mike portnoy, you can tell he's playing on a track from a mile off
brain, yeah, he's great too!
tool drummer is danny carey? isn't it?
il add..christoph schneider from rammstein, PLEASE don't just dismiss him, give him a try, if we are looking to create a solid drummer list, some of the qualities he has cannot be found elsewhere!
chris maitland, he was great with porcupine tree, then he left and played/plays in the west end i think, check him out if you don't know him, porcupine tree are great!
josh freese, he plays a LOT, and the things he seems to put a lot into, tend to be pretty good (to me anyway), the vandals, a perfect circle, recent nine inch nails tour, other session work
As far as all-time great drummers that rarely leave the groove to do flashy stuff. I'd have to say the great Levon Helm.
Other drummers (whom I'm amazed haven't had mention)
-Ginger Baker (The Cream)
-Roger Taylor (Queen, The Cross, Solo)
-B.J. Wilson (Procol Harum)
-Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra) ***Sorry he was already mentioned***

These guys could be overrated but what would I know? I am a guitarist.
Neil Peart Alex Van Halen
John Bonham
Dave Lombardo
Stewart Copeland
Buddy Rich (met him once and he was a huge dhead)
Last but not least. Since her band mate bested EVH, Randy, Lynch, Vai, Satch, Emmett, Moore, etc in the Rolling Stone poll, I gotta put Meg White as the best drummer of all time.
1) Steve Smith is the epitome of a gr8 drummer who can play cool fusion, but also restraint (ala Journey). Let's face it In the music world a drummer that is overplaying is just as annoying to others in the band as a guitarist "wanking all the time".
2) Vinnie Paul-Who could thrash yet play with a groove
3) Phil Rudd-AC/DC-not the best by far technically but always held down the groove.

bill bruford of King Crimson comes to mind, he's on all the early YES recordings up to Close To The Edge, and his work with Crimson is excellent also. His solo project is called Earthworks, it's good stuff.
