GODSMACK Rethink Acoustic EP Idea - Oct. 7, 2003

GODSMACK appear to have changed their minds about releasing an all-acoustic EP, titled "The Other Side", next month through their label, Republic/Universal Records. The band recorded acoustic versions of "Serenity" and seven other songs during sessions in Hawaii this summer with producer David Bottrill. A tentative Nov. 18 release date is set, but LiveDaily.com quotes a management source as saying that plans for the album may change before then.

Speaking to Canada's Chart Attack recently. GODSMACK drummer Shannon Larkin was non-committal about the EP's release, saying "[GODSMACK mainman] Sully [Erna] came up with the idea to do this acoustic record, basically, you know, so the label would pay for our vacation. So basically we went to Hawaii for 17 days for a vacation and did a record for the hell of it. And it's not going to be the new GODSMACK record. We're even thinking of ways... we're not sure how we're going to approach this yet. But we might put it out as a bonus EP on the 'Faceless' record. So if you buy the 'Faceless' record, you get the bonus EP."

GODSMACK will continue to tour the U.S. through the end of November before hooking up with METALLICA for a European trek that will conclude on December 20 in London, England.

JERRY CANTRELL Debuts 'New' Band At SAMMY HAGAR's CABO WABO MEXICAN MELTDOWN - Oct. 7, 2003

Former ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell debuted his "new" solo band — William Duvall (guitar, COMES WITH THE FALL), Adam Stanger (bass, COMES WITH THE FALL), plus a couple of as-yet-undisclosed session musicians — at Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo Mexican Meltdown on October 3-4. Jerry reportedly played a full set on both nights (including an "awesome" cover of PINK FLOYD's "Dark Side Of The Moon") and stuck around on the second night to partake in an all-star jam that featured members of SAMMY HAGAR AND THE WABORITAS, former MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee, and RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS skinbasher Chad Smith. Among the "blazing" highlights, according to Hagar's web site, "was an impromptu medley of THE BEATLES' 'Come Together' and RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS' 'Give It Away' with Chad on drums, WABORITA bassist Mona, WABORITA guitarist Vic Johnson, WABORITA Jesse Harms on keyboards, WABORITA David Lauser on percussion and Tommy on percussion. Also scorchers included Tommy sitting in for the MONTROSE hit 'Rock Candy', Sammy singing lead on the ALICE IN CHAINS hits 'Man in the Box' and 'No Excuses' and everyone on stage for some of Sammy's greatest hits including 'Shaka Doobie', 'Finish What Ya Started' and 'Best of Both Worlds'."

Stated Sammy, "This was one of absolute highlights in my career. I am a very lucky person, and man, it just doesn't get any better than this."

WHITE LION Singer Speaks Out On Upcoming Reunion - Oct. 6, 2003

WHITE LION singer Mike Tramp recently released the following statement to MelodiRock.com regarding the group's upcoming reunion:

"Since I have been on the road in Europe, there has been a new story every night about a potential WHITE LION reunion for next year. Since I have always been a man of facts rather than rumors, here's what's REALLY going on.

"In the summer, I realized that, if there ever was to be a [WHITE LION] reunion, it would have to be in 2004 and not at any other time. I spoke to the other members of the band and told them of my plans and, as we are living in the time we are living in, everything depends on what is really on the table.

"My manager and I talked to our agent, he tested the waters and the reactions were overwhelming from many parts of the world. Same goes for record companies and publishers, who all felt that this could be a very strong project for next year.

"At this point, the ONLY thing that is confirmed is that there will be a WHITE LION tour in 2004. I am not able to confirm the line-up, I am not able to confirm the songs that will be played and I am not able to confirm any shows except that we will be co-headlining Bang Your Head 2004 in Balingen, Germany.

"The goal is to play as many shows in the summer as possible and whatever you read right here is the truth. Enjoy the rumors on the internet, but unless you see it at www.melodicrock.com, it is nothing but a rumor. All the best, Mike Tramp"

NEWS - Ozzy And Kelly Osbourne To Duet On Sharon's Show
10/06/2003

(10/6/03, 6 p.m. ET) -- Ozzy Osbourne and his daughter, Kelly, will perform their rendition of Black Sabbath's "Changes" on an upcoming episode of the Sharon Osbourne Show. The duet appears on the new reissue of Kelly's 2002 debut album Shut Up, which was re-released by Sanctuary Records last Tuesday (September 30). The disc was originally released by Epic Records, who dropped Kelly late last year. Ozzy himself parted ways with the label shortly after that.

The original version of "Changes" appeared on the 1972 album, Black Sabbath Vol. 4.

The city council of Birmingham, England, refused last week to grant Ozzy the Freedom Of The City, the town's highest honor. Ozzy was born in Birmingham and formed Sabbath there. Councillors did not think he was an appropriate role model to receive the award.

Actor Johnny Depp is interested in playing Ozzy in a film version of the metal legend's life.

Ozzy is said to be writing a Broadway musical based on the life of notorious Russian monk Rasputin.

Tears For Fears principals Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith have reunited and inked a deal with Arista Records, which will release the duo's first album together since 1989 early next year. The pair performed together for the first time in over a decade Saturday (Oct. 4) at Andre Agassi's "Grand Slam for Children" benefit in Las Vegas.

Tears For Fears came to prominence in the mid-1980s while signed to Mercury Records. The band's breakthrough album, "Songs From the Big Chair," spent five weeks at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and was certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Amercia (RIAA) for U.S. shipments of 5 million copies. That album featured the back-to-back No. 1 hits "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Shout," as well as the No. 3 "Head Over Heels."

Smith left Tears For Fears in 1991 to pursue solo projects, while Orzabal released two more albums under the group name name on Epic Records -- 1993's "Elemental" and 1995's "Raoul and the Kings of Spain." Both musicians released solo albums in recent years: Smith's "Mayfield" (Zero Disc) in 1998 and Orzabal's "Tomcats Screaming Outside" (Eagle Records) in 2001.

A greatest-hits album celebrating the band's Mercury years, "Tears Roll Down: Greatest Hits 1982-1992" (Fontana), peaked at No. 53 on The Billboard 200 in 1992, and has been certified triple-platinum by the RIAA.

ZZ Top will play the final concert at Houston's Compaq Center, formerly known as the Houston Summit. The Nov. 22 show will mark the band's 23rd appearance at the venue, longtime home to the Houston Rockets National Basketball Association franchise. The building will be converted into the Lakewood International Center ministry facility.

"We've been playing the Summit since jump," ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill says in a statement. "It's been like a second home to us when you consider that, besides the gigs we've done there, all three of us have attended hundreds of games and shows by artists we wanted to see, just like everybody else in Houston."

ZZ Top has played the arena more than any other musical act, followed by Willie Nelson and Neil Diamond, who have each performed there 17 times. The Nov. 22 show -- tickets for which go on sale Saturday (Oct. 11) -- will also mark the end of the band's current Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers tour.

ZZ Top is touring in support of its latest RCA album, "Mescalero." Released last month, the set debuted at No. 57 on The Billboard 200.

In a break from its headlining tour, the band will perform tomorrow (Oct. 7) at the Winston Cup Extreme Tribute Party at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. Also appearing will be Hank Williams Jr., Wayne Newton, Trace Adkins, Jimmy Wayne and George Jones, among others. Net proceeds from the event will be donated to the Speedway Children's Charities in honor of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The event is a pre-cursor to the UAW-GM Quality 500 that will take place at the site on Saturday. R&B star Monica will sing the National Anthem prior to the NASCAR race.

As previously reported, the music of the "little 'ol band from Texas" will be compiled for the four-disc collection "Chrome, Smoke & BBQ: The ZZ Top Box," due Oct. 14 from Warner Bros.

Kid Rock will go the self-titled route for his sixth studio album. The follow-up to 2001's multi-platinum Cocky will be released on November 11th.
Taking a cue from his Twisted Brown Trucker band DJ Uncle Kracker -- who scored a summer hit with a cover of Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" -- Rock will delve into Seventies classic rock for the album's lead single, his take on Bad Company's riff-centric anthem "Feel Like Makin' Love." The song will be released to radio later this week.

"Maybe I was born at the right time, when people needed me," Kid Rock told Rolling Stone, when asked if his Seventies reverence was out of its time. "'We're gonna save you for this decade, because they might need ya. We got as many as we need for this one.' So be it. Hopefully, I'll do a good job and not let anybody down."

Kid Rock will arrive on a wave of recent momentum. Cocky made a strong debut on the charts upon its release, but quickly disappeared from the Top 100. But Rock's single "Picture," a duet with Sheryl Crow, found fans on rock and country radio and helped pull Cocky back from the nether regions of the charts. In February, the record rebounded climbing to Number Three, a higher position than it occupied in its debut week.

SLAYER: 'Soundtrack' Box Set Contents Revealed - Oct. 8, 2003

SLAYER's long-awaited four-disc box set, "Soundtrack To The Apocalypse" (American Recordings/UMe), will finally be released on November 25.

A three-CD/one-DVD box set regular edition and four-CD/one-DVD specially packaged "ammo box" for the deluxe version, "Soundtrack To The Apocalypse" includes tracks spanning every SLAYER album since 1986, soundtrack cuts, Japan-only tracks, more than a dozen rarities, and a DVD of live performances spanning 20 years, all digitally remastered. The deluxe edition adds a full-length concert CD from SLAYER's 2002 "God Hates Us All" tour stop in Anaheim, California, presented in a "blood pack" sleeve (with faux blood and floating skulls). The tour was the band's first with original drummer Dave Lombardo since 1992. The deluxe edition also includes a wall banner and replica backstage laminate. Both editions have an extensive booklet spotlighting a history based on interviews with each member and long-time producer Rick Rubin.

Disc 1 opens with five tracks from SLAYER's 1986 major label debut, "Reign In Blood", considered the most brutal thrash metal album of all time. Among the fan favorites are "Postmortem" and "Raining Blood". The album was the first of four consecutive gold studio albums, an impressive feat for a band that receives little radio or MTV exposure. From 1988's "South Of Heaven" are five tracks, including the title track. Culled from 1990's "Seasons In The Abyss" are another quintet, including "Dead Skin Mask". 1991's live "Decade Of Aggression" contributes three — "Chemical Warfare" and "Hell Awaits" among them.

Disc 2 continues the chronology with five recordings from 1994's "Divine Intervention", three from 1996's "Undisputed Attitude", a trio from 1998's "Diabolus In Musica" and another three from 2001's "God Hates Us All". Songs heard on various soundtracks are joined by two cuts previously unreleased in the U.S. from the Japanese "Diabolus In Musica", two more from the import "God Hates Us All" and a bonus cover of the SUICIDAL TENDENCIES' "Memories Of Tomorrow" from the Japan-only "Undisputed Attitude".

Disc 3 focuses on rarities, from the earliest known SLAYER recordings (previously unreleased 1983 live tracks) to seminal tracks taken from the band's garage rehearsals and even home demo recordings. The Disc 4 DVD showcases performances throughout the band's career and throughout the world as well as various TV appearances from singer-bassist Tom Araya, guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, and Lombardo.

NEWS - Courtney Love Could Get Year In Jail On Drug Charges
10/09/2003

(10/9/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Courtney Love could get up to a year in jail on charges of being under the influence of a controlled substance, according to MTV.com. The former Hole singer was charged with one misdemeanor count Wednesday (October 8), following her arrest last Thursday (October 2), outside the Los Angeles house of her producer, manager, and ex-boyfriend, Jim Barber. The misdemeanor charge carries a minimum of 90 days behind bars, and a maximum of one year. Love is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow, although she does not have to appear in court.

Following her arrest, Love was taken to a police station where she posted bail of $2,500 and was released. A short time later, she reportedly called Beverly Hills emergency dispatchers and was taken to Century City Hospital for treatment of an overdose.

Although police spokespersons did not divulge what substance Love was allegedly using, the singer and actress herself posted a somewhat cryptic message on her official website this past Sunday (October 5), which read in part, "Two words...MY house...five words...Don't F--K with a strong sedative...one word ipecac?...IPECAC? or AMBULANCE?...I lost a day so I couldn't talk...that motherf--king piece of sh-t in MY house...and I will not even comment on the L.A.P.D....oh and the controlled substance...ONE F--KING WORD...XANAX!"

Xanax is a prescription anti-anxiety drug, which Love claims she told police she was taking. Ipecac is used to induce vomiting, usually when someone has swallowed a poisonous substance.

Love's debut solo album, America's Sweetheart, has been postponed from a late October release to February 10, 2004.

The trek, which rolls into Phoenix tonight (Oct. 8), is now slated to wrap Dec. 20 in Fresno, Calif. Several major markets will be revisited, including Boston, Detroit, New York and Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, sources say each band is prepping separate arena tours for next year. As previously reported, Aerosmith will also release a collection of blues-inspired songs on Columbia in early 2004.

The Kiss/Aerosmith combination has been a potent one at the box office. According to figures for 24 shows submitted to Billboard Box Score, the tour has played to 85% capacity and grossed more than $31.5 million.

"There are a lot of people who see this as the tour of the year, and a lot of people want to see it," Kiss principal Paul Stanley told Billboard in August. "As long as everybody's enjoying themselves, that's the key to it -- we always wind up going full-circle to 'this has to be enjoyable.' Fans know when you're having a great time, so as long as this is fun, we'll continue to do it. If it truly turned into the battle of the bands, we'd go home."

Fans sue limpbizkit over short performance -- A group of Chicago-area 'bizkit fans are suing the band for cutting a Summer Sanitarium show short by Brian Hiatt

As if being booed off stage weren't bad enough, Fred Durst and his limpbizkit bandmates are facing a lawsuit for leaving the stage early in the face of audience derision in a July 26 Chicago show. The suit (posted at thesmokinggun.com) accuses Durst of leaving the Summer Sanitarium stage only 17 minutes into his set. The suit says the show was supposed to be an hour and a half long, and that concertgoers are owed a $25 refund on their $75 tickets (the other acts, Metallica and Linkin Park, played as scheduled).

The suit also accuses Durst of uttering ''explicit sexual putdowns, disgusting homophobic...statements as well as offensive curses, all intended to incite more hostility from some in the crowd.'' An Interscope Records spokesperson for the band did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the suit. The band's new album, ''Results May Vary,'' debuted at No. 3 last week -- and fortunately, the disclaimer in its title should prevent any lawsuits from dissatisfied purchasers.

Brave Teen Passes Away Three Months After Meeting QUEENSRŸCHE Singer - Oct. 9, 2003

Claire Martin of the Denver Post reports that less than three months after Brittany Jo Woneis realized her lifelong dream of meeting QUEENSRŸCHE lead singer Geoff Tate and hearing him dedicate a song to her, she died Sunday of complications from the rare genetic skin disorder epidermolysis bullosa.

Brittany loved heavy-metal music, especially QUEENSRŸCHE, whose debut album, "The Warning", came out nearly two years before Brittany was born. She began listening to QUEENSRŸCHE, one of Brittany's mother Corinna Woneis' favorite bands, when she was a toddler.

She was a marked contrast to other QUEENSRŸCHE fans, who typically are males between 13 and their 30s. When Margaret Sharpe, a social worker at Hospice of Metro Denver, successfully arranged for Brittany to meet Tate and the band when QUEENSRŸCHE appeared in Denver in July, Corinna Woneis pictured the doctors' reaction.

"I said, 'People will freak out! These guys with their leather and stuff!"' she said.

"But they were so nice to her. Margaret told her, 'You picked a really nice band to like.' And it wasn't neat just for Brittany, but for all of us, and the whole audience.

"It was good even for QUEENSRŸCHE — you could tell by looking at them," she said.

Brittany Woneis liked heavy-metal music and country music so much that she relied on the songs as a kind of supplementary anesthetic. When the pain was especially bad, Brittany would put on her headphones. She listened to QUEENSRŸCHE whenever her caregivers changed the gauze bandages that covered her body.

As her condition worsened and Brittany grew weaker, changing the bandages was so painful that she had to be sedated. She drifted to sleep listening to Tate sing, "She wore her pain like a shackled spirit/Eternal life was her debt to pay" — a line from "The Lady Wore Black", the song he dedicated to Brittany at QUEENSRŸCHE's July 22 Denver concert.

"She made people realize that their day wasn't going so bad," her mother said.

"She put it all in perspective for people - made them realize that things could be worse, the way they were for her."

Brittany's funeral took place Wednesday (October 8), 10 days short of her 18th birthday.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS: 'Thank You' DVD Details Revealed - Oct. 9, 2003

Billboard.com reports that STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' upcoming Atlantic best-of set, "Thank You", will include a DVD packed with three hours of videos, live performances and footage of the band shot by friends and fans. The 15-track audio anthology — due on November 11 — will be available with and without the DVD.

The DVD will feature clips for 32 songs, including a rendition of the AEROSMITH classic "Sweet Emotion" with the band's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry and run through Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman" with the artist.

As previously reported, the tracks on the "Thank You" audio disc span the band's five studio albums, which have sold a combined 12 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Included on the set is the new song "All In The Suit You Wear", an audio sample of which is available on the band's official web site.
