DLR at Casino Rama- LIVE Review
Hey there all.
I was sent this review by a mate over at VHSTRUNGOUT.COM
They have a pretty good review section there of shows, some of which I have reposted here when they seem to be accurate and relevant.
I do not like to go to the "army" as those guys are scary fellas in there. This review though I feel sums up Dave at this moment in time. Not the best, not the worst but some what accurate account of one fans experince of DLR right now. Thought you would like to see what is going on in Dave's world.
DLR at Casino Rama was...interesting.
About 5000 people at the venue, sound was great. Dave had a pretty hot band with 2 guitarists - one guy played rhythm all night (yawn) but the lead guy was no slouch, covered all the EVH and Steve Vai stuff pretty much dead on, was an extremely clean picker and you could hear every note.
They played pretty much every classic Dave-era VH song you'd want to hear, opened with Hot For Teacher, good versions of Unchained, Runnin, Dance, Ain't Talkin Bout Love.
Diamond Dave comes out with short dark hair, some blue spandex pants with some snakeskin pattern imprinted on them, an untucked shirt to hide a bit of paunch, and generally hams it up like you'd expect. He's using the same lines he was using in the early 80's ("Don't stick your tongue out at me unless you're prepared to use it, honey", etc).
Voice wasn't really there (was it ever?) so he relied on the backing vocals to mask some of the high notes (you know, the ones at the bottom of Sammy's register)
Anyhow, show was fun for what it was worth (only $40 Cdn) but at the end of the day, Dave has lost his hair, lost his voice, and lost his cool...
And so ends the review - like somebody else on this board wisely said "It ain't Dave Lee Roth without Van Halen!"

One thing that really appeals to me is this idea of music being a living thing that has an evolution that, in a way, enables the artist to sell a process rather than a piece of product.

To let me clarify, I am supporter of all singers to this band and even though I would have love to have seen DLR in his prime, 1982 shows, OK maybe 1984 tour as well, I feel this review is quite sad. It sort of reminds me of an old football player who still plays on hoping to have that one magic season, or an old boxer who doesn't know that the crowd is not there to cheer him, but to look on him as maybe an amusement.
Dave for me is always magical, I have some great bootlegs now thanks to my mate Chad, and this material highlights Dave being what he did best, sing, dance, chat but now he just rehashs what he did years ago. Sammy can be described as being Sammy, but he does not act like he may be stuck in a time warp and cannot get out. If I had the chance to speak to David I would say, "Dave, the year is 2004, the 1980's have gone, fashions have changed and life has progressed on, why can't you...make yourself a part of this time or you may find yourself being booked as a circus act"
From what I see from his decision to become an EMT I think Dave may have found the calling he needed. It aint rock and roll, but he is making a difference to the lives around him. Best of luck Dave. We miss the creative frontman but welcome the grown man in 2004.

Well I was hoping that he would have re-united w/ vai and Sheenan. The first two solo efforts were brilliant.
