Buckethead: though he was a part of one of the most famous hairmetal bands, Guns N Roses, yet he never got any publicity. for those who do know him, they believe slash is better. sure slash is good, but slash cant really shred and sweep(not to my knowledge atleast) where as buckethead is WAY more versatile and flexible
Cris Oliva: a band such as savatage should have been up there with Iced Earth, Dio, BLS and a few others. too bad he died
zakk wylde:he may not be the most technical, but he is clearly better than tons of guitarists that screw around in mainstream stuff.

John Miles
I would implore anybody to check out Zaragon or upront and deny it Hecan go from Heavy rock (nice man Jack) to Marvin esque to SRV in the flick of a wrist. No wonder after the solo career faltered he became Tina Turners MD and sideman to Joe ****er Listen to his technique on "Now that the magic has gone" from night moves
Alan Muphy So sad this guy died from Aids before he was recognised as being the best trem technician ever and fire breathing lick wizard.
Hank B Marvin Ok no laughing im not a huge fan or anything but he has been responsible in the uk at least for more people picking up a guitar than anyone else.
Terry Kath is my vote. I agree with John Mayer as well. He can really play in a live setting. Check out John Mayer Trio live CD "Try!". Impressive indeed.
Adrian is so melodic and has a unique style. I think his work with Roy Z helped him a bit, cause his new maiden solos ROCKS!!!!
And paschendale is a masterpiece
I think he was already rather melodic before he met Roy - his work on Somewhere in Time, if anything, proved that.
But his time out of Maiden, with his Psycho Motel material and with Bruce and Roy Z, I think definitely let him explore different aspects of his playing/soloing. I remember it said somewhere that he was the "melodic" one in Bruce's band, and Roy Z was the "flashy technical" one. In Psycho Motel he just had free reign to play what he damn well wanted,. and it were great
Since he rejoined Maiden he's become something of the technical one (though arguably he already was opposite dave when they were a pair, since he rejoined I don't think it can even be argued now), embracing arpeggios and re-embracing tapping, but while still keeping that melodic aspect.
And he "learned" the drop-D tuning from Roy
Sorry, could guff on about H all day, he's my number 1 guitarist
I hear you on Paschendale!

Yeah he was very melodic before he left maiden, but as you say, the work with roy made him explore himself and his styles a bit more.
