Me, and Stevie Ray Vaughan

Well, not the REAL Stevie, but his statue.. The statue is foudn at Town Lake in Austin, Texas... I tell you.. It is a great honor to actually stand next to this thing if you are a fan of him like me.. That is me obviously with the glasses.. And yes, I am wearing my favourite Stevie Ray Vaughan Shirt..

Anyone else come down here in Austin and seen it?

In 1982, I was just a "punk" teenager that played with some friends in a little band in the eastern part of Texas. We played for other friends and basically played the rock of the 1960's-the current rock. I was a HUGE Hendrix fan, in fact my friends got tired of me talking and playing Hendrix and the blues. On weekends we would go to the larger towns that had music stores and on occassion, we would go into Dallas or Ft. Worth. One Saturday, the guy that played drums had a cousin that took us to a number of shops in and around Dallas. I had just hooked up a killer early 60's Strat to a Marshall 1/2 stack and was playing Hey Joe. This guy walked in with some other people and heard me. He picked up a guitar and began playing with me. He then showed me a few little riffs. He asked if I liked Jimi's music and I told him that I LOVED it. We talked for about 20 minutes and my ride was ready to go. In Texas at the time, you would hear guys that should have had contracts and fame everyday. Anyway, the next year some time, the drummer came running over to my house and banged on the door. He was out of breath when I answered and had a copy of Texas Flood in his hand. I told him that I knew, I had heard it and loved the tone and the tunes. He kept shaking his head and said "NO! LOOK!" and flipped the album over and there on the back was the guy that was showing me those riffs at that shop in Dallas! I was floored! At that time, of course, there was no internet, and we were too young to get into some of the clubs that Stevie was playing up to that point. We had not really been to Houston (to listen to bands) and never to Austin yet. That fall, I think in October or November, his cousin got us tickets to see Stevie and Eric Johnson at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas. I stayed until after Stevie was done with his set and went up to where he was sitting afterward. I asked him to sign the Texas Flood Album and as he did, he stopped, took a look at me, and asked if I was still playing Hey Joe! He actually remembered me! My friend snapped a photo of us. From then on, I followed Stevie closely. While my friends were learning Iron Maiden songs, and Yngwie songs, I was listening to anything Stevie did as well as the music he turned me on to. Sadly, that was the last time I saw him live though. In 1989, I got married and went into the Air Force. The day before my wife's birthday, I was getting cleaned up from work when she came in and looked really serious about something. She told me what had happened at Alpine Valley early that morning. I was devestated. In fact, soon after, I just stopped playing altogether. It wasn't until 4 years ago when we were living in Austin and we got my son his first guitar for Christmas did I play again. Now, I have bought a couple of Strats (one of course is a SRV model) and a Fender Vibroverb Custom with the Diaz mods. My kids (Son 15, daughters 7 &6) and their friends know all about Stevie and his music. It is funny what happens after someone passes that has had a tremendous impact on the guitar and music in general. Stevie was a kind, great man that always had the time to talk to you. Even in his darkest hours with his substance abuses, I heard he was still the same gentle soul. Sadly, I have misplaced the photo and autograph, however, I think it may be in my parents attic. I will NEVER forget the day that I met Stevie.

in response to the original poster and the story above, man, its weird how a musician and music can mean so much to someone.i'm a player as well, but srv must be thee most influencial guitarist in texas.when kids are born, they get a copy of texas flood and a pawn shop strat!

no,seriously,i say that cause this lady in texas asked me to send a srv poster and some live boots to her for her son who is knee deep into the blues.he's pretty young.but i love the fact he's a blues cat at that age.i love srv and i'm glad to hear the story above and people like the original poster who keep srv's spirit and music alive.
