Re: weekly music news
The Who will release a deluxe two-CD version of their classic 1969 rock opera Tommy, consisting of the original album and an additional disc of outtakes and rarities on October 28th. Who Guitarist Pete Townshend digitally remixed the album from the original master tapes, and the album was re-mastered in 5.1 Surround Sound by producer Jon Astley (Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey), who has teamed with Townshend in re-mastering much of the Who's back catalog.
"In this case, 5.1 gives a different perspective," says Astley, "because Pete wanted these mixes to feature Keith and John, who were a little buried on the original. The extra space with 5.1 allowed him this without compromising the mix. You can still hear everything clearly but the bass and drums are more of a feature."
Rarities include previously unavailable outtakes such as "I Was," and "Ms. Simpson," as well as alternate versions of tracks like "We're Not Gonna Take It."
"'We're Not Gonna Take it' is very interesting as it is an early version before the "listening to you' refrain was added," says Astley. "Pete sings the 'See me, feel me' as he was going to be Tommy originally, but the track ends abruptly with a quick repeat of the intro."
Also included are unreleased demos of "It's a Boy," and "Do You Think It's Alright" with acoustic guitar, that give a window into Townshend's initial vision for the album.
"Like all of Pete's demos, the songs are very close to completion before the Who were allowed to contribute," Astley says. "Pete always wanted this record to be acoustically led, but he was overridden by Kit [Lambert], the producer. The demos will give you an insight to this."

JERRY CANTRELL To Guest On New FILTER Album? - Oct. 20, 2003
FILTER mainman Richard Patrick has posted the following message to the "Rich's Words" section of the group's official web site:
"Ladies and gentlemen the new FILTER record is unbelievable, it's coming along nicely and it's full of lots of variety. [Engineer] Rae Dileo and I are pounding out the songs and I've been talking to new producers to bring on board, there's some really talented folks out there. I recently had the honor and privilege of having [former ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist] Jerry Cantrell come into the studio and work on new material with me. He came and pumped out about 100 hundred riffs and it was awesome, I had a lot of fun and it's great to work with him. Ya know, I've been sober for more than a year now, and the first thing I did to mark the anniversary was to go out and get a tattoo of my sobriety date on my arm. It didn't hurt at all, it only cost me $60 and it'll be there forever. I've been seeing a lot of shows in LA recently including RADIOHEAD and MARILYN MANSON, they both rocked and its making me want to get back out on the road again. So yeah thanks for the support, expect a new FILTER record in the near future, love ya and I'll talk to you soon."

NEWS - Rob Zombie Launches 'Spookshow' For Halloween
10/22/2003
(10/22/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Horror rocker Rob Zombie may be taking a break from recording, but he's busy with tons of other projects. First out of the gate will be a new comic book series called Spookshow International. The first issue comes out on Halloween and will feature stories written by Rob and drawn by a variety of artists. He gave LAUNCH a sneak preview of what to expect.
"There's three different stories in each issue that continue, and they're kind of all over the place," Zombie said. "Some of them are really, my favorite one is this thing called 'El Superbeasto,' which is sort of like this Mexican wrestler hero guy, but it's sort of like adult but silly. He lives in this sort of world that's nothing but monsters and strippers, so it's sort of like an Austin Powers meets the Munsters type thing. So some of them are ridiculous like that, and some of them are a little more serious."
Zombie is also getting ready to direct the sequel to his popular and controversial filmmaking debut, House Of 1000 Corpses. He told LAUNCH what direction he plans to take the movie in. "It's a very different movie this time around," Zombie said. "It's much darker, more serious movie, so we wanna really take all the characters that starred in the first movie and, you know, really flesh 'em out. The first one is what it is, but to continue on in that direction in any way would just make it become kind of like a joke--too campy, too silly. So the next one's really, it's not very humorous at all."
Zombie says he completed the script for House Of 1000 Corpses 2 last week and hopes to start shooting right after Christmas. Expect a different title as well.
Zombie's new album is a greatest hits collection called Past, Present, And Future. The first single is a brand new tune called "Two Lane Blacktop."

EDDIE VEDDER's LAYNE STALEY Tribute To Be Included On Collection On Rarities - Oct. 22, 2003
PEARL JAM frontman Eddie Vedder's tribute to late ALICE IN CHAINS singer Layne Staley, written on the day of Staley's death, will be included on "Lost Dogs", PEARL JAM's upcoming double-disc rarities collection, according to Billboard.com. The track, titled "4/20/02", is not listed on the album but can be found several minutes after "Bee Girl", the last song on the set's second disc.
"It was a real personal song [Vedder] wrote the night we all found out [Staley] died," PEARL JAM guitarist Stone Gossard told Billboard.com last year. "He stayed in there, didn't work on anything else, and worked this song up." Added guitarist Mike McCready, "he wrote it in the ukulele tuning, so it had this weird vibe to it, and it was sad."
In the song, Vedder lashes out at the singers of unnamed bands copying the style of Staley, who died after battling drug addiction for years. "So sing just like him, f***ers," Vedder sings. "It won't offend him / just me / because he's dead." The cut features only Vedder on vocals and guitar.
"Lost Dogs" will be released Nov. 11 by Epic, the same day as the concert DVD "Live at the Garden".

NEWS - Green Day Frontman Refutes 'Mystery Band' Rumors
10/22/2003
(10/22/03, 5 p.m. ET) -- Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has added fuel to the fire regarding the Network, the mysterious band on Armstrong's Adeline Records label that some fans claim is actually Green Day itself in disguise. With rumors flying that the Network's debut album, Money Money 2020, is a new Green Day disc that was rejected by their record company, Armstrong left this message on Green Day's official website.
"All I gotta say is f--k the Network, those guys are totally spreading rumors," Armstrong said. "I tried to do those guys a favor by bringing them to this country, and putting out their record, and this is how I get repaid, by talking sh-t about my band. Anyways, unfortunately, there's a contract and I have to put out their record, so the only thing I can say is: f--k you, Network. Bring it on."
Despite Armstrong's denial, no one has seen the Network without masks on, and parts of their album sounds suspiciously like Green Day, particularly the vocals.
Two of the Network's members go under names associated with Green Day. The band's leader, Fink, says he is an Aquarius and funded the album out of his own money. Billie Joe Armstrong is an Aquarius and, since he owns Adeline Records, did in fact fund the Network's album. Green Day also wrote a song called "The Ballad Of Wilhelm Fink."
Another member of the Network is known as Captain Underpants. This is a name that drummer Tre Cool used in a pre-Green Day band called the Lookouts.
The members of Green Day, under their real names, make a guest appearance on Iggy Pop's new album, Skull Ring, due out November 4.
An official "new" Green Day disc is due out in early 2004.

Re: weekly music news
A sprawling five-disc Johnny Cash box set will arrive Nov. 25 from American Recordings/Lost Highway. Dubbed "Unearthed," the set features 79 songs, 64 of them previously unreleased and produced by Rick Rubin during the late country great's sessions for his four "American Recordings" albums released between 1994 and 2002.
Rubin first unveiled plans for the set exclusively to Billboard.com in August. Cash died Sept. 12 from complications related to diabetes at the age of 71.
The first three discs feature such finds as solo acoustic versions of "Long Black Veil" and "Flesh and Blood," and covers of Steve Earle's "Devil's Right Hand," Roy Orbison's "Down the Line" and the Neil Young songs "Heart of Gold" and "Pocahontas."
Discs two and three boast several duets, some with old friends and others with newer acquaintances. On the veteran side, Cash's former Sun Records labelmate Carl Perkins joins him for a run through the familiar "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" while his bandmate in the Highwaymen, Willie Nelson, shows up on "Like a Soldier." Glen Campbell sings with Cash on "Gentle on My Mind."
Skewing away from his contemporaries, late Clash lead singer Joe Strummer joins Cash on a version of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Tom Petty appears on "The Running Kind." Fiona Apple also sings "Father and Son" with him and Nick Cave joins in on "Cindy."
Of the Strummer duet, Rubin told Billboard.com, "When we were recording [Cash's 2002 album] 'The Man Comes Around,' Joe was coming every day, because he loved Johnny Cash, and he just happened to be in L.A. on vacation. He actually extended his trip a week longer just to come every day and be around Johnny."
A solo version of "Redemption Song" also appears on Strummer's new album, "Streetcore" (Hellcat/Epitaph). "Originally, the song was supposed to be a duet, and we recorded it as a duet. But, just in case, both Johnny and Joe sang the whole song several times," Rubin explained, noting that the track was nearly complete ("It wasn't mixed, but most of the overdubs were there") before Strummer died suddenly in December.
The fourth "Unearthed" disc is subtitled "My Mother's Hymn Book," and is comprised of 15 songs from a book of hymns Cash's mother read to him as a child. Via solo acoustic performances, the deeply spiritual artist revisits such secular songs as "I Shall Not Be Moved," "Do Lord," "If We Never Meet Again This Side of Heaven" and "In the Sweet By and By."
The final disc is a "best of" representation of the four albums Cash released with Rubin at the helm: 1994's "American Recordings," 1996's "Unchained," 2000's "American III: Solitary Man" and last year's "American IV: The Man Comes Around."
"Unearthed" will also include a 104-page clothbound book including a track-by-track discussion by Cash, Rubin and others. Also featured is one of Cash's final interviews, in which he and Rubin talk about the body of work they created.
As previously reported, Cash's life and career will be celebrated with a musical tribute Nov. 10 at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dwight Yoakam, George Jones, Rosanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Travis Tritt, Hank Williams Jr. and Sheryl Crow are among those confirmed to participate.
