I agree 100% To each his own, and although there are plenty of non black bluesplayers out there, itīs similar to what goes on with flamenco, nothing sounds as genuine as those who brought it up. Heck, gimme any Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, etc. singing the blues any time. No non-black will ever sing like that ever. Itīs their stuff. And a shame so few keep on with it, as they asociate it with "the bad times",...

I don't consider this thread racist at all. I mean, there was a movie called "White Men Can't Jump" which imo did not seem at all racist. I view this thread in the same light. I really think music and Blues specifically is very color blind...meaning it brings people of various backgrounds together to share a common human condition...longing, hurt, angst, sorrow, etc..and i truely admire and respect anyone who can express those feelings verbally in song, or instrumentation.

I would like to politely say, that movie and this thread are not the same.
How is it not racist to question a persons singing ability, based on thier color?

Is the idea that their skin is different, maybe their voice is different as well a completely and absurdly racist and discriminatory? I think it's a completely valid idea, and not racist, it's just posing up a question. In the same way that it's not sexist to say that men generally are better at say, heavy lifting and construction work than women. I do think there are some great white blues singers. I've already mention Don Van Vliet/Captain Beefheart, and I love Clapton's voice.
Really, it all just sums up to "some people can sing, some people can't, regardless of color, religion, sex, paper or plastic, or what bank you go to".

Sorry, but that is pure demagogy.
1. Can we all assume (the fairly reasonable) statement that no one who posted anything here is racist? I believe so, thereīs no need for even thinking about it,...
2. Itīs very easy to missunderstand an idea when written on a paper with such a fast paced media like a forum board, so lets keep cool,...
This being said, Iīd like to think that one thing does NOT negate the other, I mean, thereīs no doubt that " if you feel it you can sing it" and all that, but thatīs not the point, (at least how I understand it).
I just tend to believe Folklore music belongs ultimately to those who historically are bonded to it, make that Irish reels, Gambian music, indian or whatever, and back to the point of SINGING BLUES, itīs not that non blacks canīt have feel and talent, itīs just that it is not genuine to them; the accents, the time, the environment, everything,..and again, NOBODY is thinking racist here, at least not me,..

The point of this is simple. not to be racist.
1) I think most white men can't sing the blues (I am white BTW)
2) ...but Stevie wonder revered glenn hughes for his vocals/soul
3) it's 2006 and people still stereotype. IMO-blacks aren't better at dancing and athletics/dancing so much as it's in general part of their culture..if you do somthing all your life you will do well.
4) If you say the word professor-one may automatically envision an older white male, gray hair. (I actually did this a s a study), but ****e, many of my best teachers and professors were African American.
LOL-most white men can't jump and dunk, but a few can-the deal is you can do what you are pasionate about.
