Marillion - Marbles Album
Well, it turned up at home today. It was the Deluxe Edition. Arrived in a big package.
Unfortunately, I am at work today. To make matters worse, the car is booked in for a replacement windscreen, so I'm not going to be able to drive it until 6p.m. tonight
Otherwise, i would have gone home at lunchtime to pick it up.
Anyway. The wife says the CD packaging is gorgeous. She says that she has never seen anything like it. She says that the box is CD Sized, but it's a 128 page hard back book. She says that you would never guess that there are two CDs in there !
She's already checked though, and my name is in the credits, which is nice. But she just kept reiterating how nice the packaging is. Now I just want 6 p.m. to come, so I can race home and listen to a double CD of brand new music !!!

Plus, I just got another e-mail from the band saying that everything is geared up and looking good for the "You're Gone" single. They are expecting chart success which means radio airplay, and a Top Of The Pops appearance.

Re: Marillion - Marbles Album
WOW !!!
First thing's first. The geezer turned up early to do the windscreen. No sooner had he put the glass back in than I was racing back home to pick this CD up.
I tell you, the packaging is absolutely beautiful. There is no other word to describe it. In itself, the packaging is a piece of art. It's a box, and then the hard backed 128 page book slips out. Kind of like Pink Floyd's PULSE album. Anyway, the photography used is breathtaking. The CD's are in the front and back covers. But not in a sleeve like the PULSE album. They have there own tray with holder and cushioned felt.
I tell you. I expected to pay £30 for a double album with a paper booklet and receive my name in the credits. I thought that this, along with the fact that I was directly assissting the band's marketing campaign, justified the spenditure.
But I definitely now feel like I have definite value for money. There is nothing else in my CD collection that rivals this CD at the moment. Like I say, simple beautiful.
I'm about to give it a spin now. Can't wait. So excited !!!

Re: Marillion - Marbles Album
Well, that's CD1 finished. It's typical Marillion, but raised to the next level. I do like it, a heck of a lot, but it's going to take a while to get into it. Everything is so complex on there.
But I am blown away by it. The music lives up to the packaging. I can't believe I have another CD of brand new music as well now !!!

Re: Marillion - Marbles Album
Well, the 2nd CD is much more lively than the first. Much more up tempo and rocky. The single is a good song. Not sure how it will be received by the UK market. However, there's quite a diverse range of songs out there now, so you never know. It may just get in there and stay there.
I'll certainly be doing my bit to get it a high chart position !!!
Anyway, it's a great double album. It's going to take me a while to get into it, but definitely a great buy, and well worth the wait ! I hope they manage to accomplish the exposure that they were hoping for when they set out with this album.

I'll post a later review when I've got some of the songs under my skin, but the way it's shaping up, I think I'm going to end up liking it A LOT !!!

PRESS RELEASE - Marillion Are Number One !!!
Marillion have hit the top of the online sales chart at HMV with their latest single " You're Gone". Jason Legg, Head of Marketing at HMV was quoted as saying, " This is heading towards the biggest pre-sale of any single that HMV have ever had". On top of this phenomenal success, Amazon has also been swamped with orders for the new single on all 3 formats pushing it to spots 1, 2 and 3 on their sales chart.
Remember we won't be selling the single via Racket Records so wherever you are in the world, if you want a copy go along to www.hmv.co.uk or www.amazon.co.uk (although it's more expensive at Amazon)

Marbles - Further Review
Hi there,
Well, I've had this Double CD for a week now. However, I haven't managed to listen to it as much as I would have liked. This is for several reasons :

[*]Mainly, I've had a stnking cold for the past week, so spent the most of the time in bed[*]It's back to typical Marillion. There are several 11 minute - 12 minute songs on there[*]It's highly conceptual, so it takes a bit to get your head around it[*]As with most Concept Albums, you can't just listen to snippets of the album, you need to listen to the whole of it to get the whole picture, with a double CD, that's kinda difficult
But, I really do like what I have heard so far. Like I say, it is typical Marillion. Not caring about the length of a song. If one song takes 1 minute to get the point across, then it is 1 minute long. If another takes 13 minutes to get the whole point across, then so be it.
Also, there are many songs on here that have multiple mood and key changes. Just like the great Marillion Songs (I'm thinking Forgotten Sons, Grendel, Assassing, Waiting To Happen, The Great Escape, etc.), if the song required a mood change without warning, then they just put it in there, and there are flavours of this all over the album.
As for the concept itself. I sort of get it, but like I say, I really need to sit down with it, with the headphones and listen through the whole of it from start to finish.
There are some very haunting, driving rhythms all over the first CD, and the second CD lends itself to more progressive rock.
But the typical complex songwriting and fantastic lyrics are still there.
When I listen to the album I keep hearing undertones of Pink Floyd all over it.
As far as the album itself, I am reminded of Marillion's Afraid Of Sunlight Album as well as other Concept Albums, think Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory.
But, there's no doubt, it is Marillion at their best. Conceptual, great songs with pounding rhythms, great guitar work, and excellent vocals !!!
Here's looking forward to getting into it further.
The single is out on Monday, so I'll be interested to see how it does, because as I say, it's difficult to take any of the songs off this album in isolation.
Thanx for reading...

Single out tomorrow !
"You're Gone" is out tomorrow !!!
BUY IT !!!
This album is fantastic, gets better every listen. CD2 is definitely my favourite, The Damage currently being, "the one". However, I love the intricate work on Ocean Cloud on CD1.
Great stuff !

\"You\'re Gone\" Set To Debut In The Top 10 !!!
"You're Gone" entered the UK chart at #7, climbed to #4, and is currently hovering at around #6. It shouldn't take too many more sales to get them to #3.
So the band are currently hoping people buy it today and tomorrow aand then everyone will be listening to the chart come Sunday.
But a Top Ten release means more radio airplay and an appearance on Top Of The Pops !!!
Which is great for them. I just hope they don't use the video as coverage and get a live spot, because the video is rather weak by today's standards.
I watched it last night though, and didn't realise that Steve Rothery was using an e-bow on this song until I saw him playing the guitar with it. I just figured it was the keyboards.
It seems like a cool little toy.

\"You\'re Gone\" Ended Up At Number 7 !!!
Just so you know, "You're Gone" went into the UK chart at #7. The highest new entry, but they did not get any time on Top Of The Pops unfortunately.
They probably dropped straight out of the Top 40 this week, but you never know. When Dr. Fox played it on the countdown, he said that the girls in the office really liked it, saying it was very U2-ish.
However, whether people liked it enough to consider buying it and keep it in the charts is another matter.
I guess I will find out on Friday...

Re: \"You\'re Gone\" Ended Up At Number 7 !!!
However, I could just check the fookin' website
Top 40, Singles 21-40
...where I found that they were still in the charts at #32.
Pretty amazing to be honest. I guess a few people DID buy it to keep it in there !!!
Still doesn't look like they'll get a stint on the show, but never mind...

Re: \"You\'re Gone\" Ended Up At Number 7 !!!
I see there's no one commenting on Marillion but Mondola. Let me tell you that you're missing out on a great band. I go back to Misplaced Childhood with them and these guys are fantastic. Not your typical shredding guitar, but great almost progressive songs and very clever lyrics. Check em out or you're missing out. I need to buy the new one.

Re: \"You\'re Gone\" Ended Up At Number 7 !!!
Aww, Misplaced Childhood is a great album !!! What a cracker ! It is the one with Kayleigh on it, but there's much better ones on there. But the way the story is told all the way through is just a great album.
But then again, check them out for yourself, and make your own minds up.
I used to love the 12" picture discs from this band because the artwork and remixes were so damn good. Definitely felt as though you were getting value for money !!!

Once I get a membership I'll post some Marillion boots I have. If you haven't heard 'em you'll dig 'em. Very cool stuff, including the last show with Fish as far as I know.
