Carlos Montoya - Everyone rants and raves about Esteban, but Esteban can't lick Carlos Montoya's feet. Carlos Montoya was one of the only Spanish Guitar players to ever fill Madison Square Garden. His playing is some of the best guitar playing that you'll ever hear. Be he goes generally unknow and unmentioned which is a CRIME to all guitarists.
Leo Kottke is another. He is a fellow Minnesotan like me. Very under rated and mostly not talked about. The man can play a 12 string like theres no tomorrow - even with a slide. He's a Slide Guitar MASTER. Your missing out by not listening to his guitar music.

Most of my influences were under-rated rarely heard of players......
First one I could name was Steve Farris from Mr. Mister, that guy can shred, though he holds back a ton on it. On Welcome To The Real World (the Album "Take These Broken Wings") They had some much harder rockin' tracks on it that nobody knows. Steve goes practically haywire on the end of "Into My Own Hands" off that album.
Elliot Easton from The Cars, now there's a man of a million styles. He's like the Robin Zander of guitar, no 2 songs with Easton sound the same or have the same tone. Just throughout The Cars, he's done everything from rockabilly, to surf, to blues, to jazz, to even some mild metal-like stuff (arena rock?). The last I heard he was working with Creedence, and has his own think sorta like my thing with home recordings called the Tiki Gods, which I'm assuming has some Surf element to it.
I'll think of more later, I know I got quite a few I have heard of that few think/or know are that good....I got pizza waiting on me.

Sweet... you mentioned Kim Mitchell! He is such a brilliant musician. Everyone who's into anything remotely like rock music needs to hear his 70s band Max Webster.

underated guitarists
I have to agree with you on Neal Schon's inclusion on this list.
I am sitting here listening to Journey's first album ( 1975); self-titled.
"Of a Lifetime" is a masterpiece..just awesome guitar work. The next two ( pre-Perry) J- albums; ' Look into the Future'. and " Next" are also awesome.
UNfortunely, after Perry came in, it sort of became: Steve Perry and his back-up band'..not too many newer fans even knew Neal's name, but I think he is definitely up there in the top ten guitarists.

I dont know if anyones mentioned this yet on this thread, but it seems like no one around here has listed any of the Allman Bros. on their favorite guitarists lists... so Dicky Betts, Derek Trucks, Dan Toler, Warren Haynes and Duane Allman all appear quite underated..

Not so sure of the Allmans but love Govt. Mule...so many guitarists and so little hero-worship for all but the most well-known. Sports fans seem to make it easier to idolise their people...and would seem to be more of them recieving HUGE sums for their work.

some more definitely underrated guitarists are:
jorma kaukonen
harvey mandel
stephen stills
phil keaggy
robert fripp
t-bone walker
joe walsh-just listen to the james gang and youll know what i mean
and for that matter ill second tommy bolin too
leo kottke for sure, hes brilliant
uli jon roth-yngwie may be faster, but thats all hes got
ill second mathias jabs too, whenever someone does one of his solos they just some to blow it just a little bit. maybe he used blow it himself but still make it work, or something, which would just make it harder to copy for somebody else
and finally allan holdsworth, he deserves all the recogintion he can get
