Blue Murder

A band from the 80's I guess I've never heard of them before tonight. I just saw them on VH1 Classic and they are great. The singer has (had) it going on man, great voice and a monster shredder

Re: Blue Murder

Shit, you didn't know BLue Murder? Where were you, Eric?
Just kiddin'
Anyhoo, Blue Murder was formed by John Sykes right after he left Whitesnake.
John Sykes is responsible for the whole Whitesnake album, but didn't get to tour with the band to support it I think.

Wahwah will tell you more about Sykes. He's a huge hero of mine.

Sykes was also with Thin Lizzy and Tygers of Pan Tang. He recorded a couple albums with Whitesnake, "Slide It In" and "1987". But before "1987" was even released, Coverdale booted everyone who recorded on it, except for Adrian Vandenburg who did the solo on "Here I Go Again".

Anyhow, Vivian Campell and Vandenburg are great players, but they did no justice to the recorded tunes on the subsequent 'Snake tour. John's soaring tone is hard to copy and it's a must to be able to pull off the songs on that "87" album. Sykes is a master- he's one of the few players who could really make a Les Paul Custom and Mesa Boogie MkIII amp sing, scream and shred.

I like Vai too, but "Siip of the Tongue" was sort of contrived and weak.

Anyway, "JellyRoll", "Valley of the Kings" and "Ptolemy" are my BM faves.

You pretty much said most of it there mate. Saw him with the Tygers in 1982 and he was good but nowhere near the sound and style he has now. He was playing an SG. Also, he's now stepped into the shoes of the late, great Phil Lynott and goes out with Scott Gorham as Thin Lizzy playing all the old stuff but no writing as Phil did that TOO well! Went to see 'em in London last year and John was walking down Oxford Street in combats and Dr Marten boots with his old mum dolled up to the eyeballs on their way to the gig! I thought it was Philomena Lynott as she is very fond of him but John said a hello to his mum on stage. He's one of my fave gutarists cos I find it so hard to play his stuff-he's a one off...finally, he's from Blackpool which is the UK equivalent of Las Vegas only colder and with 2000 fish and chip shops! It also has a 3/4 replica of the Eiffel Tower...don't ask!

Thanks for the story Chris!!

That's awesome you saw the Master Sykes on the out and about... and wasn't that sweet... he brought his mother to the show!!! I knew he was a good guy!

And Blackpool sounds like fun! Las Vegas has a mini-Eiffel too (at the Paris Hotel) but the fish they serve is in the buffet and not very fresh. As well the chips are in the casinos and will co$t ya a pretty penny to hold... plus they're not very edible!

"Unlike me!" says Seņor Banana.
