NINE INCH NAILS' DANNY LOHNER Comments On TAPEWORM Project - Sep. 27, 2003

NINE INCH NAILS' Danny Lohner recently spoke to Kerrang! magazine about his TAPEWORM project, the semi-mythical supergroup that has, in five or so years since its inception, featured contributions from NIN mastermind Trent Reznor, A PERFECT CIRCLE/TOOL frontman Maynard Keenan and PANTERA's Phil Anselmo. Lohner insists that TAPEWORM remains a separate entity from his other projects — it currently features himself, Reznor, Keenan and former 12 ROUNDS drummer Atticus Ross — although he admits his frustration that it has never seen the light of day.

"I know, man, it's a joke," he sighed. "It's painfully close to being finished. We've got a whole TAPEWORM album ready to mix. What happens is that we do the songs, then everybody has to go off and do their own thing. We actually got to a point during the last TOOL tour, where we were all really focused, and we were planning to get the record out by Christmas 2002. Then we got into some legal scenario — Maynard was signed to one label, Trent to another, blah blah blah to cut a long story short we ended up shelving it yet again."

With TAPEWORM still on hold, Lohner is gearing up to start work on the long-awaited follow up to NINE INCH NAILS' 1999 masterpiece "The Fragile" ("I just spoke to Trent the other day," he said. "I'm going down to New Orleans to catch up with him and see where it's at.") And he's not ruling out hooking up with ex-LIMP BIZKIT guitarist Wes Borland and FILTER frontman Richard Patrick (his collaborators on the "Underworld" soundtrack) again.

"I'd love to work with Wes and Rich in the future," he says. "I'd love to get in a van and tour the country, just like the old days. Play the clubs that we played when we were coming up. That'd be cool."

JUDAS PRIEST Guitarist Discusses Early Rivalry With IRON MAIDEN - Sep. 27, 2003

In a recent interview with Germany's Rock Hard magazine, JUDAS PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing addressed former IRON MAIDEN singer Paul Di'Anno's claim in his autobiography that he was the main reason for the old feelings of rivalry that existed between MAIDEN and PRIEST during the early '80s.

"Paul apologized personally to me — what a great gesture," Downing said. "But he wasn't the main reason for the rivalry. At the time of 'British Steel', PRIEST was the bigger band and MAIDEN was the supporting act. They were saying that they [would] blow us off the stage without any problem — well, I thought their behavior wasn't very nice. I'd have loved to send them home to take another band with us, [one] who would have appreciated the chance. But we were told not to do it as it would have looked like we were frightened by them. So we kept on going...but they were very arrogant. And I remember the main rehearsal before the tour when there were a few guys hanging around in the room who didn't say a word and watched everything we did — every step we made and every move of the stage lights. I wasn't very pleased and asked the guitar tech to tell the guys to leave the place. Don't get me wrong: I'm not too good not to play in front of the supporting band — but they could have asked, at least, if it was OK to attend the rehearsal. We went on tour and they didn't blow us off the stage, of course. Hahahah. I watched quite a lot of the MAIDEN shows, but the reaction of the audience wasn't very explosive — because the fans were waiting for us. OK, MAIDEN became one of the biggest bands of the metal scene — and I'm proud of them. We made a big mistake by focusing more on the U.S. than on Europe after releasing 'British Steel'. [I mean], we lost a lot of attention at home. In the U.S., we were quite big — and MAIDEN asked us for a support slot on our U.S. tour. We said yes — and the same old story happened again. It had a lot to do with rivalry and jealousy."

When asked what he would say to MAIDEN mainman Steve Harris if they bumped into each other, K.K. said, "I'd buy him a beer — because it's an old story. Like I already said, I'm proud of what MAIDEN achieved and of what they did for the British metal. It might sound stupid — but it's true."

Re: WEEKLY MUSIC NEWS

Pearl Jam is eschewing a comprehensive DVD of its 2003 Riot Act tour in favor of spotlighting one particularly noteworthy show from the trek. The double-disc "Live at the Garden," capturing the band's July 8 performance at New York's Madison Square Garden, will arrive Nov. 11 via Epic. On the same day, the label will issue a long-in-the-works set of rarities, although no information on that collection has yet been confirmed.

The sold-out July 8 show came at the tail end of the three-month tour and found Pearl Jam unleashing a 30-song, nearly three-hour set. Highlights included a guest appearance by Ben Harper on "Daughter" and "Indifference," the band's only third-ever performance of the pre-Pearl Jam act Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns" and a furious run through the Who's "Baba O'Riley" with all of the arena lights turned on.

The concert went on for so long that Pearl Jam faced a several thousand dollar fine for breaking an 11 p.m. curfew. Frontman Eddie Vedder told the crowd that the stage floor was literally shaking from the audience volume, a feat venue officials said had only ever happened at performances by Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead and Iron Maiden. The venue later waived the curfew violation fine.

Bonus features on the DVD include a 5.1 audio mix and a video for the controversial "Riot Act" track "Bu$hleaguer." "Live at the Garden" was shot by Liz Burns, Steve Gordon and Kevin Shuss, the same team that collaborated on the 2000 tour DVD "Touring Band 2000."

As previously reported, Pearl Jam will return to the concert stage Oct. 25 at Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit outside of San Francisco.

Here is the "Live at the Garden" track list:

"Love Boat Captain"
"Last Exit"
"Save You"
"Green Disease"
"In My Tree"
"Cropduster"
"Even Flow"
"Gimme Some Truth"
"I Am Mine"
"Low Light"
"Faithfull"
"Wishlist"
"Lukin"
"Grievance"
"1/2 Full"
"Black"
"Spin The Black Circle"
"Rearviewmirror"
"You Are"
"Thumbing My Way"
"Daughter" (with Ben Harper)
"Crown of Thorns"
"Breath"
"Better Man"
"Do the Evolution"
"Crazy Mary"
"Indifference" (with Ben Harper)
"Sonic Reducer" (with the Buzzcocks' Tony Barber)
"Baba O'Riley"
"Yellow Ledbetter"

JANE'S ADDICTION Guitarist Says He Was 'Shocked' By ROLLING STONE Slight - Sep. 29, 2003

Liisa Ladouceur of The Toronto Eye recently spoke with JANE'S ADDICTION guitarist Dave Navarro about the fact that Navarro didn't make it onto Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. "I was shocked, until I found out that Slash wasn't in there either," Dave said. "So I don't feel so bad. As far as living legends go, I think he's at the top of his game. I've played with him and worked with him and he's a mind-blowing guitar player." The remark brought up JANE'S' perceived rivalry with GUNS N' ROSES in the mid-'80s, which Navarro says never really was. "There was a perception that there was a GUNS/JANE'S rivalry. There really wasn't," Navarro insisted. "We just came from different worlds. They were from the Sunset Strip rocker world. We were from the alternative world. We were both coming up at the same time and I think there were times when they wanted to do shows with us but we wanted to keep it on a more alternative level. Since then, JANE'S has learned that there is a musical community and it's unnecessary to have rivals in something as sacred as creativity."

RONNIE JAMES DIO Loses Thumb While Gardening! - Sep. 30, 2003

According to KNAC.com, about two weeks ago while gardening at his home, legendary metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio had a pretty bad accident. As something fell over in the garden, he apparently tried to catch it, and in doing so, his thumb was severed off. Doctors were able to re-attach it, and Dio is reportedly doing fine.

As previously reported, DIO's "Sacred Heart" concert video from 1986 is scheduled to be reissued on DVD in February 2004 through Warner Strategic Marketing. Featured on the disc will be bonus footage including interviews with current band members Dio, Craig Goldy, Simon Wright and Jimmy Bain. The band will reportedly discuss the "Sacred Heart" tour, the recent "Stand Up and Shout: Dio Anthology" CD release and the group's forthcoming album.

Re: WEEKLY MUSIC NEWS

Is Broadway ready for Ozzy Osbourne? The Prince of Darkness tells MTV News he's writing a Broadway musical about one of Czarist Russia's most notorious figures, Rasputin, the megalomaniacal monk whose baleful influence on the family of Nicholas II helped inspire the Russian Revolution that overthrew the czars in 1917.

Ozzy says he's recording the songs for the show in a new studio built at the Osbournes' famous Beverly Hills home, and that he'll release the tunes on an independent-label CD. ''We don't like record labels,'' wife and manager Sharon Osbourne told MTV. Making a wet raspberry, she added, ''[Poop] on record labels.'' ''Especially Epic," chimed in daughter Kelly, who, like her dad, was recently dropped from the label. ''Easy,'' said son Jack, who still works as a talent scout for Epic.

Ozzy's reps told MTV that more details about the musical would be forthcoming. Meanwhile, we suggest that Ozzy use some songs already in his catalogue to dramatize the unkillable cleric's life, like ''Paranoid'' and ''Iron Man.''

This smells like "damage-control" to me.....

LIMP BIZKIT Singer Says The Group's New Album Is 'Not An Instant Smash Record' - Sep. 30, 2003

LIMP BIZKIT frontman Fred Durst has posted the following message to the band's official web site:

"Hey there everybody. It's me, Fred. I have had no time to come in the site yet until now. I have been traveling like a mofo. I hope you like what me, [and webmasters/designers] Tazl, and Ben have done with the new site. It is still a work in progress as you can see, but it wasn't fair to keep you waiting any longer.

"I am curious to see you in person to feel how you are feeling about ['Results May Vary']. as you know it is only the first part of our journey since we've recorded over thirty songs. So sink your teeth into this one while you can.

"As you have probably noticed we have been on MTV a lot these pass [sic] couple of weeks. The show launch was a lot of information for those who can't handle the truth, but for those that can it was a way to bring you the most raw form of us as best we could without actually being with you. Those cameras were there ALL THE FUCKING TIME!! To see over a year and a half crammed into five episodes is mind boggling. There were a lot of things you didn't see between the lines and a lot of the things you did see. If you didn't get a chance to see it then it will be on this weekend. Like our album it is very personal, sincere, and real. Those things tend to scare people away who cannot relate to sincerity and reality. I can't figure out if I am stoked to be so revealed or just another victim of my own decisions.

"['Results May Vary'] is not an instant 'smash' record. It is an album that will take time to sink in. The words have a much deeper than they read on the first time or two. Things will start speaking to you the more you listen. Something about it has kept me listening over and over again. For example, 'Underneath The Gun' is about suicide and the struggle you can have when ending your life becomes an option. If it weren't for creativity and the hope for true love it would have been much more of an option more often. It's those types of dark moments in life that I have learned and grown from. I continue to evolve each new second that floats by me. Think about it. Give it another listen when you are in an absorbing frame of mind.

"As the worlds turns, so do feelings and beliefs. Life and love are the most powerful things in the universe. Doesn't mean either one is good or bad thing, but equally both.

"The site is on its way!! Life is just beginning for all of us. Don't ever let anyone get in your way."

Re: WEEKLY MUSIC NEWS

Pearl Jam will trot out 31 rare and previously unreleased tracks from its archives on the long-in-the-works collection "Lost Dogs." As first reported here, the two-disc set will be issued Nov. 11 by Epic, on the same day as the double-disc DVD "Live at the Garden."
"Lost Dogs" is a veritable treasure-trove for Pearl Jam fans, as it includes 11 songs that have never been released in any form. Among them are "All Night," which appeared on preliminary track lists for the 1996 album "No Code"; the "Binaural"-era outtakes "In the Moonlight," "Fatal," "Sweet Lew" and "Education"; and several songs of unknown origin, such as "Sad," "Hitchhiker" and "Don't Gimme No Lip."

"I guess it's still one of my early '90s riffs," drummer Matt Cameron tells Billboard.com of "In the Moonlight," which he wrote. "It's very grungry and slow."

The album is rounded out by studio B-sides spanning the group's 13-year career, from early favorites such as "Alone," "Wash," "Footsteps" and "Dirty Frank" to more recent fare such as "U," "Down" and "Undone." An appearance by longtime concert closer "Yellow Ledbetter" is set, and "Lost Dogs" will host the vintage outtake "Hard To Imagine," which appeared on the 1998 Loosegroove soundtrack to "Chicago Cab" but never on a Pearl Jam studio release.

"Lost Dogs" also collects tracks from Pearl Jam's numerous compilation and benefit album appearances, such as 1996's "Gremmie Out of Control" and 1999's "Whale Song," from the "Music for Our Mother Ocean" compilations and a cover of the High Numbers' "Leaving Here" from 1996's "Home Alive" benefit. A 1999 cover of J. Frank Wilson's "Last Kiss," which at No. 2 is the highest-charting Billboard Hot 100 single of Pearl Jam's career, makes the cut as well.

Several cuts are featured from the group's annual holiday single for members of its Ten Club fan organization, including "Drifting," "Strangest Tribe," "Angel" and "Let Me Sleep."

Meanwhile, additional details have come to light regarding "Live at the Garden," taped July 8 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Bonus features include a solo performance of the B-side "Dead Man" by frontman Eddie Vedder, a version of the Hunters And Collectors' "Throw Your Arms Around Me" featuring that band's Mark Seymour, a reel of band outtakes set to "Down" and a collection of crew outtakes set to "All Those Yesterdays."

In a further nod to the collaborative spirit of Pearl Jam's 2003 Riot Act tour, the DVD includes a montage of guest performances from the likes of Johnny Marr, the Dead Boys' Cheetah Chrome, former Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, Steve Earle, Sleater-Kinney and Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, among others.

As reported yesterday, Pearl Jam will play an Oct. 22 acoustic concert at Seattle's Benaroyal Hall, with proceeds to benefit the local YouthCare center for at-risk and homeless children. The group will also be on hand Oct. 25 for its sixth appearance at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit outside San Francisco.

Here is the track list for "Lost Dogs":

BLACK SABBATH Box Set Delayed Until 2004 - Oct. 1, 2003

The much-anticipated eight-disc BLACK SABBATH box set, "Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath (1970-1978)", has had its release date pushed back to early 2004, according to a Rhino Records spokesperson. No reason was given for the delay, but an official press release on the matter is expected by the end of the week.

Retailing for $99.98, "Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath (1970-1978)" will feature remastered versions of the band's albums with Ozzy Osbourne behind the mike, as well as a live DVD with previously unseen footage.

The original SABBATH lineup (along with executive producer Sharon Osbourne) supervised the box set, which will feature the classic albums "Black Sabbath", "Paranoid", "Master of Reality", "Vol. 4", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Sabotage", "Technical Ecstasy" and "Never Say Die!"

The box will include the band's only non-LP studio recording, "Evil Woman", from 1970. The bonus DVD will feature classic performances of such SABBATH songs as "Iron Man" and "Paranoid", a live cover of Carl Perkins' "Blues Suede Shoes", and a rare promotional clip for the song "Black Sabbath". It will also feature original interviews from such SABBATH disciples as Rob Zombie, James Hetfield, Vince Neil, Krist Novoselic, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Dave Navarro, Billie Joe Armstrong, Slash, Beck, David Lee Roth and Henry Rollins.

The eighty-page booklet also features a group timeline, photos, reprints of all the album lyrics and two new historical essays by writers Chris Welch ("1970-1972: Lords of This World") and Brian Ives ("1973-1978: A Hard Road").

As previously reported, a spokesperson at the management company of SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi has confirmed that the remaining BLACK SABBATH catalog is slated for similar treatment later in 2004. No further information is available at this time.

Re: WEEKLY MUSIC NEWS

The Pervert Alliance Begins!

Despite all of his travails with Sony Music, Michael Jackson still owes the label one more album, which he plans to deliver this fall as a greatest-hits disc. There will be one new song on it, though, and it looks like it'll be an R. Kelly track.

A premature press release, sent out by Sony Music U.K. and then retracted, revealed that a song written by Kelly called "One More Chance" was under consideration for the Jackson compilation, currently called Number Ones. According to a source close to the project, "One More Chance" was produced by both Kelly and Jackson, but it's still a matter of discussion whether it'll make the album.

Though the press release was retracted, the source said the information included in it was "close," save for the final track listing, since that has yet to be determined. Eighteen tracks were said to be featured, including "Thriller," "Beat It," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Billie Jean," "Dirty Diana" and "Smooth Criminal."

Once the songs for the greatest-hits album are finalized, accompanying videos would also be compiled simultaneously in a DVD format, which may include "The Making of Thriller."

The U.K. press release gave a November 17 release date for Number Ones, but the source said it might not be released until next year.

POWERMAN 5000 Drop Off MUDVAYNE Tour, Blame Declining Record Sales - Oct. 1, 2003

POWERMAN 5000 have withdrawn from their tour with MUDVAYNE, FINGERTIGHT and V-SHAPED MIND after their tour support was reportedly pulled by their record company, Dreamworks Records.

The band's frontman, Spider One, has posted the following message explaining the situation:

"Alright, everybody. I know you're all anxious to know what's going on with this tour news, so I'm here to fill you in. Basically, the music business is in the toilet - no one is buying CDs, and less and less people are going to see bands live. Every major label in America has lost an obscene amount of money this year and it's getting worse every day. Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking you to feel sorry for the labels, but the reality is this: if they're not making any money, you better believe your favorite band isn't doing too well either. So this brings me to the topic of PM5K on tour with MUDVAYNE. To be honest with you, this was the best tour we have been a part of all year!! Every show was incredible and the guys in MUDVAYNE are all very cool!! But unfortunately we are being forced to cut it short for business reasons beyond our control. This is not a situation we are very happy about at all. Sorry to all who will miss out, I wish it didn't have to be this way. But don't overreact either, since we are only talking about missing out on two weeks of shows. And I want to make it clear that the band has not broken up or been dropped from Dreamworks!! We have played about 150 shows since we hit the road back in April and it's just time for a break. Hopefully we will start touring again in the new year, so hang in there!! Again, we can't apologize enough to all of you for this situation, but everything will work out one way or another.

"In the meantime, get ready for a little surprize coming up real soon [reported to a proper release of the band's 'scrapped' 2001 album, 'Anyone For Doomsday?'—Ed.]. What surprize? you ask. Let's just say this - don't waste any more money on Ebay...."

Re: WEEKLY MUSIC NEWS

If you're planning to include the DVD "Live at Slane" on your list to Santa this year, make sure you clarify which one, because U2 aren't the only ones who've been rocking down the walls of the Irish castle.

In August, the Red Hot Chili Peppers played a show there to more than 80,000 fans and a recording of the event will be released on DVD November 18, the same day the band issues a best-of LP with two new tracks.

The earliest songs on the DVD are "Power of Equality," "Give It Away" and "Under the Bridge" from the band's 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, but most are from the Peppers' last two records, 1999's Californication and 2002's By the Way. Highlights include "Californication," "Scar Tissue," "Around the World," "Zephyr Song" and "Throw Away Your Television."

The Greatest Hits album takes over where the band's 1992 record What Hits!? left off (although a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" from Mother's Milk appears on both). There's a sampling of tracks from Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication and By the Way, and one song from 1995's One Hot Minute, "My Friends," the only Chili Peppers album to feature guitarist Dave Navarro. Greatest Hits also includes the new songs "Fortune Faded" and "History," which the band recorded during its By the Way tour. Other songs recorded during those sessions might make the band's next studio album. The record also includes "Soul to Squeeze," which previously was only available on the "Coneheads" soundtrack.

Greatest Hits will be available in two formats. The first will be a single CD and the second will be a combination CD and DVD package. The DVD will be comprised of 15 videos including two that are previously unreleased in the U.S., "Road Trippin' " and "Universally Speaking." The DVD also includes interviews with bandmembers and video directors and behind-the-scenes footage of 2000's Californication tour.
