Neal Schon isn't underrated at all. I think he gets the recognition he deserves, and thankfully for more early Journey.
Rick Nielson is popular, but not as well known. He's not outstanding, but a great player.
Steve Stevens gets a lot of attention... I mean, didn't he win a grammy for the Top Gun theme?
I still feel these players are WAY underrated. Neal Schon is a way better musician than say Vai or any of those guys. Vai couldn't write a hit song or melody to save his life, but has a lot of technique.
Rick plays great for that type of music. Again, he's a way more rounded player/songwriter than most shredders.
Steve Stevens is way more versitale than most of the shredders as well. IMO he should be as popular as Vai etc.. He has an ear for tone which a lot of those guys lack. For me a player is more about the whole package than just technique. I wanna hear a melody, a song.. Anybody can play technical/fast licks.

I don't care for Vai very much. Most of his shredding is tapping. Neal can actually shred.
Steve never struck me as someone underrated, because I read him mentioned in magazines fairly often.
Doug Aldrich
Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush
Jake E. Lee
Jake E. Lee is very underrated, but everyone talks about him being underrated, so is he really?
It's like John Paul Jones. Most Zeppelin fans say he's underrated, and many bassists point to him as influencing them, so is he really all that underrated?
