and said that he really has dedicated his life to work and wants to be busy all the time and focused on songs. That's what he wants to do, so that's what we're going to do [and] that's what we've been doing."

Not surprising...

BILLY CORGAN Says ZWAN Are No More - Sep. 15, 2003

Former SMASHING PUMPKINS frontman Billy Corgan has confirmed that his latest band, ZWAN, are no more, according to Dotmusic.com.

Speaking to U.S. radio station WGN-Ch 9, Corgan said he had disbanded the group, suggesting that the experience had became mundane.

"My heart was in SMASHING PUMPKINS," he explained. "I really enjoyed my experience with ZWAN, but at the end of the day, without that sense of deeper family loyalty, it just becomes like anything else."

He added: "Our attitude with the PUMPKINS was, it was a do or die proposition, and that got us through all the hard times we went through, particularly with the PUMPKINS where we had two members with serious drug problems."

ZWAN, who formed in 2000, released one critically acclaimed album, "Mary, Star Of The Sea", in February 2003. That set has gone on to sell over 270,000 copies in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Corgan is expected to focus on solo material. He is also due to showcase his first book of poetry in his hometown of Chicago this week (September 17).

Available only online through Vai.com, the 10-CD "Secret Jewel Box Set" is a collection of rarities, bonus tracks and film soundtrack pieces. "The Elusive Light And Sound Vol. 1", a culmination of music composed for film, was released through Favored Nations in June of 2002. "Archives Vol. 2 - Original Recordings of Frank Zappa", is only available through the site as a part of the full package.

The Box ships with three discs inside ("The Elusive Light and Sound Vol. 1", "Alcatrazz Disturbing the Peace", and "Archives Vol. 2 - Original Recordings of Frank Zappa") and the remaining 7 CDs will be released and sold separately over the next couple of years. MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx has told the German edition of Metal Hammer that talks are underway between the group's management and MTV about a possible "mtvICON" event to help raise the profile of the band in the months leading up to the release of the movie version of CRÜE's best-selling band autobiography, "The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band", and subsequent farewell tour.

U2 Heads 'Home' On DVD

A Sept. 1, 2001, concert at Ireland's Slane Castle is the basis for the upcoming DVD release "U2 Go Home." Due Nov. 18 via Interscope, the title finds the band performing 19 songs in front of more than 160,000 people in its homeland. The show was one of two at the outdoor venue that marked the close of the band's Elevation world tour in support of 2000's "All That You Can't Leave Behind."

Three audio selections on the DVD offer the music in PCM Stereo, DTS and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound Aspect ratio 16:9. The DVD also features a documentary on the making of the band's 1984 album "The Unforgettable Fire," which was recorded at Slane Castle. The feature has been remastered for this release.

In addition, the DVD acts as a DVD ROM that includes a U2 calendar, screensavers and Web links, as well as a "Spincam" feature that provides the viewer an interactive, 360 degree view of three songs from the concert.

"U2 Go Home" continues the veteran band's tradition of concert films that began with 1983's "Under a Blood Red Sky," shot at Colorado's dramatic Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The theatrical documentary/concert film "Rattle and Hum" followed in 1988. The band has also released "Zoo TV: Live From Sydney" (1994), "Popmart" (1998) and last year's "Elevation Tour: Live From Boston."

U2 is working on its next studio album and is expected to tour next year, according to sources.

Here is the "U2 Go Home" DVD track list:

"Elevation"
"Beautiful Day"
"Until the End of the World"
"New Year's Day"
"Out of Control"
"Sunday Bloody Sunday"
"Wake Up Dead Man"
"Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of"
"Kite"
"Angel of Harlem"
"Desire"
"Staring at the Sun"
"All I Want Is You"
"Where the Streets Have No Name"
"Pride (In the Name Of Love)"
"Bullet the Blue Sky"
"With or Without You"
"One"
"Walk On"
