Oh, I see. So in order to have an opinion of a certain field, you should be better than the person/band you're criticizing.

You're like wizard

Personally I still am a BIG Metallica fan.I like that they try different things to change up the sound of the band..Some great and some not soo great...Thats life.

What is going on here in part is that we are looking at a typical "changing of the guard" scenario that happens every 10-15 yrs (something like that...).

The newest generation starts to come of age and start looking for "Thier Music","Thier Clothes","Thier way of talking"...etc..etc..

Thats great but an unfortunate side effect that seems to happen during this changing of the guard period is that the newer generation seems to go against what was popular with the previous generation.Every generation seems to have the idea that "Thier Music" is the be all end all of all time (say that 5 times fast ).

Suddenly the previous generation's bands "suck" or are "not talented"...I remember friends of mine saying how they HATED Led Zep (I'm 35yrs old BTW) and that Page "Sucked" compared to Van Halen,or Black Sabbath "sucked" compared to Metallica,Anthrax,Megadeth...etc

Then as I got older I noticed that "changing of the guard" pattern happening as I started to see people who were younger than myself saying things like Metallica "sux",Nirvana is the sh*t....Anthrax should hang it up because Korn is "sick".I still can't get myself to use "sick" in a positive manner...

At first the natural feeling I had was to get defensive but,I quickly realized the same thing I noticed with some of my old friends, they weren't musicians who really appreciated music but were only looking for thier "generation's voice" if you will.(Man..I use too many ""quotation"" marks!!)

The only people I ever noticed that kinda thought like I did were fellow musicians.Real musicians never really say they "hate" anything, they tend to just listen to certain bands or artists more often than others. They try to absorb and learn what they can from a particular style of music or a certain artists and move on.Always appreciating the act of someone trying to express thier self musically.

Musicians to me are not necessarily highly educated in music theory (although it helps) or earn every dollar from thier music....

It is someone who makes music, appreciates music and above all respects fellow musicians as brothers/sisters after the same goal.To enjoy life through music and share it with others.(God I gotta put the pipe down heh??)

In the end let me break it down for those that live a little on the "challenged side of life"...It is plain RUDE and IGNORANT to say a band or artist "sux" because you don't like what they do.

Everyone has an opinion and has the freedom to express it and explain why they have that opinion. But it should be done in a mature and respectful manner.

I agree to an extent about some of the comments about Kirk Hammet for example. But I think a better way of explaining that would be to say (in my case) that I don't like how much wah he uses,it tends to kinda drown out the actual playing, his vibrato is not what I like in lead playing.I prefer vibratos more like Malmsteen or Satriani, smooth wide styles. And he relies too much on pentatonics for my taste.Takes a little longer than "he sux",but in the end I think it works better.

I think I get across my point about what I like or don't like about his playing. And I never had to put him down as a musician. And a musician he is because wether you like his playing or not,I think he does it with passion. He loves what he's doing and he loves guitar players/playing.You can see it in him with interviews and his live playing.

But anyways... enough

I can't believe you read it this far!!!! Get a life!!!

Metallica debate

[quote=EvilGtr]Metallica - the band that never fails to disgust me each time I hear them. Just why the hell are they so popular with seemingly the entire world??? Why do people out there say that they are so talented that they beat Megadeth hands down?? First, their songwritng sucks. No creativity, just repetitions of the same crap album after album. Solos? Worse. Hammett is being called "guitar god" in almost every single f**king guitar forum I can find on the net while every single solo Kirk plays is written the same way, album after album.

First off,
You should respect what they have done to the face of music! They revolutionized metal today (among others). They are popular because they are GOOD. Saying "Kirk is a guitar god" is just a matter of one's own opinion. People are entitled to that. Their lyrics are memorable and great, and Kirk's solos used to be great. I do hate their new shit, but their upcoming album(from how it looks)will change that. If you hate them now, its understandable, but hating them all together is just shitty. Lighten up and respect what they've done. I don't know what music you listen to, but you gotta respect different styles and bands.

hell yeah!!!

i so agree, but in my opinon they were ok after they fired dave, but really started to suck after cliff died. my girl friend gave me load and reload as a gift and i offerded to give everyone i knew to give them $10.00 to take the crap from me and after a while my cuz took them from me. hell i even gave up some strange and a free ticket to a that big "sell out" concert that jane's addiction started. even worse i lost respect for goerdie white aka twiggy when i heard he was in some kind of monster and ever tried out for the band. thank you saten that he did not get in. i just wished they would hang it up, it's already been 15 years to late. anything after master of puppets is crap and MEGADETH RULES!!!!

well what can I say? I'm really not gonna start a fight here cause maybe many guys out there have just listened to metallica since the black album days, or boast a collection of zillion cd's and deem themselves "connoiseurs" or "experts" when it comes to music, especially metal. I can tell you this: I have been a metallica since I was 12 and now I am 36. I can honestly say I know quite a lot about music and consider myself a huge metal and music fan. My all-time fave band is metallica and for me there's no band better than these guys. It's very easy to talk trash about a band now that they're getting older. This trash mainly comes from kids or guys near my age who were just squeezing pimples when I had already been into metallica for at least 10 years. I'm sure as hell many out there "so called" expert musicians or music fans do not even recall bands such as satan, cloven hoof, savage, acid, warlord, savage grace, etc... I can go on and on naming bands which were coming out at the same time kill em all got out or maybe before; many of them faded into oblivion. Metallica? Well, they just took the world by storm and came up with THE 3 best defining and demolishing albums of all time in terms of metal, thrash metal or whatever the heck u wanna call it. I don't think it's fair to talk trash about a band who kicks every other band's ass. In the light of what the music scene is offering right now, I don't think I'd be willing to pay 4 the kind of crap many bands put out there proclaiming themselves metal, or rock. The scene around the USA is just pathetic. Obviously, there are still a bunch of bands out there[many of them already very experienced or old] which are worth spending any TRUE metal fan's money. I don't wanna mention names cause that's what many so-called experts in metal do. So, I'm gonna keep it simple: no band I've seen is better than metallicaa live. Period. Please, don't start mentioning hundreds of bands here. Someone out there usually, or maybe many guys out there are gonna start comparisons like mentioning shadow's fall or whatever. Nope. That does not cut it. If u wanna compare metallica to someone else, compare them with a band that plays what metallica plays: thrash metal. Do not compare them with Death[one of my all time faves] or slayer[fave too] or godsmack or whatever. The bands that play stuff like metallica are either imitators, followers, big metallica fans[dream theater] or simply a joke band. Have some respect for a band which initiated one of the most amazing movements in the history of music: underground metal which later catapulted zillions of bands. Metallica, though old, still kicks many, and I say many, bands out there. So I suggest you pick a good metal music history book and learn a little instead of naming bands randomly to impress everyone and pretend you are an expert just because u have a cd collection. Enough said. Byeeeeee. By the way, I am mexican and live in mexico city. Next time you wanna talk to someone who honestly loves music and talks no bullshit about bands, contact me. Bye.... antienne@hotmail.com

Metallica decided to become exactly what they despised in the music industry when they first hit the scene. The day that Bob Rock became Metallicas producer was the end of anything they had going. As for guitar players, I will have to say nothing profound or innovative has ever come from Hetfield or Hammet. Burton was the backbone for the band and he was also responsible for writing most of their earlier hooks. They totally suck now. IMO LOL

I don't see why people have to rant so much about why they hate Metallica...you all are entitled to your opinion. Music is subjective, everyone's different. Like someone said here earlier. "Real" musicians don't really hate any music. To amend that I also think that REAL musicians can appreciate REAL music weather they like it or not. To the people that criticize Metallica's alleged "selling out." As a musician myself, who do you think you are to gauge what selling out is?! Maybe that's music they wanted to make and never got the chance to do...maybe they wanted to take a bit of a departure from what they'd spent roughly a decade establishing. Personally I am more of an old school metal fan...
I like Metallica, Megadeth (I'm almost 22, which isn't old enough to really have reason to take a position in that fan-based feud), Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. I like what I've heard of Anthrax, not really crazy about Slayer though...they're a really tight thrash band, they're not that diverse (I've heard most of their stuff, don't try and convince me otherwise), however no-one can minimize how they took their place in setting the bar as to how tight a thrash metal band is supposed to be...all of their music sounds the same to me.
Frankly I don't give a damn what anyone says or thinks, but all of Metallica's metal contemporaries and the bands that followed (reguardless if they were around before Metallica or not); all of those bands should line up and kiss their ass; its because of Metallica that Metal really came into the mainstream and that bands like Slayer, Pantera, Sepultura, Children of Bodom, etc. and so on have made any fucking money at all. Like it or not...Metallica opened that door for everybody.
Musically I think they compensated for one another's individual weaknesses...simply stated; The sum is far greater than its parts. I can listen to and appreciate any "real" music. I don't find anything about Metallica's catologue that would qualify as "deplorable." As far as they are like individually...from a musician's standpoint I can see why they went after Napster and stuff. But, do you really think Lars gives a damn weather you think he's an asshole for doing it or not?! I think he does care about the fans; but you have to believe that his main priority is Metallica's music (recording, touring, promoting)...It's his livelihood for God's sake!! It's been his livelihood for 20+ years...leave him alone! Leave Kirk alone too...I don't see any good reason for people to rag on him. I don't think he's a mind-blowing original player...but he's got to be doing something right if he's lasted this long with Metallica, and has endorsements with all these companies for his gear. I personally like his style...

Well if Metallica kept making good albums people would still listen.

Its not so much they "sold out" its the fact that they stopped being metallica. They should have got a name change or something. I wanted to here heavy music, not pop rock.

For what it is worth, here is my opinion and everyone has one, you know. I've always thought Kirk Hammett's playing was very choppy. His most fluid sound, for me, was on Ride The Lightning. I'm one of those guys that got to see the early version of Metallica in smaller clubs. Cliff Burton's death changed their whole sound, if you ask me.

Besides the playing, I don't think James Hetfield can sing. He's closer to talking that he is to singing. He throws those "after" syllables that drive me nuts.

For whom the bell tolls-ah
Time marches on-ah
For whom the bell tolls-ah

However, I think Lars Ulrich is a really great drummer and he has his double bass drum routine down. If he would only keep his mouth shut and his opinions to himself and stick to playing drums, then he would be perfect.

I think Metallica are respectable for what they've done in the music world, and they do have some classic songs like Master of Puppets, Welcome Home, Nothing Else Matters, and so on. I'm not a great fan of them, and I don't like most of their music, but I think that they deserve some respect.

I think a lot of people despised Metallica due to the Black album... it's not totally the Napster issue but more on the direction that they were heading...
Black to me was still okay with the exception of the ballads ..... After that it really was unlistenable to me.....
Just like Metallica, Megadeth also faced it's ups and downs but Megadeth woke up and started to play real music again..... Metallica need to be like Megadeth. Look at the latest Megadeth album United Abominations, it's a really great album... I remember somebody quoting that Mustaine needs to be angry again in order to regain his status and he comes up with United Abominations...
I guess Metallica really need to go in the steps of Mustaine and vent their anger and frustration in their music and play some really kickass music just like they used to..... St. Anger does not sound that angry enough...
Even the new metalcore bands play much heavier music than Metallica, look at Lamb Of God, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains (great soloists) and lot of other bands ..... Metallica should come up with an album thats so goddamned heavy that it kicks the hell out of these new bands, I mean since they are the pioneers of heavy riffing .......
BTW, Metallica would survive without Hammett but not Hetfield, he doesn't play solos but his rythm guitar playing has influenced millions of guitar players, ya gotta admit that...

So let's hope that Metallica's next album will be the one that we're all been waiting for .......
